- vuthy, on 01/13/2009, -1/+32What sucks is that if you really want to get fit, a lot of it has to do with what you eat. It's a lot cheaper to eat off the dollar menu than to buy fresh produce, juices, lean meats, fish, and whole grains.
Joining a gym or creating a home gym is a start, but if you're eating junk, you still have a long road ahead of you. I'm starting to buy in bulk now, read the grocery flyers that I usually throw away for deals, and I just got a slow cooker to make sure a healthy dinner is ready for me when I come home instead of going out for food. It's really hard at first, especially cuz I'm lazy, but the more I do it, the more it becomes a routine and it is getting easier. I'm surprised how quickly my palate is changing and I'm beginning to actually enjoy things that aren't just salty, fried, crunchy or bacon-y. - Trekhawk, on 01/14/2009, -1/+22EATING:
-Grow your own veggies
-Don't eat as much
EXERCISE:
-Do push-ups and sit-ups using your own body weight as resistance, no need for a gym
-Invest $30 in a pair of sneakers and run your fat ass skinny
It's not hard people. More calories going out than coming in = weight loss - inactive, on 01/14/2009, -0/+20EXERCISE:

EATING:
DO IT LESS - KDyneria, on 01/13/2009, -0/+17Don't eat.
- presidentraygun, on 01/14/2009, -0/+14I eat stuff I find lying on the road. It's free and the following intense bouts of dysentry keep me trim. Win w....OH GOD it's starting again!
- Griminald, on 01/14/2009, -1/+10The points in a nutshell:
1) Join a gym using their January membership specials
2) Renegotiate your rate of payment at a gym you're at now
3) Ride a bike to work
4) Create your own home gym
5) Fire the personal trainer
6) Have people sponsor you for cancer walks or something to give you incentive
7) Shop online
8) Use the site 5K5K.org
9) Don't buy fitness ***** you're not going to use
Meh. Nothing useful in this article whatsoever. - DillingerSmooth, on 01/13/2009, -2/+10I say eat right and jog everyday
- ericdano, on 01/14/2009, -0/+8Biking to work is the best one. This last summer, when gas was well over $4 a gallon, I think I only needed to fill my car 3 times between June and the end of August.....
- TheUngod, on 01/14/2009, -0/+6"Eating right" does not save money. In fact it tends to cost far more than eating crappy.
- CoD4, on 01/14/2009, -1/+6lol wut
- captainbethany, on 01/14/2009, -0/+5I also realized about a month ago that there are a TON of fitness videos on Netflix watch instantly. I know she's kind of over the top, but I've lost about 7-8 pounds in the last few weeks doing Jillian Michaels' kickboxing. It's also really satisfying after a stressful day.
- rushiku, on 01/14/2009, -0/+510) Wherever you live, it came with a free floor, however, that floor is not nearly low enough.
You can lower the floor, yourself:
- Lay on it: face down, now, use your arms to push that sucker down.
- Jump on it: alternating between a narrow stance and a wide stance between jumps is more effective, coordinating flapping your arms with the stance changes, even more so.
- Squat on it: Now, kick your legs out behind you and kick the floor with your toes, then lay on the floor and push it down with your arms, bring your legs back in and stand abruptly, pushing it down even more.
In no time whatsoever, you'll have a nicely lowered floor, and you'll have the satisfaction of having done it yourself. - Jektal, on 01/14/2009, -0/+5There's arguably an invisible elephant underneath my desk right now servicing me.
- naner, on 01/14/2009, -0/+4"...I''m beginning to actually enjoy things that aren't just salty, fried, crunchy or bacon-y."
Blasphemer! - emalen, on 01/14/2009, -1/+4Not everyone can run/walk/workout outside. Some places with extreme temperatures make outside activities impossible for 4-6 months of the year.
- Kayakityak, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3That's funny; especially since I just read an article today about people eating raccoons.
- starslinger72, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3dugg for bacon-y
- sc0ttius, on 01/14/2009, -1/+4I hate 'self-improvement' articles like this... they can be summed up in 4 words - "use your common sense".
Should I eat this big mac or this turkey sandwich on multigrain bread? Uh oh.. I better go consult my "eat this not that" book because I'm too dumb to think on my own.
#1 money saver that will help you get fit - STOP EATING OUT. - Jektal, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3That's definitely -not- what she said.
- inactive, on 01/14/2009, -2/+5So driving ( gas = money) , time ( time = money) , Drive thru ( McDonalds = money ) everyday is cheaper than shopping once a week at walmart , costco, or sams club ( maybe once a month or twice a month)...
You can buy pre made salmon fillets for like 8-10 bucks like 6 or 8 in a package.
Fast Food Cheaper or are you just a Lazy Fat Ass addicted to trans fat , sugar, and insulin shots? - sgmeyer, on 01/14/2009, -1/+4Losing weight and saving money are very hard things for people. The idea of losing weight and saving money isn't difficult it is self control. Most people don't succeed, because they want to find the quick solution. Everyone expects quick results now. Most people, including myself hate waiting. I get mad when I have to wait a few extra seconds for a single web page to load. People hate waiting in lines, they don't like to wait for their meals.
Not to mention a lot of people aren't educated about what is good and what isn't. They see low fat or fat free, but it has a ton of sugar. They see Healthy Choice or Smart Choice frozen dinners that pack 600 mg of sodium per serving. The food industry is a dirty industry. I hear it all the time. I have tried this diet and that diet. I am doing everything right... Its my genetics... Most of the time this is not true. They just need to excersize, eat properly (decent food choice and appropriate portion sizes). Some people think not eating works, but that just sends you body into starvation mode and it shuts down the metabolism. You have to eat to lose weight. If people spent as much time being active and eating properly as they did watching tv and eating slice after slice they will be ok.
They only true way to lose weight is to make positive changes for a life time. Not just 6 weeks to cut those lbs. - solid12345, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3I don't understand, elaborate please
- ybotoby, on 01/14/2009, -1/+3You don't need a treadmill or a gym membership. Run outside and do exercises that use your body weight as resistance. Members of the military nearly never use free weights or even go to a gym.
- forcedfx, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2How about just raising the roof instead?
- newtondave, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2My experience says otherwise; gym use seems to be pretty high in the military.
That doesn't negate the rest of what you say, and they're certainly fond of their calisthenics. - joketter, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2I've managed a couple of gyms for a few years, I think there are some good points here.
If your looking to join a gym, first shop around, if you find a gym with a better deal, present the better deal to the gym you want to join, they will more then likely match the offer.
But watch out for long-term contracts... $20/month sounds like a good deal but when your locked in for two years, it might not sound so good.
If you're currently a member at a gym and the pocketbook is getting tight(even if it isn't), talk to the sales staff, tell them you want to stay a member but it just isn't fitting your budget, a good gym will negotiate the price with you. I can't tell you how many times we've dropped monthly rates by a few bucks.
Buying home equipment drives me nuts. Consider buying a $2000 treadmill compared to a gym membership. If you were paying $50/month on a gym membership or $600/year (plus the cost of driving). IF, and i mean if, you were to use that treadmill for maybe one year, that's $166.67/month!! So save the space in your garage or basement and get your lazy butt outside for a jog or go join a gym. - newtondave, on 01/14/2009, -1/+3Because there's more to "staying fit" than "eating less"?
- inactive, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2What the ***** is a "burpie"?
- Spirckle, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2This is obviously a marketing push by gym and fitness centers to drive up membership when people are starting to re-consider them a luxury. The number one way of staying fit is to join a gym? Give me a break. I was expecting to see advice such as; 1. Do NOT join a gym there are so many other ways to keep fit. 2. Look for barely used home gym equipment... People practically give that stuff away. 3. Lay off the starches, fatso. 4. Take the stairs. 5. etc.. etc... etc...
None of which costs much at all. - mtxrawkus, on 01/14/2009, -0/+11. www.crossfit.com
2. Eat less you fat ass! - inactive, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1I don't use a trainer, but I think it does wonders as motivation. I see these people in the gym with trainers daily and it adds direction to their workout. There are other ways of course, like having a workout partner and/or keeping a notebook of activities.
- inactive, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1@morningmatters
I think the point is thin != fit. - inactive, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1if by break you mean the science, then I just did.

Watch Poorboys episodes >> http://poorboys.tv - zantos420, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1that's why i buried this article as lame
- BDutton, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1...via the stairs. :)
- Kayakityak, on 01/14/2009, -1/+2Grow your own sprouts. They are easy and fun to grow. They cost just pennies per pint. Plus, they are incredibly healthy.
- Trekhawk, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1Buy a bike then assumed fatty. Cheaper than an elliptical machine (this article is about saving money too) and less impact on the joints. Problem solved.
- Jektal, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1Skinny, weak, and hungry is no way to go through life.
- solid12345, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1Well when I mean't bucket I mean't literally, like people who think they have to gourge on a huge salad, a dozen variety of vegetables everyday, etc., you don't need to spend 20 dollars a day on veggies to stay healthy, people overdo it.
- SirChasm, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1They seem to be aware that right now is January because of "act now to take advantage of New Year’s savings" yet, "3) Ride a bike to work" seems to completely disregard the fact that it's January.
- NapalmJedd, on 01/20/2009, -0/+1Check out DieselCrew.com for more strength and fitness ideas.
- ybotoby, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1In colder climates that is probably true. In Korea I spent colder days in the gym, which lasted a month or two. Still this usually involved normal exercises on the gym floor with mats.
In Oklahoma I spent maybe 4 weeks out of a year in a gym.
army btw. Sure it varies depending on location, branch, and unit. - tack65, on 08/27/2009, -0/+1Yes, getting fit doesn't have to cost you an arm, and a leg. Lace up your shoes, and go do a power walk. How about a set or two of pushups? How about some squats? These are all free things to do. Oh, crunches too!
- skinnydude109, on 09/26/2009, -0/+1I need this. Especially since we are approaching the end of the year
- morningmatters, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1Why do some people insist on complicated answers?
Think about people from countries in Europe. Their foods are just as fatty and they don't exercise like the Americans. Yet most of them are thinner and live just as long if not longer. Eating less and taking more public transportation are the two most obvious reasons for this. - ggolson, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1I can't wait until February so all the New Years resolution posers will stop crowding my gym.
- Jektal, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1Sounds like somebody worked at a camp or something similar...
- foomojive, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1treadmills make zero sense to me unless you live in the frozen tundra or a rainforest. what if they invented a continuous treadmill track that doesn't rotate and has great features like variable scenery and natural sunlight? it already exists for free, it's called a sidewalk!
