7 Pains You Shouldn't Ignore
webmd.com — Whoever coined the term "necessary evil" might have been thinking of pain. No one wants it, yet it's the body's way of getting your attention when something is wrong. WebMD consulted doctors in cardiology, internal medicine, geriatrics, and psychiatry so you'll understand which pains you must not ignore -- and why.

- jggube, on 03/29/2008, -2/+43Having constant pain, even if you choose to ignore it, will affect you. It will make you tired, unwilling to do activities you normally do, and can lead to depression, all behind the scenes. It will also affect your demeanor towards others because of the chronic pain you've been experiencing. If you experience constant pains for more than a week, don't wait any longer, go see a doctor (I wouldn't even recommend waiting one whole week, in case it's serious).

- Myztry, on 03/29/2008, -0/+5The catch 22 here is that making an appointment with a doctor often involves waiting for another week... It's hard to get people their treat their symptoms more seriously than the doctors themselves.
- mtwolf, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1Go to promptcare....or a clinic...it is usually cheaper and doesn't require an appointment.
- betterth, on 03/29/2008, -1/+1Whhha?
You live in America? Maybe you need to find a new doctor.
I *always* get in for same day appointments with my 'family doctor'. When I've needed to get checked out (by *my* doctor, not a clinic or hospital mind you), I've never had to wait more than a few hours.
- Jorlwind, on 03/29/2008, -1/+2I have chronic pain in my leg because a bone growth caused by MHE nearly severed a nerve in my leg, which didn't heal properly. It's not always as simple as just going to the doctor and getting pain medication, because I don't want to spend the rest my life doped up on pain meds. If nothing else, I have awesome reason to be an asshole now and then.
- orbitn, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1im less a man than you apparently.. im suffering through cronic back pain caused by a genetic malformality, a geek-gut and who knows what else, that 2 surgeries have failed to fix, now im wearing duragesic and popping vicodin like i was doctor house, and it doesnt always help. I still have an excuse to be grumpy. I can be grumpy and in pain, because of the pain, or grumpy and mostly out of pain, because of the meds.
- mtwolf, on 03/29/2008, -0/+6This article is so true!
I had abdominal pain(regular stomach ache) last week that slowly moved to the lower right portion of my abdomen. I never go to the doctor, but ironically after checking the Internet to see if it could be appendicitis, I decided to go to the doctor.
Turns out I had appendicitis and had my appendix removed that night. Now, a week later, I am sitting on the couch popping meds and surfing the Internet, but not dead. - bliz, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1Have to agree. I have a pain in my left buttocks when trying to do sit and reach with both legs straight out (no pain when a leg is bent). Been years and it made me avoid sit and reach since.
- hotbeefman, on 03/29/2008, -2/+2Everyone here knows I'm never a comment spammer. But there is a guy down there that is claiming he's feeling all of these and he's going to the doctors.
Please everyone share this digg. It will only help. No matter what it is, it's going to be okay. Share this.
Bright Side: I think we have all felt mild symptoms of all these and those of us may have the knowledge to make changes for the good. If you know someone that needs advice, Share this.

- KaiUno, on 03/29/2008, -1/+8Polly wants a cracker?
- robbh66, on 03/29/2008, -5/+1Actually, this article is pretty worthless considering Digg's very young user base. Outside of appendicitis, the chance of people as young as they are here having these conditions is very slim.
- Myztry, on 03/29/2008, -3/+5They can, but in most cases their is no need for concern. The trouble is that in order to get it checked, the medical profession makes it a real expensive inconvenience. First you need to make an appointment, which will occur at some distant time in the future.
Than you need to wait hours in the waiting room during work hours so as not to potentially inconvenience the doctor. The average doctor will waste maybe 24 hours of patients time during a 8 hour shift. Then for diagnosis, the doctor will ask you to describe your bodies self-diagnostics to him, but have no diagnostic tools themselves outside of simple measures like blood pressure/rate.
Actual diagnosis will require another 3rd party which in turn involves a distant appointment, during which hours of patient work hours will be wasted, copious amounts of money for someone to run a repetitive procedure such as lab tests.
The chemicals used to treat a bodily function will in turn unbalance another bodily function, making it more like trading problems then an actual cure. Hopefully some acceptable trade-off is found as life returns to being semi-normal.
Then with your diabetes of your failed pancreas cloaked by pig carcass derived insulin, you can go off and reproduce multiple offspring that will have inherited your genetically faulty DNA, and experience all the pleasures above.
Which in turn may result in several unrelated specialists appointment, for which the doctor needs to be kept in the fiscal loop regardless of not having any specialist knowledge.
In the event of an actual diagnosis, you will be prescribed some brand medicine, for which the Doctor earns 'gravy train' credits for, and gets to experience marketting seminars in Hawaiin resorts.- Myztry, on 03/29/2008, -0/+3LOL. Some of the paragraphs seem to have come out in the wrong order, How strange is that!

