  • inactive, on 09/02/2008, -2/+35I have a hard time believing Digg will be the vector of choice for delivering this article to 50-somethings, but just in case: women - don't cave into societal pressures to be who you aren't, and don't buy into basing your self worth on how good you look/dress. Be yourselves, get new hobbies, vote/think about issues and not superficial things like gender or race, and for god's sake, keep learning. Don't ever be above learning something new about yourself or the world we live in. It's sad to see how many brilliant female minds occupy themselves with the likes of fashion or looks or meaningless relationships.

    So basically, after 50 a woman finally figures out all the stuff us guys have known since our early 20s. Way to go, women! Only took you twice as long to figure out life!

When they're bombarded with images of cellulite, stretch-mark free, 6 ft tall, C cup gravity-defying breasts every single goddamn day, and made to feel bad when they don't have those qualities? There's a valid statistic somewhere that little girls as young as nine WANT to lose weight! Cos they think they're ***** fat, when really they only weigh as much as 30 lbs. And us as a society in our celebrity-obsessed culture isn't helping when all we seem to focus on is is looks and not brains. Little girls, when they see Paris Hilton getting attention, they're not going to think she achieved that by going to uni, working her ass off, no, they're going to think she achieved that by acting dumb, partying and releasing a sex tape. We also live in a society where it's okay for a guy to explore his sexuality, get drunk, disrespect women, fart, swear, do the ***** he pleases while girls are expected to stay at home, and be these cookie-cutter virgins, or they're labelled a slut! Yes, it's no wonder it takes a lifetime for women to free themselves of these reigns, cause society conditions them in so many ways, every single goddamn day to act a certain way, look a certain way, be a certain way (hence the "nice girl") to try and "keep us in our place." Or we're meant to feel bad. While men are let off the hook (not totally, but they do have it easier). Really, there's no pleasing you men these days.

Most of the geeks ( smart ones ) left, leaving behind the 20 something dorks ( like geeks, but without the brains ) though there are *some* of the general audience people digg was aiming for.

    Most of the internet is still the domain of people under 30, men, and Americans. In other words, adolescents or people who act like them.

Digg started off as a user contributed IT news site. The geeks left after the changes, leaving only the dorks ( people who are like the disadvantages of geeks, but none of the brains ). Many of the comments in this article show how much work the owners of Digg still have to do to attract the kind of readership they need to support a general audience, user news contributed, social networking site.

    There is not motivation for intelligent people with interesting things to stay.

    Disagreement is interesting, but adolescent retorts like the comments in this thread are just dull. Been there, done that in junior high.

This statistic rings true as I used to be one of them, and I was as skinny as a nine year old could be, but remember thinking I still had a pudgy stomach. It's really sad... what lengths society will go to keep women out of the workplace.
