- m0laria, on 02/10/2009, -0/+34I definitely support this type of gel, and research into this type of microbicide, but I have to say; this is not a cure as the title claims. Preventing infection is not a cure.
- gemlarin, on 02/09/2009, -1/+30AIDS is rampant in Africa because, even though millions have been spent in public awareness and free protection, you can't get the average African male to wear a condom (and the leaders of African nations compound the problem by telling the citizens they can cure AIDS with a balm made of crushed leaves, http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17244005/). Yet, your going to convince the average African woman to insert a gel into her vagina before having sex?
Look, the nations that are blighted with AIDS are typically the nations least likely to use a product like this. It is great news for first world nations that have a better understanding of the disease, but it is pretty useless in nations where it will actually matter.
Plus, from my understanding of the study, they suspect that it was successful in preventing HIV infections in 30% of the women that used the gel. 30% is a good start, but it is hardly a cure. - USER1236, on 02/10/2009, -0/+28Digg... curing AIDS since 2004
- MeatyMcBeef, on 02/10/2009, -0/+22Are you gellin?
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -0/+15What? Did they dissolve $180,000 into gel?
- manbeef, on 02/10/2009, -0/+10Buried as inaccurate.
The gel does not 'cure' AIDS, it's a vaginal gel that prevents infection with HIV. Even still, the results of the only clinical trial done were statistically insignificant, so this article really tells us nothing. - barathron, on 02/10/2009, -0/+9The poster wrote "Early studies say the gel looks promising as a cure."
The word "cure" is not mentioned once in the article nor is it a cure in any way. It is a preventative gel that may not even work according to the article. One has to wonder did the person posting even read the article? It is irresponsible to use the word cure at all in the summary. - silentdud, on 02/10/2009, -2/+9this is the most horrible study... they gave people gel to use to have sex wtih and had them have sex with aids infection people and counted how many were infected.

- ikeeel4money, on 02/10/2009, -0/+7Buried as another "we think we found an AIDS cure" article.
- dpalmer, on 02/10/2009, -0/+7It's not...
First, this wouldn't be a cure... it would just prevent someone from being infected in the first place (assuming women who aren't using condoms are going take the time to smear this gel over their vag).
Second, the difference between the HIV infection in patients using the gel versus patients using the other stuff (or nothing) was not statistically significant. So that 30% lower rate of HIV infection could be nothing. - inactive, on 02/10/2009, -0/+6Aye. While waiting for the results (of my now negative) HIV test - my doctor said the following:
'With current medications you'd be surprised at how long we can keep you healthy and alive' - robtheghost, on 02/10/2009, -0/+5It's happened twice just today

- mikebeezey, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2Statistical significance depends on sample size. If you flip a coin four times and it lands on heads all four times that does not mean it will land on heads every time, It means you need to flip the coin a whole lot more to see that it will land on heads 50% of the time. As the article stated they need to have a larger sample size to draw any legitimate conclusions.
- stormgren, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2Sample size.
- freakstyle571, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2probably more...
- pintocat, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2It's that attitude that keeps this disease spreading.
- fackjoley, on 02/09/2009, -3/+5I hope this is as good as it sounds.
- Edge00, on 02/10/2009, -0/+21. not a cure
2. no such thing as an "AIDS" virus, its called HIV and it can lead to AIDS
3. buried as inaccurate - freakstyle571, on 02/10/2009, -1/+3that was my first thought!
Why are these women even getting involved in this program. Sure its a potential "cure". But for the women who got Placebos? The instructors knew they were encouraging women to go have sex with people with AIDS. What is ethical about that?! - JamesBond, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2Sweet Helen.
- Konrad9, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2*Adds a notch to the AIDS cure list*
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2I swear to god this was going to be an onion article of some sort....
....Wow. - Recoil, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2Shouldn't it be "Gel Fighting AIDS", not "AIDS Fighting Gel"? From the title, one could make the assumption that the AIDS virus is attempting to defeat the gel instead of the other way around.
- LongShlong, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2Like anything, medicine is also a business, unfortunately.
It would be cool to see everything restructured somehow (so it works out), where doctors get paid during the times we're healthy. This way they'd be more interested in keeping us healthy, which is what medicine is all really about. - pintocat, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2Zimbabwe? I can't imagine how much they would have to pay the volunteers there...
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1I agree not a cure at all, just a possible preventative measure. I do wish they had something like this for men though.
- blax1, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1Just use a condom.
- evanman69, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1new AIDS gel is a floor polish.
Noooooooooo...new AIDS gel is a dessert topping. - cowboy86, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1Wow, Digg cures AIDS yet again.
Also, why does it sound like they sent a bunch of infected women out to see if they could infect others or get infected? - dpalmer, on 02/10/2009, -2/+3How convenient... I'm actually studying for my Evidence Based Medicine exam in a few days. It's a class that helps you determine what studies are ***** (like this one) and what studies are less likely to be ***** (but still probably are in the long run at least).
In regards to the article, that 30% is not statistically significant... so it likely could be due to chance. Not sure what p value they were evaluating this data at but probably 0.05. So there is greater than a 1/20 chance that this data is *****. - Amadeus2490, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1AIDS medications are very expensive and very toxic.