- rachelf, on 03/29/2008, -1/+3I don't understand why people are digging you down.
You're absolutely correct about checking it out when you have bad headaches.
I was having headaches for the last two-three years thinking I was getting them just because of (insert reason here)
I finally had -the worst headache of my life- a few weeks ago that lasted for twelve hours. I thought I'd be a tough girl and suck up the pain. But 11 hours of it was a little too alarming.
I also don't have health insurance.
I went to the ER anyway and found out I head a blood pressure of 224/117. Pretty close to having a stroke.
Anyway, between that, seeing my 7,000$ hospital bill and my new monthly subscription to hypertension medication, I almost had a nervous breakdown a few weeks ago.
I'm also only 24 years old.
:(
But what is 7000$ when your life is at stake eh?- WriterSD, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1Thanks Rachelf! One of my friends recently died after ignoring arm pain and it was a heart problem. Other diggers may not realize it (I guess since I was dugg down!), but it truly is important to watch for the warning signs, even when you're young.

- xaogypsie, on 03/29/2008, -0/+2My experience has been that some of the worst things medically weren't ever really felt. A Vague "if you have pain, go to the doctor" doesn't always help...
So yeah, it was pretty worthless. I had very mild symptoms and only went to the doc b/c my wife and mom were pressuring me (and you can't hold out long when that happens). Turns out, I was in the process of entering Blast Crisis - the point at which you basically die from leukemia.
Regular checkups are, imho, the best route in terms of catching things....- Issius, on 03/29/2008, -0/+0Seriously. Our medical system is so understaffed partly because people go to the doctor for vague pains that are nothing. Granted, you want to catch things early, but most things are normal and an aspirin is fine. Hell, whenever I'm sick (the type of sick that just makes you feel *****, but not ***** enough to stay home) I just exercise for 30 minutes to an hour and I feel great.

... - Pigeon, on 03/29/2008, -0/+10I get chest pains at least once or twice a week. Its like a constant pain just above the heart and it forces me to breathe really shallowly. The more I breathe in the more it hurts. If it take a deep or even normal breathe the pain gets several times worst, so I end up sitting there taking quick mini breathes for the ten minutes it takes to go away.
I know Digg isn't the place to get medical advice :p but I'm wondering if anyone has any similar problems and if they actually know what it is? I've had it checked several times but no doctor can tell me what it is or why I get it. My heart stopped for awhile just before I was born (according to parents) so I was cut out and in intensive care for a few weeks after being born, could that have anything to do with it?- Heywoodj, on 03/29/2008, -0/+3Hiatal hernia.
Yup pulled that out of my ass.
Do not take medical advice from the internet. - MetalLizard, on 03/29/2008, -0/+4If you ever start to have palpitations (feeling your heart beat), start to sweat, get trembly, or lightheaded when this happens along with the pain and breathlessness I would get to the emergency room by squad. Just because the pain is in your chest does not mean it is cardio related. If the doctors have done an EKG, an Echocardiogram, etc, then I wouldn't have much to worry about. It sounds like a gastric problem such as acid reflux. It can cause breathlessness in people. Next time you think you are getting this take some calcium carbonate tablets such as Tums, or an off brand, and see if it helps. If it is bothering you that much I would get another evaluation if you can.
- gl77, on 03/31/2008, -1/+2palpitations is not just "feeling your heart beat" its feeling your heart beat irregularly.
- MetalLizard, on 03/29/2008, -1/+2If you want to argue with someone who has knowledge in the medical field, at least look it up on wikipedia first.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palpitation
A palpitation is an abnormal awareness of the beating of the heart, whether it is too slow, too fast, irregular, or at its normal frequency.- gl77, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1yes, yes because wikipedia is soooo accurate. if you seriously have the vast knowlede of the medical field that you claim you do, i would assume you are very intelligent, if you are very intelligent, i would assume that you would have referred me to a more accurate source such as a medical dictionary.

- xenuxenuts, on 03/29/2008, -0/+3Sharp pains are generally not deadly from what I've read. Very often they're something like gas, gerd, pleurisy, etc. Another thing to watch for is hyperventilation. That can cause chest pain and breathlessness. It might be anxiety related or a panic attack. Panic attacks can happen from stress, but they can also happen out of the blue for no reason. I started having hyperventilation issues after I quit smoking, and it can be very distressing. If you've had several tests come back negative and no one can tell you what's going on, I'd strongly suggest looking into hyperventilation and/or panic attacks.

