- bone2pick6, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Consider this quote from Supreme Court Justice Brandeis who served on the Supreme Court from 1916 until 1939. He said, “The greatest dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal, well-meaning, but without understanding.”
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8"One less! One less! I wanna be one less!" Is that how the HPV vaccine comercial goes? Unfortunately some users of this vaccination do become "one less" when they die as a result of taking it.
- LifeguardMom, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8The best way to avoid HPV is to stay a virgin until you are married then stay faithful to your spouse. DUH. My daughter's friend married a man who wanted a virgin when he finally married. His wedding gift to her? HPV on their honeymoon. He has been "sowing his wild oats" and now his young wife is getting treated for cervical cancer. Needless to say this marriage is already in trouble and they are in counseling. Self-control is a marvelous virtue that is not taught or extolled in our society anymore. What a shame.
- debran, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Great quote and very true. The greatest danger to our liberty might very well be from those who just 'want the best for us.'
- Taquoshi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5My son's pediatrician was great, except that he kept trying to give our son the HepB inoculation because our son was old enough to be sexually active. I had to repeatedly explain that we had religious objections and also that there were reaction concerns, since I had a 102 temp for four days when I had gotten the HepB vaccination before going to Mexico. He never did have the HepB shot, but it was only because of vigilance on my part.
Many science fiction novels include a scene where someone announces that they can't get pregnant because they got "their shot" which prevents pregnancy and STDs. The idea is that the society has achieved sex without consequences. We are not there yet, no matter how much they want to believe otherwise, which is why they were pushing the HPV vaccine so hard. And there is no such thing as an action without consequence, as LifeGuardMom pointed out in that tragic story. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3CouldaShouldaWoulda...
"Providing the HPV vaccine doesn't promote sexual promiscuity any more than providing the Hepatitis B vaccine promotes drug use." -- Gov(R- TX) Rick Perry (who refused to rescind the exec ord he issued, requiring the vaccine f/girls ages 11 & 12 and entering 6th grade in 2008SEP) was addressing criticism that the vaccine could send a msg that teenage sex is permissible. Parents will be able to opt out their daughters as they can f/other, required vaccines.
{Perry, a Repub & born-again Christian, COULDA said, "I think this vaccine is a great idea f/parents who want to inoculate their daughters."
{He SHOULDA said, "I promise not to circumvent the TX legislature w/another bone-headed idea ever again." But, he didn't.} - tebuddha, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3The Pediatrician tried to talk me into having my 11 yr. old daughter vaccinated at her last appointment, I said no way! who knows what kind of side effects could show up now or ten years from now, people shouldnt jump on every band wagon that rolls by, use common sense! good article! i'll be sharing this!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1what teenager says "ricky, let's have sex; I can't get HPV!"?
- ccy444, on 09/17/2008, -0/+0I am personally glad that my daughter will not be old enough for this vaccine for another 6-7 years. The studies were too short and I want to see a better picture of the possible effects before I okay it.
On person said that a girl got HPV on her honeymoon and now is being treated for cervical cancer: cervical cancer is only caused by a few of the 30-some HPV types that are sexually transmitted. The four kinds covered by the shots (the kinds that are associated with cancer) do not usually show up until you get an abnormal pap test. So, if she has warts rather than an abnormal pap smear, she is probably just being treated for warts. This is not to say she cannot have the types of HPV that causes cancer, but it usually takes a long time for that type to rear its ugly head. - Taquoshi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Stand your ground!!! Our local school district required the HepB, but I happened to be homeschooling, so the pressure wasn't that bad for me. Stay in the examining room with your daughter, or else they may give her the shot while you are filling out paperwork or something. That's what they almost did to my son. The doctors feel that they "know what's best" but that's not always true.
