- YogiWanKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+139If you're going to drink soda, drink it in moderation. For example, I only consume soda when mixed with liquor.
- mattc908, on 10/10/2007, -10/+124Lets get one thing straight, a soda can every once and a a while doesn't do anything bad.
- Ishiguro, on 10/10/2007, -4/+107This is another attack on delicious soft drinks coming from BIG WATER. Big Water is using monopoly like powers to intimidate freedom loving soda drinkers. You'll notice at the top that "The exclusive US distributor for KYK Water Ionizers" sponsors this website. This company is a well known front group and money launderer for Big Water and its goose stepping goons.
- GirthAgain, on 10/10/2007, -2/+103At least they didn't get your lucky charms.
kidding! :) - JonAce, on 10/10/2007, -14/+103I love the smell of bias in the morning.
- junkie1, on 10/10/2007, -15/+98Take it from a short, fat, little Irishman, that has spent 42 years ingesting substances (that were not always legal. Years ago...years ago..) that is paying the price right now. I could be buying a new truck, or Festool Saws and Routers; like to Festool Domino DF 500 Q Set, but instead, I am putting a 4 tooth bridge in my head!
Just say no to soda! - ostawookiee, on 10/10/2007, -4/+86This is baloney, every time I drink a coke, people break into song and polar bears become friendly and tame.
- mattfugitive, on 10/10/2007, -8/+88Up next... how coffee will shrink your penis.
- tylerjames, on 10/10/2007, -8/+75soda pop killed my father!
and raped my mother! - sfiling, on 10/10/2007, -2/+69Wow! Now I will have guilt every time I drink my favorite Diet Pepsi. I guess I will turn to adult beverages!
- DiggsOnlyNeoCon, on 10/10/2007, -13/+79So someone read a couple of food books and pulled out some quotes. Big whoop. Everything in moderation.
- gregdogum, on 10/10/2007, -9/+72Exercise and don't eat junk food and you'll be in better shape than stopping the soda consumption.
They make it seem like the alternative is to stop drinking soda then you'll be magically healthier and skinnier. Not...
Eat healthy, exercise, sleep well, and you'll be good. - unjustend, on 10/10/2007, -3/+58I quit drinking pop by starting smoking, you can do it too!
- timusca, on 10/10/2007, -2/+46"pH of Soda = pH of Vinegar
For one, soda, no matter who makes it, is the most acidic beverage you can buy, with a pH of about 2.5, about the same as vinegar. Why does that matter? Acid oxidizes whatever it comes in contact with. If you put soda or vinegar on metal, it will rust it quickly. Check out this table of acid levels of your favorite sodas."
Well, its a damn good thing I'm not made of metal. - noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -2/+40"Water for Life USA is the exclusive US distributor of the KYK Water Ionizer "
Take it with a grain of salt, people. Many of these things are true, but some is bound to be stretched in one way or another. The one I don't get is the whole "every soda increases your diabetes risk by 1.6%", I've been drinking soda almost every day for more than a decade.... why don't I have diabetes? My risk is over 4000%
Not a bad idea to quit, but nothing to be highly alarmed over. - mpn401, on 10/10/2007, -2/+38"Our children aren’t safe, either. Dr. Nestle states, “Adolescents who consume soft drinks display a risk of bone fractures three to four-fold higher than those who do not.” Dr. William Duffy from the Naval Research Institute states, “The high sugar hides the acid. Children little realize they are drinking this strange mixture of phosphoric acid, sugar, caffeine, coloring, and flavoring matter.”"
O ***** NOW WE NEED A SODA DRINKING AGE!!!!!!!1111 - winmywii, on 10/10/2007, -8/+44
Eat healthy includes not drinking soda. - Bizdorph, on 10/10/2007, -9/+441. Aspartame is not bad for you. It's just a polypeptide. Out of the hundreds of studies done on it, maybe a couple have found negative effects. Your body has ways to cope with methanol, specifically methanol dehydrogenase. Yes, consuming a lot will overload these systems, but this argument is like saying that the products of alcohol breakdown result in a hangover; they don't, because they exist for fractions of a second before the appropriate enzyme breaks them down, so long as you haven't consumed in excess.
2. Caffeine is not bad for you either. Yes, it is mildly addictive, but when used in moderation there no no negative effects, and actually a few positive ones. In fact, regular, low doses of caffeine can be almost good for you. - kwelling12, on 10/10/2007, -2/+34"Water for Life USA is the exclusive US distributor of the KYK Water Ionizer " -nuff said
- MEGAMERICAN, on 10/10/2007, -4/+35Eating a soda can doesn't sound very healthy to me.
- saintpath, on 10/10/2007, -2/+32This is nothing. Back in high school I used to drink a hundred cans of cola a week. Yep, right up until my third heart attack. - Fry
- athorstad, on 10/10/2007, -5/+33Look who sponsored the study...thats your number 1 clue as to the validity of the script.
Water for life USA= No good news for Soda - Fragged58, on 10/10/2007, -2/+29It doesn't matter. To much of anything is bad for you.
- BTrey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+25Yeah, because that soda goes right to your stomach, which is notoriously unable to handle even the mildest acid. Uh, oh wait... Your stomach is filled with hydrochloric acid, which has a PH of about 1.
