- LonelyTylenoL, on 06/02/2009, -1/+13Everyone has their own personal free gym. It's called gravity.
- eastwood24, on 06/01/2009, -0/+12I cancelled my gym membership and stopped eating out for lunch completely. I know make a sandwich and eat fruit at in my office then immediately take a 2 mile walk everyday. The outcome, I save about $150 a month, still maintain weight and have more energy in the afternoons.
Late night munchies are still an issue though :) - randypanda, on 06/02/2009, -0/+9Honestly, the biggest thing I found which leads to a healthier and cheaper lifestyle is just to drink water instead of any other soft drink (including juice) just buy a cheap water filter if you hate tap and go crazy with it. Drinking your calories is perhaps one of the worse things you can do to your body.
- cawfee, on 06/02/2009, -1/+9Eat more rice. It's a great buffer for anything and will even make a handful of veggies look and act like a full meal.
- Jaydo, on 06/02/2009, -0/+6on their recommended organic purchases: I would definitely recommend buying organic bananas. Not on the idea of not eating pesticides, or hormones, but on the fact that organic bananas just taste sooooo god damn good. They have a better and much more powerful taste than modified bananas.
Also, milk. Organic milk is the *****. - quickgold192, on 06/02/2009, -0/+5false. unhealthy food is cheap
- btraxx, on 06/02/2009, -0/+5BROWN rice!
- treecha02, on 06/02/2009, -0/+4A lot of people have large freezers in a basement or garage that they could store a large amount of meat in. And considering you would be getting all different cuts of meat, including normally expensive steak cuts, $5-6 a pound is pretty good.
I agree about the medical tourism part of the advice though. That part is weird. - inactive, on 06/02/2009, -0/+4My right index finger is very fit.
- ghatid, on 06/02/2009, -0/+4Don't digg him down! Chinese/indian/others that I didnt mention have been eating rice for thousands of years...it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be as long as it's not the only thing you're eating...
- ghatid, on 06/02/2009, -0/+3This is...a weird list. I think people who choose to eat organic (*shrug) don't just worry about pesticides. But this article seems to assume so, thus the list of things you should/shouldn't buy organic.
Then they tell you that “You can buy a quarter, half, or even a whole cow for an average of $5 to $6 per pound—far less than what you would pay for naturally-raised meat at the grocery store,” what the hell? Who can store a whole, even a quarter of a cow? and 5-6$ seems kind of expensive...and what kind of meat is this if it's not naturally-raised?
Go to Costa Rica/Mexico for healthcare? Or thailand for an organ transplant? Maybe because they were farmed illegally?
This whole thing is strange to me...Did you guys read the article? - wolfkeeper, on 06/02/2009, -0/+3And most people don't know this, but gravity operates even when you're lying down!
- emecks, on 06/01/2009, -0/+3Cheaper and healthier, exactly what every Scotsman needs :D
- dizmoz, on 06/02/2009, -0/+2I don't agree with these arbitrary numbers being thrown around... "you'll save.." BAHHH
- ZachGlazer, on 06/02/2009, -0/+2Something that general science has been praising lately has been calorie restriction. It may sound rash but people tend to live longer and healthier by eating less. It is difficult but fight through it and soon you'll find that you don't need nearly as much food as you once thought. I don't think this article mentioned it.
- nepidae, on 06/02/2009, -0/+2a true scotsman wouldn't care about healthier
- psykiv, on 06/02/2009, -0/+2For the majority of people, simple calisthenics and jogging should provide pretty much all the working out you need.
- emecks, on 06/02/2009, -0/+2I didn't say I cared... just that it's something we'd need ;)
- mattofasia, on 06/02/2009, -0/+2Its irony that you talk about organic bananas. All the yellow 'natural' bananas you eat are all GMO. From the 1800's, however. They are all cloned from 1 mutant plantain tree a frenchman found.
