- DigSomeMore, on 09/20/2008, -0/+6There are so many reasons, yet not always so easy ;-)
- ScottMcIntyre, on 09/20/2008, -0/+6I guess the first reason is probably a major factor for most smokers and provides both a money and health cost-related motivation for giving up:
QFA: "You won't have to pay more and more and more and more each year.
Yup, taxes will almost certainly continue to go up. New Jersey, Vermont, and Connecticut are among the states leaning harder on smokers for revenue, but even some tobacco-growing states are beginning to milk the coffin-nail cash cow. Lawmakers' reasoning: There is evidence that price increases cause smokers to reduce consumption. And the medical costs of smoking are astronomical—a huge burden to the states." - Mobscene, on 09/20/2008, -0/+5Being a smoker for many years (and no, I am not proud of it), I always blamed a failure to give up smoking on being idle, or when out drinking.
All the warning labels, studies, research, hypnosis, graphic images ... trust me, will not even stop a smoker from lighting up while reading on said subject.
Giving up smoking is simple ... Wanting to give up, is a whole separate situation. I am currently taking strength from friends who I grew up with that have simply given up smoking completely, as they decided they were ready at that point in their life. - vcn3wb05, on 09/20/2008, -0/+3There are so many medical reasons to stop smoking that if bluntly and frankly presented to them daily, I can't see how or why any smoker would continue to smoke.
- optionshiftk, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2I think everyone should share this article with someone who addicted to smoking, you will save their life.
- psud0, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2I quit 5 years ago, but still there are some situations where I really miss them :|
- cynicalbrit94, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2The one use of the patriot act (well not, but the sort of thing it does) I would agree with. Taking away your right to smoke, and Putting smokers in a mandatory little community for about a year. When they no longer need nicotine, they can go where they want. Of course this community would be designed for upper middle class living, and anyone can come in to it (subjected to security check) and visit friends. Families can live together, but the problem would be solved. Addicts would be scheduled time in which they could leave the community under supervision. It would work perfectly.
- Rykielz, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2While I appreciate you taking such an interest in my well being, it gets annoying after the first 10 times. Contrary to popular belief we know what we are doing, and we know what smoking does to us. I'd rather enjoy myself now during the prime years of my life than to be 99 years old, bed ridden, unable to control my bowel movements and totally dependent on another person (or robot :p ).
- xbxoxy1, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1use a vaporizer instead
- chkdg8, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1Thumbnail alone should be enough to quit.
- 1town, on 09/20/2008, -1/+2I'm trying to quit.
Personal motivations;
1. Money
2. Money
3. Money
4. Health - theokandroid, on 09/21/2008, -1/+1It's as though people give reasons like we don't already know them. We know, I think about it every time I take a drag. Unfortunately I am an addict and don't have the motivation as of right now.
- DearSergio, on 09/20/2008, -1/+1What about us here in MA?! Some of the locally owned stores in small towns have Marlboro's up to nearly 7$/pack. That's crazy.
- keyme, on 09/21/2008, -1/+1I don't know about this. I like my occasional cigarette. One smoke per day if I have them handy, or none at all if I don't. I can go without them for days. I reserve my habit for certain situations where smoking "won't hurt". I don't think this "damages me" much at this rate.
I suppose all those smoking warnings are aimed at people who smoke 2 packs per day. If you can hold your habit under control, I guess you should be fine.
