The tallest people in the world, the Maasai, eat nothing but meat blood and milk. - PresidentSoup, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10"Planet's Healthiest Countries"
Then why is USA listed in two of the categories? - 1longtime, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12Not very accurate. There are many ways to eat a meat-heavy diet and still be very healthy.
- ronaldinho, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9because they live in America?
- ajstewar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9What is portion control? Sounds like something those damn French would do.
- 11Heather, on 10/10/2007, -9/+17"In many countries, meat is a garnish. The traditional Chinese diet, for example, consists primarily of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains" Must be why the Chinese and other orient countries have such slim ladies, whilst Americans, Brits and Aussies have increasingly fat arses. Pays to like chinese food then.

Best piece of advice in the article. - swanny89, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Thats true in the US. The majority of foods on the market come from factories rather than farms, meaning lots of unnatural processing and chemicals that make all kinds of food terrible for you.
- abid786, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6But in general, some countries are fatter than others.
- kyleforeman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5This reminds me of the thong picture of the US vs France
- Nerdomatick, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Height doesn't really matter. The Maasai life expectancy is only about 45 years old for the men and 42 for the women. However the "short" Okinawans, Japanese and Locals of Hong Kong have life expectancies of 81, 80 and 79 respectively.
So,enjoy grabbing those items off the top shelf without a ladder. - Mullinator, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4If they didn't care then paid weight loss programs (which are incredibly stupid) wouldn't exist because they wouldn't make any money. It's not a question of caring, it's a question of whats easier and worth the time.
- kKhan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Holy ***** obvious? We've been told all of this for decades. It's no mystery. Americans aren't unhealthy or fat because of a lack of information. They just don't care.
- ChewyBass, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Without reading the article let me take a guess, McDonalds isn't on the list.
- ellecon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4If the diets of Greece and Italy are so healthy, why are most of my Greek and Italian friends/relatives overweight?
- ellecon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3If I did that I'd be drinking gravy and living off bacon and fried chicken skin. Thank goodness for vanity and a health obsession, or I would surely be 350lbs.
- Mullinator, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I am 21 years old and this summer I lost a total of 30 pounds by essentially following these exact recommendations plus jogging 4 times a week. These things really do work and you feel amazing as you are putting them into practice not only because eating good makes your body healthier but also because you really feel like you are earning the better body. You even feel better just knowing that what you are putting into your body is the exact kind of stuff we evolved to eat, it's the kind of diet that hunter-gatherers would eat.
I just want to add to this list as well: Drink LOTS of water, not flavored water or anything like that. Not sports drinks either, just water. Water is the substance that essentially cleans your body out. It also helps you feel full so you won't eat as much and it honestly does give your skin a healthy glow even after a day of high water intake. Don't mind all the extra trips to the bathroom, just think of them as your body doing a much better job than normal getting rid of various toxins still in your body. - ciscowannab, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Eating good is infectious!
Years ago I used to eat anything. It was mostly because I was just to lazy to prepare anything for my lunches. I would get really famished and hit the fast food.
One day back then I was microwaving some Velveeta and watched it turn into a waxy type thing that resembled plastic. That grossed my out. A week later I drank some fake OJ for breakfast and almost vomited from the corn syrup!
That's when I started to read labels - before it was popular. I could not understand why our food has so many chemicals?!
So over a period of ten years I slowly became educated as to how my diet made me feel. I was really surprised to find out some simple things could make or break my day. I just have a clearer head now than most of my coworkers and don't need to dump a bunch of sugar or caffeine into my system to feel normal. Not that some sugar and caffeine is bad, I like coffee and chocolate as much as anyone. Just have some control if you can.
Dint get me wrong.
I still enjoy a fast burger once every month or 2, not everyone who eats healthy is anal about it. And I don't preach to people.
I just feel for others because they are being steered by the norm and lack education on the matter.
Most people feel like if they try to eat better that other people will hate on them for being a health nut or some other social insult for healthy eaters.
Fact is it takes time to become a healthy eater. Trying some quick fix is just a waste of time. You will almost always return to the land of fast and easy. Take your time. Eat stuff you normally would not. If you can like 2 out of 10 things that is great! You just added 2 things to your diet that work for you, not the other way around.
It does not take a lot of effort to by some vegetables, breads, meats, and spices.
Most people would be surprised how easy it is to cook and the good thing about cooking is you can cook too much, so you can have leftovers for lunch at work or to put in the freezer for those busy days. So many times I reheat my dinner and everyone is like wow what is that smell! (in a good way :))
Not to mention how much cash and time you save by not having to drive out on your break and give someone money for food that is bad for you.
Also you have better energy for:
running errands
sex
using your brain for gaming, reading something, problem solving, etc.
And don't forget that you are more likely to live a little longer than others, but more importantly live better than others when you get older.
I see how many drugs our elderly are on and no thanks!
If its not for you that's cool.
Eat away.
And drive my insurance rates up when you get fat and clogged up like everyone else.
Eating good is infectious.
I just returned from visiting family and the crap we ate does not compare in flavor or substance to what I normally eat.
I am thankful to spend time with them, but I am also thankful I finally have come around and my body hates bad food.
Good luck to anyone trapped in the fast lane! - supaklaw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Meat has hormones, fish can contain many contaminate and toxins... shellfish especially. Vegetables can just as easilly have contaminants, such as e. coli like the packaged spinach. Fresh is the key... if you ate fresh fish, from non polluted waters... fresh beef from non-hormone ranchers it would be fine. I think Dole is currently recalling more spinach this week... processing is the main enemy.
- crankycookie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Groundbreaking!!! Who would have thought that eating vegetables and fruits is good for you?
- CleverEve, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"...today, the average American consumes more than 330 pounds of fresh produce per year..." how do they know they actually *consume* it? 'seems like I throw out almost that much produce each year because it goes bad before I get around to eating it.
- xGeneric, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah I went from 210 to about 180lbs last summer by just eating 5 small-medium meals a day instead of 3-4 huge ones with snacks in between. Exercise and weight lifting help, but the goal is to burn more calories than you take in. Eating more often but in small portions helps keep your metabolism up, keeps hunger away, and you can still eat anything you want unlike some other diets that restrict certain food groups entirely.