Organic does not exist. There is edible and inedible. Thats it.
- btraxx, on 06/02/2009, -1/+3Healthy food is usually more expensive than cheap processed crap. That food is unhealthier, resulting in fat poor people.
- KingGorilla, on 06/02/2009, -0/+2***** that. What about those of us who like to normally cook meals but eat out on occasion. I mean, I suppose I could do one or the other entirely... but that obviously wouldn't even be a hundredth as reasonable as being able to do both
- btraxx, on 06/02/2009, -0/+2Those with allergies or asthma that bothers your lungs should try drinking organic milk, helps tremendously.
- Frisbinator, on 06/09/2009, -0/+1This is a great article full of great links, come on people, digg up stuff like this instead of stuff pointing the finger at some random preacher or shallow articles that contain the headline "sex"
- grimacebrown, on 06/02/2009, -1/+2Tip 1-43
Don't eat so much ***** crappy food... - ramtest, on 06/03/2009, -0/+1Take exercisies early morning
- tymme, on 06/02/2009, -0/+1You'll save $905 a year using a Wii and Wii Fit vs having a personal trainer!
Well, I'll save an extra $340 by not having either one. - vault, on 06/03/2009, -0/+1Unsweetened tea, also.
- kashk5, on 06/02/2009, -0/+1I sort of agree. quickgold is correct in that unhealthy food is dirt cheap, but if you're dirt poor, then you just tend to eat less overall, which leads you to lose weight. This is my current situation. I'm really low on funds, but I still buy healthy food like brown rice and frozen veggies. They're not expensive, but I eat less to get them to last longer. Then again, if I were buying unhealthy food and still eating the same small portions, I would still lose weight.
- ramtest, on 06/03/2009, -0/+1Good solution
- kevintmckay, on 06/02/2009, -0/+1I do the free body weight workouts at simplefit.org you do not need equipment and the site is free, and it was made by a Scotsman!
They also have great nutrition advice if you have the discipline to implement
Cheers - anusuya, on 06/02/2009, -1/+1You will take vegitables in breakfast.
- paulmer2003, on 06/02/2009, -2/+2"Skip eating out. Cooking a meal at home that serves four to six people will cost as little as $7 to prepare, compared with the average restaurant meal, which is $40.78 per person in New York City. That’s if you’re a smart shopper and buy a month’s worth of groceries at a time, says Nanci Slagle, author of The Freezer Cooking Manual from 30 Day Gourmet."
***** that. What about those of us who like ethnic food? I mean, I suppose I could look up some recepie...but that obviously wouldn't even be a hundredth as good as going to an authentic place. - anusuya, on 06/02/2009, -1/+1Take rest 8 hrs everyday.
- inactive, on 06/04/2009, -0/+0It is true one can live healthier by doing some exercises . Always make yourself tention free .
- edealeasy, on 06/02/2009, -1/+1usefull
- zagatbuzz, on 06/02/2009, -1/+1In this economy, lists like this can be very helpful. Thanks for posting!
- ASUgraduate2009, on 06/08/2009, -0/+0I have to say looking around for health insurance totally saved me money too.
I found GradGuard.com compared all kinds of insurance (health, renters, car, travelers...)
Websites like these have saved me so much by just looking for a cheaper price!
In this economy we can all use a few tips on pinching pennies ;) - newzdude, on 06/02/2009, -2/+1This is really appropriate for the times. I wish everyone the best. Times have been rough.
- quickgold192, on 06/02/2009, -2/+1one solution: go to bed before midnight
- doublestuforeo, on 06/02/2009, -5/+2conan is on!
- manbearpig1, on 06/02/2009, -5/+2These lists are always ***** pathetic.
- bhavinp, on 06/02/2009, -6/+2I think being poor kinda automatically forces you to eat healthy. Having money just enables people to eat and drink lots of food.
- ivy200949, on 06/02/2009, -5/+0Everyone has their own gym