- gl77, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1sad to say most people who have any of these symptoms that go to a doctor about them will just get the old checkup and customary "well, here's some pain medication" and a pat on the back and sent out the door. from experience (not me, mind you, but people i have known) most doctors simply like to treat just the symptoms without finding out what is actually wrong. they look at you, poke and prod and write a pain medication prescription and send you out the door and then send you (or your insurance company) the outrageously high bill for doing 5 minutes worth of work and still not fixing your problem. i have seen it time and time again and sadly i have lost all faith in doctors (at least here in the U.S.)
- jinxplayer, on 03/29/2008, -1/+0Thats why your an idiot to stick with a doctor that would treat you like that. There are hundreds of thousands practicing MDs in the US alone, im sure.

I do suffer from panic attacks, but I don't think this is related. It usually happens when I'm alone doing something non stressful like reading etc. What confuses me is that it doesn't seem to be linked to things like panic or stress, it just happens randomly. I can just be reading or sitting in the garden etc. I do tremble/shake when it happens and sometimes sweat.
Thanks again for the replies!- kneecarrot, on 03/29/2008, -0/+0Do a search on "benign chest wall pain". I get the same thing as you and this is exactly what it is. Aboslutely nothing to worry about.

- Ricky138, on 03/29/2008, -0/+2honestly one of the worst things that you can ignore (if your a male) is testicular pain. my cousin always had pain and thought it was normal but then one day it was so bad he went to the Doctorsand thay found out it was testicular torsion (where you two testicals twist) and they said if he would have waited another day he would have had to take them off.
- tcpip4lyfe, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1I've heard that testicular torsion can be the most painful thing a person can ever experience.
- midriscoll09, on 03/29/2008, -0/+6What pains can I ignore?
- celotil, on 03/29/2008, -4/+0None, but the majority are symptomatic of something you're doing right now, i.e. they're physical fatigue, and you should simply take a break. Pain that comes when you're doing nothing is more worrying though. There is also two types of "pain", one which is pain as everyone calls it, and the other is "fuzziness", a kind of pain that is a strange sensation more than harsh feeling - I frequently suffer from two types of migraine, one which is powerful and painful, the other which is just the weirdest feeling of everything I know being alien and unknown and briefly interrupted by flashes of brief pain which, for whatever reason, I "see" as blue or green.
Pressure on your chest and the sensation of someone grabbing your arm/punching your jaw/grabbing your ankle? Get thee to a doctor! You're likely to be having a heart attack. Lymphatic swelling and heat? You're suffering from poisoning, likely organic. Pain off centre to the right of your belly button, and not shifting left with a gurgling? That's probably your appendix threatening to rupture. Squat and it hurts? Hernia.
Calf muscles ache? Have you been riding a bicycle vigourously? Rest, drink water high in sodium and sugar. Haven't been cycling? Same thing - cramps are caused not by low salt or high salt exclusively but by an imbalance in your salt/sugar levels.
There are many pains, and some we can use as a diagnosis that what we did just recently hurts until we get better at it. Other pains should be seen to by a doctor ASAP. You really should know your own body though.
(And please, no-one use that know your own body thing to denigrate my later comment. I've been having those pains for years, and I still haven't had any bad ailments, I'm just curious about the source.)- celotil, on 03/29/2008, -3/+0(This comment directed at whoever dugg me the ***** down.)
Alright, *****-suckers, what pain do you think someone CAN ignore, huh? There is not a single pain that your body throws at your brain that you can ignore because THEY ALL MEAN SOMETHING. Their meaning may be simple and easily fixable, but that's no reason to ignore them.- nebion, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1I didn't digg you down, but there are some pains that there's not really anything you can do about except try to alleviate them via medication (migraines being among the nastier ones).
- celotil, on 03/29/2008, -1/+0And because you didn't dig me down I won't personally attack you, BUT you did see my bit about, "Their meaning may be simple and easily fixable", didn't you?
This is what I'm getting at. I frequently have migraines, always have since I was ten (and no, nothing was found to discover why), and so I take aspirin - I think that's a clue; Panadol does jack ***** yet Aspirin does alleviate the pain, the problem is that no doctor I've talked to will even hypothesise about it, let alone send me to a medical centre for tests to figure out why.
There is some pain which means little, and there is some pain which means a lot, but whenever you have pain you better pay ***** attention. That was my point, and what I find ridiculous is that there are apparently some people on Digg who don't even understand basic english and comprehension, and that REALLY gives me a ***** a headache...