Soda is far from a health drink. It isn't good for your teeth (sugared sodas are really bad but even diet soda causes problems.) If you don't eat a healthy diet, including not getting enough calcium, soda can make things worse. But it isn't nearly as bad as this article makes it sound. The books quoted are largely crank books with no real scientific evidence to back up their claims. There's no evidence that aspartame is carcinogenic in the amounts contained in soda. The link between obesity and soda is not believed to be causal. People who drink lots of soda tend to have bad diets, get little exercise and generally not take care of their health. Heavy soda drinking is a marker of poor health habits; it isn't necessarily a cause of obesity. The claim that drinking a soda causes you to be 1.6 times more likely to be obese is bunk. Of course, soda has lots of calories and consuming excess calories, particularly sugar calories, WILL make you fat. But soda is no worse than any other source of sweet calories. - grinding, on 10/10/2007, -4/+27Blog maintained by "The exclusive US distributor for KYK Water Ionizers." Not sure the studies cited are conclusive or even scientific.
- burnswhenipee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+22Dugg for "Big Water". That just sounds so silly and non-threatening. It's like referring to landscaping/construction companies as "Big Dirt". ooooh noooo!
- Maccc, on 10/10/2007, -3/+25Buried as inaccurate, and spam. While surely some of this stuff is true, it isn't coming from an objective source.
Oh, and by the way, even if it is all true... ***** it anyway.
*drinks a Dr. Pepper* - st0rm, on 10/10/2007, -5/+26"Water for Life USA is the exclusive US distributor of the KYK Water Ionizer "
Clearly an impartial view on the subject.
Buried as spam. - brstilson, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22pH of Soda = pH of Vinegar
Nice try, but it really doesn't matter that much. Your digestive system is coated with something called mucous. This protects the lining of your esophagus, stomach, and intestines from acid. Funny how no one that brings up this fact ever acknowledges that your stomach is full of hydrochloric acid already.
"Dr. Michael Murray from the Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine concluded, “It appears that increased soft drink consumption is a major factor that contributes to osteoporosis.” Furthermore, Dr. Elson Haas, author of The Detox Diet states, “Tooth loss, periodontal disease, and gingivitis can be problems, especially with a high phosphorus intake, particularly from soft drinks.”"
Sorry, but "Natural Medicine" and "Detox Diet" just killed the credibility of both of these "doctors." Quoting from snake-oil salesmen doesn't help one's case. - tizz66, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21Yeah, because water never rusts metal. That's the kind of ***** science that annoys me.
- timusca, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20And that's lower sperm counts... not a smaller penis. God, get your 12-year-old rumors straight!
- timusca, on 10/10/2007, -3/+22From a water company? Noooooo....
- mildgreenfairy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18Freshly squeezed orange juice has a pH of approx 3.5, about the same as Diet Coke, Diet 7-up, and regular Sprite.
- djdole, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18FYI, Orange Juice has a PH of 3.5.
Apple juice has a PH of about 4.
RUN FOR THE HILLS! THEY'RE ACIDS TOO!! - eviltandem, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18The whole "coke eats enamel" argument is an urban legend. It was tested exhaustively and it does not rot your teeth. That story about putting teeth in coke and it dissolves overnight was a myth too. Everyone "knows" this, but it's always a friend, teacher, or someone else who actually did it.
http://www.snopes.com/cokelore/acid.asp - skankyBacon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16You should probably stop doing that.
- habbofresh, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19Chewlies gum?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15That's not a logical fallacy at all. Who sponsored the study has direct relevance to the potential credibility of the information. It's similar to conflict of interest. In this case, the group who sponsored the study, or who are presenting the information, are promoting the drinking of water. To ignore this fact is the act of a naive person. Now, it doesn't necessarily negate the information presented, but it should cause the reader to become a lot more cautious in accepting it at face value. What you're talking about, the ad hominem fallacy, is a direct insult to the information giver, or an attack on the source's character. That is not what athorstad did, this poster expressed skepticism on the accuracy of the article because it serves the goals of the source. That's not ad hominem. It's cynicism, but it isn't ad hominem.
- Takteek, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16According to this article I died 3 years ago...
- psyjoniz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16diet soda and light cigarettes. brilliant marketing techniques.
- CalmLlama, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Eat meal + Drink soda + brush teeth = teeth don't get messed up.. Drink soda, don't brush teeth for a few days = teeth get messed up
- lbarszap, on 10/10/2007, -8/+22Is that why you don't drink soda? I don't know if you know how biology works, but when you put things in your mouth, they don't end up pouring all over your liver. Funny you still drink alcohol though. I guess your teacher didn't do that demonstration. :)
- SoulDesigner, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16We call soda "pop" in the uk. And we call people like you wankers.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Exactly. The information is sensationalized and inaccurate. Obviously from a company with a special interest. I've been drinking 1-2 sodas a day since forever. I have check-ups every year and am in great health, dental included. I'm exactly in my weight to height range as well. I'm almost 40. Moral of the story - anything in excess is bad for you.
- Technopope, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15You could have brushed your teeth...
- jtb4, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16Lame. The quotes are all from kook doctors. Everyone knows soda isn't good for you but c'mon. I'm pretty sure the hydrocarbon fumes downtown where I ride my bike are worse for me than soda.
- blast_flame, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14And I'd keep drinking coffee...
- DiggsOnlyNeoCon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13I'm not being arrogant. I'm just saying that this article-writer didn't interview a doctor, or isn't a doctor. It's not a new study. Heck, I read Food Politics 5+ years ago. All he did was pull out some quotes.
- clichecow, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13It might not make you healthy, but it will make you healthier
- burnswhenipee, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14Drinking soda in public is still legal.
I'm tired of coming home from the mall/concert/public area smelling like corn syrup. -
