- purplesun2, on 04/14/2009, -0/+41Terri Schiavo had no brain left, folks.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Schiavo_catscan. ...
There was nothing anybody could do with that kind of brain injury. There's no chance of recovery. The only thing she most likely felt was constant pain, no matter how misleading those photographs her family released might seem. Letting her die was the right thing to do, in this particular case. - asgardshill, on 04/14/2009, -1/+35I'm sorry to break this to the "I hate Michael" crowd here, but the majority of Terri Schiavo's brain matter at the end of her life had degenerated to a liquid goo. And liquid feels nothing, senses nothing, and certainly doesn't sit up and ask for a big ol' refreshing glass of water.
Michael Schiavo did nothing wrong except have publicity- and cash-seeking religious nutjobs for in-laws. As a matter of fact, he did everything a human being could do to seek out responsible care for her. He even signed over her care in 2005 to the aforementioned publicity-and cash-seeking religious nutjobs, who promptly slapped a few stamps on her forehead and shipped her back parcel post to the original facility where she was receiving care.
So Get. Over. It. And make damn sure you leave some sort of rudimentary instructions about what you want done with your corpus BEFORE you find yourself in the same situation as Terri Schiavo. - Chakat, on 04/14/2009, -0/+24The autopsy found that Terri was ubdoubtedly in a PVS. Her brain, as it were, had atrophied to little more than a sac of cerebrospinal fluid due to irreversible damage.
- CdnBacon, on 04/14/2009, -1/+19When I was a small child, my older brother (he was 7 ) was struck by a truck and his skull was run over. He survived and lived the next 11 years in a vegetative state, so they called it, we would go see him as kids and watch him cry. I always thought that he was aware of his surroundings, but the staff would care for him as a vegetable. They never exercised him or stretched him, when I look back now I think that they could have done much more for him.
- ApokalypseNow, on 04/14/2009, -0/+13The situation there was different - CT scans showed that the majority of her brain had been liquefied. That was not a situation that one can recover from.
- inactive, on 04/14/2009, -0/+13Forgive me if I sound cold, but I can see why these people'd be treated with neglect. They have little to no chance of recovery, they require every need to be catered for no matter how small, and there's simply no way for the ward staff to know exactly what it is they need or want in the first place beyond basic life-support, since they're incapable of communicating in any form. Compare that to pretty much any other form of illness, even terminal cancer patients require less care for more reward.
It's a pity that people aren't tested properly for this sort of disorder, but I doubt that's the fault of the ward staff, more likely a matter of economics and probability. Just how common is PVS compared to similar but recoverable conditions, anyway? - Indyanna, on 04/13/2009, -13/+23fta: "Although Kate could not speak, or hear properly, or make any kind of signal, or take in sustenance except through a tube into the stomach, she was sometimes aware of herself and her surroundings. She had a raging thirst that was not alleviated by the ward staff."
Wasn't Terri Schiavo denied both food and water? - nikki2300dk, on 04/14/2009, -0/+10This is seriously disturbing. Trapped inside your own body. *shudder*
- smemily, on 04/14/2009, -2/+12Terry Schiavo's brain was mush. Entirely different than someone in a PVS who, by external signs, is unaware of their surroundings.
- palerogue, on 04/14/2009, -0/+7this makes me think of a recent house episode
- MelissaOfTroy, on 04/14/2009, -1/+7But then they should probably, by your logic, just be euthanized. Denying them food and water and just neglecting them is torture, regardless of their chances of recovery.
- poidh, on 04/14/2009, -1/+760% of vegetative patients post on Digg.
- inactive, on 04/14/2009, -0/+6If you have an advanced directive, make sure it is very, very clear. State in detail what you want to happen in every conceivable situation where you are not able to direct your treatment. It never hurts to be prepared.
- svtpete, on 04/14/2009, -0/+5That's the first thing that I thought about as well, I can't imagine not being able to communicate but being fully aware of my surroundings and senses.
- inactive, on 04/14/2009, -1/+5This scares the hell out of me. I hope I'm never in this situation. I keep thinking of the Metallica One video...*shudder.
- smemily, on 04/14/2009, -1/+4How was a vegetable frequenting a pier? And how the ***** was she talking either?
- marioara, on 04/14/2009, -0/+2I could think of no other worse nightmare than this.
- thoughtsonthis, on 04/13/2009, -16/+18I could have screamed for Terri Schiavo. This situation is something I always hope will never happen to any of us.
- Andrwmorph, on 04/14/2009, -0/+2Sounds like death is preferable.
- notzak, on 04/14/2009, -0/+1House already did it.
- anagoge, on 04/14/2009, -0/+1People diagnose me with this on a daily basis.
- Paulish, on 04/15/2009, -0/+1Imagine how it must feel as every muscle in your body slowly atrophies, all the while being unable to lift a finger to stop it. I hear that atrophy is very painful.
- mockupscaledown, on 04/14/2009, -1/+2Wow. Reported.
- LordKorax, on 04/14/2009, -5/+6At first I saw "40% of 'vegetative' plants misdiagnosed." This makes a lot more sense.
- riffic, on 04/14/2009, -1/+2who cares, I thought it was funny.
- Candorhavoc, on 04/15/2009, -0/+0Let me guess, first he ruled out lupus.

- Pixelante, on 04/14/2009, -2/+0Get shot.
- FordSVT1, on 04/14/2009, -6/+1I cant remember anything
Cant tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
This terrible silence stops me
Now that the war is through with me
Im waking up I can not see
That there is not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now
Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please god,wake me
Back in the womb its much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But cant look forward to reveal
Look to the time when Ill live
Fed through the tube that sticks in me
Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me
Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please god,wake me
Now the world is gone Im just one
Oh god, help me hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please God help me
Darkness imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell
Landmine has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell - Skurt, on 04/14/2009, -5/+1There is a decided lack of humor on Digg.com
- waleedo, on 04/14/2009, -6/+2no sh*t
- inactive, on 04/14/2009, -10/+6My name is Buck, and I'm here to *****.
- Whatasillyhat, on 04/14/2009, -8/+1One.
- Pixelante, on 04/14/2009, -7/+0Then be a man and shoot the patient.
If I ever end up in the same situation, and it's a surgeon's fault, I'm making damn sure someone takes out that surgeon's family. Nothing motivates like murder. - Skurt, on 04/14/2009, -10/+2Yeah, I was misdiagnosed once, at first they thought I was a carrot, but they decided after much examination, I was a turnip
/but I got better - inactive, on 04/14/2009, -12/+3So there was a vegetable fequenting a pier each day. One day a man walked up to her and asked if she'd ever been hugged, she responded no so he gave her a hug. The next day the very same man walked up to her and asked if she'd ever been kissed, she said no and he gave her a kiss. The next day he came up and asked if she'd ever been *****, she said no, so he threw her in the water and said "Now your *****!".
- foucaultsvac, on 04/14/2009, -18/+5Oops. Sorry Terri. Your "husband" was an assh*le.
- inactive, on 04/13/2009, -21/+2What's the worst part about ***** a vegetable...?