- forgiste, on 03/29/2008, -0/+3I'm convinced that I have testicular torsion, I've had a lot of symptoms and I don't have health insurance. I went to the ER, they had to call in a specialist who obviously didn't want to be there. They pretty much laughed at me. They said I would have pain, and I told them I've had pain for months and months, and just kept putting it off. Anyway, they did an ultrasound and told me that I had an inguinal hernia, then they said I had a cyst that comes and goes and wasn't anything to worry about. $128 doctor bill later and I still have my symptoms. God Bless the USA!
- bmystry, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1Only $128 dollars?? - MetalLizard, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1Unless you have a congenital defect that could result in an aneursym, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, or recent severe head trauma your chance of getting a cerebral aneurysm is extremely small. In relation to your age you are more likely to die from suicide, homicide, or an accident such as a motor vehicle collision.

- MetalLizard, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1Why is that? - celotil, on 03/29/2008, -0/+0A couple of pains I've always been curious about, but never thought to ask my doctor about on those rare occasions I visit, is a) a severe and sharp pain, like a spike piercing through my body, right up through my tailbone - it's infrequent but it makes me shoot out of my chair when it occurs, usually while sitting down -, and b) the strangest sensation of burning soda pop travelling down my body from my forehead down.
Usually these two pains are followed by brief euphoria, barely a second or two, and then I'm back to normal but, strangely enough, having an idea or thought that suddenly solves a problem I've been pondering. Funnily enough, I haven't started having these pains recently, as you might expect, but have been having them for as long as I can remember. The closest thing that I can think of that comes close, and I have experienced this in a moment of youthful silliness, is to take your forefinger and poke it into a two-prong 240 volt light socket while it's turned on.- MetalLizard, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1Pain A) It sounds like a symptom of poor posture. I may be incorrect, but the next time this happens, try to correct your posture while sitting at the computer. Move your chair up closer to the keyboard, sit up straighter.
Pain B) It is related to your nervous system. Some people will get these same sensations when a good melody plays on a movie, or an emotional event happens in their life. Ever hear the term spine tingling? Some people get it more intense than others, and some can produce it on their own. It is nothing to worry about.- celotil, on 03/29/2008, -0/+0Actually, the spine tingling sensation I can produce at will. I call it "snakes around a pole" because that's what it feels like, as well as generating goose bumps, and on more than one occasion I've done it to the point that it caused, I suppose, "voluntary" convulsions and most of my muscles spasm - causing rigid seizure. The burning soda pop is down the front of my body, and it's not pleasurable at all while it happens.
The funniest thing is, if I do "snakes around a pole", to a minor degree, next to three different girls, they get all antsy all of a sudden. Only one, who I explained it to, gets ***** at me and walks away, because she reckons she feels it - this was one of my first psychic experiments by the way, and lead me to wondering about empathic psychic ability.
(Don't dig me down for the psychic comment. I was searching for something, ANYTHING, which might make this a more interesting world to live in, as I explained in an earlier comment in a dissimilar thread.)- jinxplayer, on 03/29/2008, -0/+0Your a Psychic AND a Doctor (look at his previous posts)? People please please please go see your primary care doc if you have had a pain lasting longer than a couple days. Please don't come to the ER just because it was your day off and had nothing else to do. You will end up wasting your time in the waiting room and just getting angry at the staff. Plus you can delay treatment for those who really need it. - Cattywampus, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1I thought a few of them were good. I never would have thought of the back/shoulder pain that can be an aortic dissection. I knew about the angina/heart attack symptoms--chest pain, especially along with pain in the jaw or arm--but a lot of people don't know that one, and it's a pretty clear sign of heart problems.
The calf pain is a good indicator, especially among people who spend a lot of time traveling or sitting in one place a long time (um, 90% of those on Digg?), and the burning feet or legs... with so many cases of undiagnosed diabetes, ignoring that problem could be very harmful. - HolyShiite, on 03/29/2008, -1/+1buried for ignoring blue balls

Go to a Grocery Store, bought a Frozen dinner $3.49....drove home, cooked it right away....
Had insurance in 2003...got a critical case of food poisoning...yeah, it was bad...not going to get graphic, just take my word for it.
Anyways, All they said was I had Food Poisoning.... $400
2 days later, I had severe chest pains...went to the ER they scanned me....$500 (Symptom of the Food Poisoning.)
Couldn't eat anything for about a week...liquids were hard to keep down even....
Got a call from the Insurance Company 5 days later, saying that they do not cover Hypochondriacs (Food Poisoning is a common one...)
I had to foot the nearly $900 medical bills.
Tried to talk to the grocery store where I bought the dinner, and all they said, is I should have stuck it in the freezer right after I got home....yeah right.
I learned 2 important lessons.... Medical Bills are very expensive.... and I will never go to that grocery store again.- gl77, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1move to a country that has universal health care.
