- LeeMaple, on 05/15/2008, -6/+39So, let your daughter suffer for 10 years and almost die, don't seek a second opinion, don't tell the doctor that you think 10 years is enough trials for this treatment.... The problem isn't that you're intimidated by doctors, it's that you're stupid..
- Cancerkitty, on 05/15/2008, -2/+33Guys make a couple of those mistakes too, at least I know I do. Especially just taking the doctor's word as gospel, that landed me in the hospital for a few days.
- AlwaysAwake, on 05/15/2008, -2/+28Much of this is just as true for men as it is for women, except the gender bias part. None of us ask enough questions, whether it is of Doctors, or of each other in normal "relations". We most often jump to conclusions with out verifying facts with others. Then we either do no research and investigation, or too much. It is all the result of our separation from each other, and failure to see the value of co-operating as equals. Basically we often trust noone at ail, least of all , and our valuable intuitions.

- Zonks, on 05/15/2008, -3/+17I know the interpretation one is irritatingly right...when my mother would take my younger siblings to the doctor she would actually ask for certain types of medicine because "she knew what was wrong". The doctor told her my brother was fine and just had a standard cold, and that he should go back to school. She responded "isn't there something you can give him?" He looks up to her, takes out his prescription pad and says, "Okay, what medicine do you want?"
She walked out and got a new doctor. Honestly, I want to shake that doctor's hand and congratulate him for not taking my mother's *****. - kashk5, on 05/15/2008, -2/+154. They're not in the kitchen
- kilworth, on 05/15/2008, -2/+15Sexist day at CNN?
- sbader, on 05/15/2008, -2/+14FTA: "At age 23, weighing just 112 pounds at 6 feet tall, her daughter became so sick and malnourished she ended up in the hospital." So yeah I'd say 158 is an improvement.

- bweltondav, on 05/16/2008, -0/+12Wrong--doctors aren't magicians, and they make mistakes. Suing a doctor over trivial ***** like minor misdiagnoses and your own stubborn refusal to get a second opinion waste everyone's time and keep doctors afraid of making bold decisions.
Now if your doctor is being blatantly incompetent, that's another matter. - dirtyhipster, on 05/16/2008, -1/+12That woman is a ***** retard
- CptofMySoul, on 05/15/2008, -3/+12OK, two things...
1) If the article is about how you can't say no or make a decision, you don't get to put in "I make decisions easily, and I say 'no' easily. " If that were true, there wouldn't be an article.
2) Being a woman doesn't give you ESP. Making a decision and being right isn't special. You just do it so rarely that it seems special. - fcruz1331, on 05/16/2008, -1/+9"3. Women don't recognize gender bias"
Too bad the whole article is gender bias... - SatansSpatula, on 05/16/2008, -0/+8They don't trust their intuition?
What the hell kind of "mistake" is that? How about, "they don't go for a second opinion." If your intuition tells you something is wrong with the doctor's prognosis, guess what, that doesn't mean jack *****. But if you're smart, and your doctor's treatment isn't working, and you get a second, differing opinion from an informed professional, then *that* is meaningful.
Buried as stupid. - chrissku, on 05/15/2008, -1/+8I'LL WRITE IT AND WE'LL DO IT LIVE. ***** THING SUCKS!
- Cheeselover, on 05/15/2008, -1/+8For 10 years you know your daughter probably has something worse than IBS and yet you don't get a second opinion? For God's sake, not even a google search on the symptoms?
In my opinion that's negligence on the mother's part. She claims she was aware it was something worse and yet she does nothing. Maybe being a good parent would have helped matters - SebG, on 05/16/2008, -0/+5Educated does not equal to common sense
- DerangedPenguin, on 05/15/2008, -5/+10I don't think there is a gender bias, this is a matter of not wanting to offend someone, the fear that you might actually hurt their feeling it is the end result of Political Correctness run a muck in our society.
We have schools where children don't keep score because then one group would be Loossseerrrs! We slap "Honors Student" bumper stickers on every child who does his job by getting an "A" or three on his report card. The Honors Student is no long the one child who gets straight "A's", is president of the Drama Club, the Computer Club, on the year book staff and the guard on the women's basketball team and still manages to volunteer to read to the elderly in the convalescent hopsital once a week. - nollek, on 05/15/2008, -2/+7what's a woman?
- jameshighmore, on 05/15/2008, -1/+5One of my best friends went to see the doctor because she was having heavy periods (eww- NO. Get over it.) and pains in her abdomen. The doctor simply said that she had naturally heavier periods, and to take painkillers. She didn't say anything, but she didn't think that he was correct in his diagnosis. She went a few more times and he said the same thing. Finally, when it was getting really bad, she went back and asked for more checks. It turns out she had Pelvic inflammatory disease [ http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/diseases/facts/pelvicin ... ], and if she had left it any longer she may have become infertile...
