- shadus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Yah, I'm not looking for ways to increase mental acuity... I'm looking for ways to lower it so I don't go bat-***** insane from the massed amounts of utter stupidity.

This is what Buddhists practice ALL day, let alone 10 minutes - it's called compassionate awareness, and he's right, it can seriously rock your world if done right and with diligence.
Speaking of which, he fails to mention possibly THE most effective way to boost practically every facet of your mental abilities, meditation. - Teaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm glad I'm not the only one.
- Aulë, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3im smelling movie plot......oh ***** already been done.
- Voltagensis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There are many things you can do to boost your brainpower.
Nootropic drugs such as Piracetam and Modafinil are potent brain-boosting substances. There are less potent and more common herbs and chemicals found in health food stores and at your local chemist -- pycogenol, wheatgrass, gingko biloba, bacopa monniera, vinpocetine, and DMAE. They all carry their own side effects, but the ones that I named have good results and a near-perfect safety profile backing them.
I found that my biggest problem child was a lack of discipline. I was blessed with a good mind, but I was not given the discipline nor motivation to use it. I have an unusually keen memory and almost immediate comprehension of anything I read or see, but without the need to put these abilities to use you could say that great minds go to waste. Regardless of how "powerful" your mind is, it's more how you use it. A person with a 110 IQ working diligently their entire lives will always beat a slacker with a 145-160 IQ, however "genius" he may be. Creative thinking rarely beats determination, and creative thinking is considered the biggest separation between the lower and higher groups on the IQ chart. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5"In more than 80 clinical trials, Dr. Glenn Wilson, a psychiatrist at King’s College London University, found that workers distracted by phone calls, e-mails and text messages suffer a greater loss of IQ than if they’d smoked marijuana."
That would be significant if IQ meant jack *****. - bigstinky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My friends' father plays in the symphony. He tells me that on nights where they are expected to play a solo, the musicians will eat a bunch of bananas. Apparently, it helps them to focus easier.
- gummih, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21. You are what you eat, and that includes your brain -> Drink Coffee
2. Think positive, loving thoughts; it is easier than you might imagine -> A GOOD cup of Coffee
3. Don’t be a slave to technology -> Turn off the cell phone and PC
4. Physical exercise can boost brain as well as brawn -> Drink immense quantities of Coffee
5. Never underestimate the power of a good night’s rest -> Once you finally are able to sleep, sleep in
6. Put your mind to work in the right way -> Before you get dressed, have a large cup of strong, revitalizing, nerve shattering Coffee - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"IQ means plenty. It may not be an all-encompassing measure of intelligence but it's not useless. You seem pretty angry about it. What's yours, if you don't mind me asking?"
I've never actually taken an IQ test. But, there is a lot of controversy surrounding testing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IQ#Controversy). - AllnightChemist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"You are what you eat, and that includes your brain."
So if I eat brains...wait. - juno660, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Everything in that article was completely obvious.

- soulpiercer7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Asendant
I wish I could Digg you up a thousand times. Digg is the number one source for my lack of productivity. Without Digg, I can only imagine the amount of work I could get done...
It's amazing how interwoven love and hate can be... - jessecrouch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17. stop reading digg
- MatTipton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OK, there are no corporate IQs. Get over it, you have the same IQ as everyone else. First off, it's just bad assumption to think everyone would want to do this. Sure it sounds good in the work environment in performance reviews and whatnot... but unless you are brainwashed, we should NEVER expect truly realized goals on a personal level at work.
Second, even if you did want to do this, you are most likely not taking into account all of the implications. I don't think we should make career improvements such a personal matter. Is it worth it? NO. False goals are truly the most worthless thing I can think of. Simply "sounding good" should never be a goal, IMO. Why would anyone want to work toward a goal that has no substance. Sure it all might "sound good", but in reality what REALLY needs to happen? You'd be better off focusing on numbers or metrics rather than yourself... don't make it so personal.
In my opinion we should not view our job performance as a personal deficiency. We would be better off to strictly make it a numbers game because that is what really matters with your job. Not to say you don't personally matter... but I think it's just better off to think of the numbers as the things that need to be improved. Sure to improve numbers, personal improvements may be needed... but that does not imply that you need to be overly concerned about the true quality that's going on or any of the personal repercussions... simply work towards increasing the numbers and leave it at that.
OK, so maybe that's not how it "should" work... but that's how business works. Think about it. At work it's always more, more, more.... or quicker, faster, cheaper. It's never better, better, better. With that in mind, I don't think tips like this will do anything at all for the average worker. In most cases, quality is just not so much a concern. If it is a concern, it is only a concern within determined regulations or spec. In the end, that means the vast majority of corporations are really concerned with quantity. Don't get me wrong, quality is a good thing... but as individuals, you'll be better off playing the number games. Think about it, what is considered more valuable in the business world? Numbers. Sure both sides have merit, but the winning side in the corporate environment always has a number behind it. - ramaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digg and distraction go together? Never!
Oh ... where did that last 45 minutes go?
:) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1IQ is a measure of aptitude at IQ tests. You connect the dots.
- eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4IQ means plenty. It may not be an all-encompassing measure of intelligence but it's not useless. You seem pretty angry about it. What's yours, if you don't mind me asking?
- bizchris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"You are what you eat, and that includes your brain"
I have never once eaten my brain. Well, maybe just a taste... - nadadingsda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"So, in essence, the average person is to me what a retarded person is to an average person"
You're right, I've never thought about it that way but it makes sense. That's depressing.. for the people with average IQ's. - nadadingsda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0So, I think what this means is that even when I'm juggling messages or smoking pot, I still have a higher IQ than 95% of the population, so its fine, right?
- CapnMarrrrk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Work is for saps and suckers. It's a necessary evil that drains my limited life force even as the pay never commensurate to the work I do perform therefore it behooves me to goof around on the job.
