- heiroglyph, on 05/11/2008, -1/+5How doesn't this equate to conspiracy to commit murder, with everyone involved doing hard time?
If one or more patients die of liver failure, then add on murder counts.- gquaglia, on 05/11/2008, -1/+5Reusing a needle? In this day and age? No its recklessness for the sole purpose of saving a buck. Jail time is warranted.

- Niixxon, on 05/11/2008, -1/+6What the hell is so hard about ordering more needles? And as far as the anesthesiologist they should loose their damn license. Explain how you cant afford needles but you can afford to pay an anesthesiologist close to 300k a yr?
- heiroglyph, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3Lose their license? For what amounts to multiple murders? Victims with a lifetime of suffering, potentially transferring the disease to their spouse?
These bastards need to get punishment fitting the crimes.

- sonnybobiche, on 05/11/2008, -1/+10Syringes are cheap, guys, come on. Just charge the patients if you have to, but don't start reusing stuff. Or at least run some alcohol through them first!
Lazy and frugal is a bad combination in medicine.- dagnome1984, on 05/11/2008, -1/+2I remember the old needles were designed to be reusable. I wonder if they used that type of needle in this case, but didn't practice proper sterilization.
- gh0st3000, on 05/11/2008, -0/+5i wasn't aware anyone used the medical grade stainless steel syringes anymore, i assumed everyone switched to plastic due to the eliminated transfer risk and the fact that disposables are now cheap and easy to make. Skimping on syringes is probably the dumbest possible thing to try saving money on.

- heiroglyph, on 05/11/2008, -2/+1Wow, good thing we have privatized medicine. The board of directors would never knowingly harm patients to save a buck.

- bincoder, on 05/11/2008, -1/+2whats a syringe cost, a penny for a thousand? If someone uses used ones it should be an automatic death sentence, no matter if its a nurse, Dr. House, Dr. Spock, or the cleaning lady, because thats the chance they are taking on the patients.
- zlwise, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1Tons of articles on the story here:
http://lasvegassun.com/news/topics/hepatitis-scare ... - Fygee, on 05/12/2008, -0/+2I was one of the patients there last summer, and I had a procedure done to fix an esophageal stricture one week before one of the patients who contracted Hep C had a colonoscopy done there.
I was tested and thankfully I came up negative, but that was one of the biggest scares I've had in a long while.
I actually met with Dr. Desai in person before the procedure as well. Little did I know what kind of person he was and that I was essentially sitting with evil.
For clarification on why they were doing this, reusing the syringes slightly shortened the amount of time required to fully service a patient, and they were able to see around 4-8 more patients a day (as the place was always packed). As a result, they were able to make more money by getting people through quicker.- PharmacistMike, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0I am glad to hear that your Hep C tests were negative.
- jtown, on 05/12/2008, -0/+0Every person in that clinic who was involved in this should spend time in prison. Reusing needles like that is absolutely inexcusable. It's beyond belief that trained medical professionals would even consider the practice to be acceptable. "Oh, but I did complain and said it was wrong" doesn't cut it. This is "stand in front of the building with picket signs" bad. Any person who knew this was happening and wasn't screaming at the press and standing in front of the building warning people away needs to see the business side of a steel and concrete cage.
- PharmacistMike, on 05/15/2008, -0/+0Besides the stupidity of the practice of not using new anesthesia meds for each case, did you catch this, "The practice had not received a full inspection since 2001, although state policies dictate that ambulatory surgical centers be reviewed every three years. The licensing agency has blamed the delay on insufficient financing for inspectors."
Perhaps the shortage of inspectors is because inspectors don't have comparable salaries. I know in my state the pharmacy inspectors make a fraction of what a regular pharmacist would make. This appears to be across the board in a lot of industries. They just don't want to pay to have someone watch the hen house. - firewound, 13 hr 21 min ago, -0/+1hmm...an odd choice of image. but I'm sure Ashton does have more strains of Hepatitis than most celebrities.