- KingGorilla, on 05/15/2008, -5/+9This new comment system scares and confuses me
- Rndm_Tngnt, on 05/15/2008, -1/+5158 for someone who's six feet tall isn't at all completely unhealthy. Especially since she's likely been put on a high calorie diet to, y'know, offset the dying that tends to happen from malnourishment.
- savantidiot, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3I have no doubt this is gonna get old, fast. But I had to digg it this once at least. The girlfriend and I lol'd way too hard at that video even the 3nd time through.
- Cancerkitty, on 05/16/2008, -0/+3Hey, mistakes happen; doctors can't know everything. I wouldn't sue the doctor over something like that. It was just as much my fault for not following up or seeking a second opinion when I doubted him.
- hayzeus, on 05/15/2008, -1/+4FTS!
- ItsMyWii, on 05/15/2008, -15/+18OMG NEW DIGG COMMENT SYSTEM!!!11! Sorry, but this is the first story I saw with the new system...bury me.
- ladyarcher85, on 05/16/2008, -1/+41 and 2 somehow contradict. If they over-research I am surprised they don't question their doctors.
- brycelb, on 05/16/2008, -1/+4Did someone let you out of your basement to use the internet? We need to speak with them.
- omenmedia, on 05/16/2008, -1/+4Her *gut* told her to get a new doctor for her daughter? Hell, if my gut talked, I think I'd be the one looking for the doctor. Start the reactor, Quaid!
- beaverfetus, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2none of these mistakes are as bad as the one men make... namely not going to the doctor till their condition is exacerbated. That would be one of the contributers to our shorter life expectancy.
Being stoic can kill you, hypochondria just makes you mildly annoying, most women seem to get this.
/check your testicles regularly for lumps
//be well - threemagic, on 05/15/2008, -1/+3I was hoping for things like, falling for the ole please get naked so we can have a look at your ear infection line
eh... - inactive, on 05/15/2008, -3/+5Another Digg fat supremist
While that weight is completely unhealthy, few people die from being too thin (besides outside the developed world) - Animan351, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2So am I to understand that they took a nice tall thin woman and after switching docs to get the "correct" diagnosis they turned her into a fat chic who poops in a bag?! HORRIBLE!!
JK, I'm not sexist, although thinking that was still funny to me.But I guess that might make me a bit sexist in itself.oh well. - chemdiva, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2particularly the very last sentence.
- kashk5, on 05/15/2008, -1/+3Aren't you being a bit generous with that number?
- sparrowkc, on 05/15/2008, -1/+3Several of these contradict each other...
- goldfishey, on 05/15/2008, -1/+3158 pounds = ~71.6kilograms according to google. So at 6 feet tall, that puts her in the middle of her healthy weight range. Which according to weight watchers is 67-84kg. (I know weight watchers may not be the best source - but I'm at least confident they are not very dodgy either!)
She's not even remotely overweight. - MellerTime, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2Aren't trusting "[your] valuable intuitions" and "[jumping] to conclusions, with out verifying facts with others" basically the same thing? They're both unsubstantiated gut-level reactions that may not have any factual founding at all.
The point is: All things in moderation. Don't be too eager to jump to conclusions, but don't just ignore that nagging feeling that something just isn't right either.
Doctors like it when patients take an interest in their treatment. If you've got a nagging feeling that something isn't right, ask them about it. 9 times out of 10 they'll tell you it's nothing to worry about, and at least that 10th time you'll have brought it up and feel better simply knowing that you're both on the same page and are both keeping it in mind. - BrendanSheehan, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2Yeah, woman don't trust their intuitions? Talk about sweeping generalizations.
I suspect it's Elizabeth Cohen who doesn't trust her intuition. - poet, on 05/16/2008, -1/+3Not very deserving of that Ph.D. now is she?
- peterjmag, on 05/15/2008, -5/+6Zion hear me! It is true what many of you have heard. For ten YEARS, Barbara's gut told her she needed to get a new doctor for her daughter! For ten YEARS, she didn't listen, even as her daughter got sicker and sicker!
- twertyto, on 05/15/2008, -4/+5I need closure for that story. ***** THING SUCKS!
- Marinium, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1No burying. I too was like WHOA, what's this, when the new comment system appeared.
- Auryn, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1#2 and #5 contridict each other to me.
your supposed to trust your intention, but not over-research?
come on now. - RobotBuddha, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Have you ever talked to someone over 50 about their relations to doctors? People are far more willing to confront doctors now. A couple generations back, they were right up there with priests in terms of people you just didn't talk back to.
- sven007, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Wow, Barbara Peacock. well done CNN
- zerobackup, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1Hahaha, oh wow.