(2nd pic is NSFA ;) ) - rune420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm not a pro bodybuilder, but I feel I should mention that I've gained a lot of lean muscle mass by eating mostly just fish (I'm about 6'5" 210lb now, with very little fat). Just saying, you don't have to eat a lot of meat to gain muscle.
- NJank, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I get funny looks from guests when I follow the 'deck of cards' size recommendation for meat portions. that's about right for a standard boneless pork loin chop, but then people expect it to be 1 inch thick.
We americans like a big piece of meat covering 65% of a 12 inch dinner plate. Anything green requires seasoning (translation: butter, salt, or more reasonably, both). Spare plate room must be filled with empty carbs. pastas, potatoes, doesn't matter as long as they're slathered in something. And plan for seconds (but not of the veggies).
Saying I should do anything differently must make you a communist, a fascist, or a fascist communist (or maybe all three). - kent1146, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1He didn't mention the word "women" in his comment.
I'd stay away... you risk getting an eyeful of Pierre's business popping out of his Speedo, right around lunchtime. - civperc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Basically, stop jamming in drive-thru meals while commuting
- VeganG, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Whatever you say, hippy.

- aduzik, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If you want to see the world's unhealthiest food, come to the Iowa State Fair some time -- it's in August, so you've missed it for this year, but there's always next year. It's unbelievable what they'll fry and put on a stick. But Iowa seems to be leading the world in fried-food-on-a-stick technology. Well, maybe after that Jimmy Dean pancake and sausage thing on a stick they show on the Daily Show and Colbert Report all the time.

And drive my insurance rates up when you get fat and clogged up like everyone else. - artwork, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Why is India only listed under the "spices" bullet? The Indian diet has traditionally been vegetarian, whole grain, and unprocessed. It is a lot more than just the cliche spicy.
- TheDHC, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1is that why you wont look at me when you make love to me
OH GOD! NO - Thorox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Why didn't the guy making country deep fried bacon make the front page?

Enjoy explaining to you boy why his penis was malformed from his mother consuming lots of soy products. - emjaymj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Obviously you looked at the article. There's NO way you could have known that.
- swordedge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Medical care. we make up for bad eating habits in the operating room
- cubicrystal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1By what parameters do these *experts* base these ludicrous studies on? How exactly is health measured? Do they take mental health into consideration as well? And how can you not when the body is a complete system - mind, body and soul. Is a warring, violent, addicted society necessarily a healthy one? Do they take averages from hospitals to grasp at these conjectures? Just remember this - eat food with the least amount of chemicals and alterations done to it (no GMO's or hydrogenated oils), eat when relaxed, happy, grateful and mindful and eat local produce, breathe, bless and share. :)
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"Fish" is not meat according to most nutritional models, including the Biblical one.
- swordedge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1In Japan portion control means that to get what a normal American meal consist of, you would take till bed time opening hundreds of little containers. Here they super size your meal. There, super sizing a meal might get the portion up to what we feed kids.
- Scheissen, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2aww someone's fat and taking his anger on the internet. Eat up chubbs!
- cubicrystal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The CNN article is written from a purely a hedonistic culinary POV with an international spattering of cultural idiosyncrasies with not one mention of eating patterns' relationship to socio-psychological stratas, namely the demographics of violence, addiction and mental illness pervasive or not in those countries cited.

Amen! - enoerew, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I think the best advice is to savor your food. If you're really enjoying what you're eating it seems to melt in your mouth like cotton candy.
- dukeochutney, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0ya i was hoping for something like eating off women is healthy for you.
