- patrickchee, on 05/28/2008, -0/+14I would also add to this the importance of using a water pick. I was surprised the first time I used it with how much more food and plaque it got than just flossing alone did.
"Excess consumption of fluoride can cause mottling of the teeth." I have heard mixed things regarding the use of fluoride, some say its poison while others claim it is helpful to preventing tooth decay. What is the deal? - smartcause, on 05/29/2008, -1/+13Too much fluoride has caused irreversibly discolored teeth in 1 out of 3 children. -- Centers for Disease Control
Toxic levels (of fluoride) can lead to severe, permanent pitting of the enamel in children. Fluoride can build up in the bones and cause pain, stiff joints, and skeletal abnormalities. --National Academy of Sciences.

- spyd3rweb, on 05/29/2008, -4/+9The Fuhrer demands you take your fluoride doses so you stay docile and complacent, and so the Aluminum and Fertilizer industries have a place to dump their toxic waste, in your water.

Cures gum disease in 90% of cases that would normally require surgery and also promotes bone re-growth. - Totalkeen, on 05/29/2008, -0/+5This article suggests foods containing fluoride compounds are good? I was under the impression that fluoride is only good for your teeth while used topically, yet if ingested it builds up in your body over the years and causes problems (increased incidence of osteoporosis among them)?
It baffles me that people are still in favour of adding this toxin to water supplies. "Think of the children!", they say. Teaching kids to use toothpaste containing sodium fluoride would seem far more logical and holistically good for their well being. - inactive, on 05/29/2008, -0/+5"Fluoride compounds put into water are often contaminated with lead, arsenic and radio nuclides since the fluoride compounds are toxic waste byproducts which largely come from pollution scrubbers of fertilizer plants. A study published in 2000 showed that the dumping of toxic silicofluoride compounds into water ("fluoridation") causes an increase in blood lead levels in children."
- Markpdotcom, on 05/29/2008, -0/+4Sorry, but wtf is a water pick?
- G1MPY, on 05/29/2008, -1/+4I believe fluoride is good, as long as you don't swallow it. Dentists use fluoride to strengthen teeth, and I was recommended fluoride mouthwash, so I would assume it's not entirely bad. I think as long as one avoids ingesting it, it's cool.
- inactive, on 05/29/2008, -1/+4*****. Fluoride added into the water supplies is toxic. Vancouver Canada does not use fluoride and its residents haver far less cavities than the does fluoridated Toronto citizens. I use water and shower filters in that house. After a year, the smell of non filtered fluoridated water is nauseating to me. This is a ***** article. It adds half truths with utter lies.
- conna, on 05/29/2008, -0/+3"Fluoridation is the greatest case of scientific fraud of this century." - Robert Carlton, Ph.D, former EPA scientist, 1992
fluoride was given to Jews in the camps. Some of the results other than death was docile prisoners.
"The German chemists explained of their attempt to control the population in any given area through the mass medication of drinking water with sodium fluoride, a tactic used in German and Russian prisoner of war camps to make the prisoners "stupid and docile"(Stephen 1995)

http://www.informationliberation.com/?id=14949 - unida767, on 05/29/2008, -0/+3Fluoride is only poisonous in high concentrations. It is added to the water supply of most western cities for the benefit of preventing tooth decay. The amount added is equivalent to an inch in 25 miles. High concentrations from ground water wells has shown to retard learning and behaviour. My Mum took fluoride tablets when she was carrying me and at 32 I still don't have a filling.

I've always wondered where the all the amazing advances in dental science is... you'd figure with bacteria causing the problem, there would be more clever ways of fixing it.
I've always wondered about UV light, antimicrobial solutions, antibiotics, etc's use in dental care - wipis, on 05/29/2008, -0/+2I wonder if there are any studies into the effects of teeth whiteners. I can't watch TV for an hour without seeing an ad for a new toothpaste with "whitening power" or home teeth whitening kits. I'm no granola eating, bongo beating purist but I'm always leery of anything that goes into my body and alters it. Yes I'll occasionally take Advil for a headache but I would prefer the natural method of drinking some tea and sitting down for a few minutes. Sure whiter teeth are great but, what if it eats at the enamel till I need sealant applied every year to keep them from rotting out?

Cue a joke on the British dental stereotype, when yet the nation on the whole consumes a lot of tea. - inactive, on 05/29/2008, -0/+2Flouride is needed in 3rd world countries where they don't have the toothpaste we have AND flouridated water.
The USA has too much flouride. - kpezzy, on 05/29/2008, -0/+2God its so great to see how many of my digg peeps are hip to the BS we are fed, now lets see you convince your parents, now thats a real task, I think my parents are retarded from the 60's
- smartcause, on 05/29/2008, -0/+2Apparently Wigglytooth does (fitting screenname for the thread). Also the CDC & NAS stats are from a video on that page that was done by a local ABC News affiliate, not by the people at Fluoridealert.org.
There's also a lot of information about it (including countries that have long since stopped fluoridating their water) at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_fluoridation_op ... - greenm1981, on 05/29/2008, -0/+1Wait, I have to avoid drugs that decrease saliva production? Goodbye teeth.
- jonmlm, on 05/29/2008, -1/+2not that surprising, actually
- lisaawesome, on 05/29/2008, -0/+1I think most people agree fluoride can be beneficial but there are always those who refuse to be rational. I trust my dentist when she says a little fluoride can help.
- ReyX, on 05/29/2008, -0/+1But what about our precious bodily fluids?
- donna1234, on 09/22/2008, -0/+1In addition to brushing and flossing, a healthful diet (with natural or added fluoride) protects teeth from decay.

- Haoie, on 05/29/2008, -0/+0Your city might put fluoride into your drinking water, it varys depending on your country/location.
- Rawry, on 05/29/2008, -1/+1How is any of this surprising?
Also, yay for more fluoride propaganda... - cdigioia, on 05/29/2008, -0/+0fluoridealert.org doesn't sound very unbiased.
Do you have direct links to either the CDC or the NAS? - wigglytooth, on 05/29/2008, -0/+0The amount of fluoride added to water is low and fluoride isn't added if natural levels are high enough or it's not logistically possible (makes sense). Fluoride is safe and only crazy high concentrations cause the mottling (fluorosis) mentioned in the article. A few people would like you to believe that it causes other diseases, like bone cancer, but that has never been proven. For more about fluoride, here are some good articles:
The Science and Practice of Caries Prevention (Journal of the American Dental Association): http://jada.ada.org/cgi/content/full/131/7/887

Haven't we gotten over that propaganda yet?
- Duncan3, on 05/29/2008, -0/+0It's of questionable benefit for your teeth (brush and floss is all you need) and bad in any large quantity, but you really NEVER want it coming near any other body tissues. Think of it as a fun little WMD atom.
- hukarez, on 05/29/2008, -0/+0Does this help in the regeneration of gums?
- wigglytooth, on 05/29/2008, -0/+0I posted this above before I saw this question:
