- Mystyrys, on 05/14/2008, -0/+15The article states, because there is no rapid test for that infection, and that it is an uncommon infection in humans.
- inactive, on 05/14/2008, -0/+12what is the world coming to when you can't get vital organs from diseased bums without getting andromeda strain?
- corryface, on 05/14/2008, -8/+22there should be a system in place where by your organs are automatically donated unless you decide to opt out. this would release organs that are clearly no longer used to people who desperately need them.
- davdev, on 05/14/2008, -0/+10Read the article and you will find out
- zjbird, on 05/14/2008, -1/+11I remember that scrubs episode!
- DamnMan, on 05/14/2008, -0/+8Because like the article says. Screening for it is not as easy as a simple blood test. in the time it takes for them to run the test the organs worthless. So they have to stick to the really BIG stuff like AIDS and Hep A/B/C. They told the patients that the donor was homeless and that there was a chance this sort of thing may happen. The patients decided that a potentially bad kidney was better than no kidney.
- Smiths, on 05/14/2008, -0/+7Brilliant plan! Not donating your organs will show all them rich folk!
I guess if you ever need a transplant you'd deny it on the same grounds, yes? - zjbird, on 05/14/2008, -1/+9Sometimes, there isn't time..don't you watch scrubs?!
- jessadhd77, on 05/14/2008, -1/+7Thank God your DNA wont be around after you die. Now lets hope you don't reproduce.
- jerrycan, on 05/14/2008, -1/+7That'll teach those ***** donor recipients.... Give em hell.
- AeroSquid, on 05/14/2008, -0/+6That is in your medical records so they would know about it.
also, ewww you have tuberculosis - mattsonster, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5omg. Someone call Dr. House!
- davdev, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5If you are desperate you would.
- Filmore, on 05/14/2008, -1/+5Holy crap... kill them twice to make sure they don't come back as zombies... Stupid black market organs
- inactive, on 05/14/2008, -1/+5I like that idea. That way only people who give enough of a ***** to bother opting out would do so. Most people are lazy and wouldnt.
That really is one of the better ideas I have seen on digg in a long time. - inactive, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4Digg is pretty much a zoo to any conservative. "Oh look honey, that person has a heart, how interesting. And that one over there doesn't want to work, God bless him!"
- scratchcardiain, on 05/14/2008, -2/+6This is a similar situation to the episode of scrubs "My Lunch", season 5 ep 20, very sad episode :(
- apmtt, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4So "I don't really like that person" equates to "that person can die for all I care even though I could potentially save their life but I choose not to"?
- triferlinks, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4scrubs!
- Slick42, on 05/14/2008, -2/+6Name one
- Cerialthriller, on 05/14/2008, -1/+6lol well if i died in an accident today and they took mine becuase i didnt get a chance to opt out, anyone with my organs would be getting tuberculosis, which is dormant in my body through medication, but wont be in theirs.
- TomFrost, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5Nobody ever checks for rabies!
(For the record, that was one of the most beautiful story arcs they've ever had on that show, second only to Ben's funeral) - inactive, on 05/14/2008, -1/+5One common myth is that if you are an organ donor and are injured, "they" will not work as hard to save your life so they can harvest your organs. It's 100% not true. Organ donation looks like a terrible process because the time between an organ being removed from the dead person, and being replaced is just a few hours at most. For people who need an organ, they usually only have an hour or two of notice to get their ass to the hospital to pick it up. Imagine, you are in desperate need of a liver, you have no idea when you will get one. All of a sudden, 2am you get a call saying we have one for you get to the hospital immediately. If you die, then they literally must begin removing your organs right away.
Cases like this happen, but are rare. Overall, organ donation has saved and enhanced many, many more lives than it has harmed. I'm an organ donor, because why the hell am I going to need a liver, kidneys, heart, etc when I'm dead? - ohhoe, on 05/14/2008, -1/+4Maybe because when you die and you don't need them anymore, if your body is in okay condition (lets say you died from old age, or something else not like cancer) all of your organs can save potentially 50 people.
- guyincognitoo, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2Scrubs is based on Brown medical school. The main characters, and some of the stories, are based on actual people and events.
- lucas22, on 05/14/2008, -3/+5Your telling me, i saw a guy so desperate he ate at mcdonalds. eeeewwww
- SkippyDoorknob, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2And that was based on (or at least inspired by) an actual case in 2004 where four people died from getting rabies from transplanted organs. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9C0 ...
- Enasni1212, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2You hope for strange things.
- aequitas82, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2I hope this turns everyone on to the need that is out there and to the idea that saving lives is SO EASY! you can go to the website : http://www.organdonor.gov/donor/index.htm to get a card, and discuss your choice with your family - that's it! you just potentially saved lives. don't take your organs to heaven, heaven knows we need them here!!
- DangerMouse9, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3I hope you or a loved one needs a transplant someday, but then are unable and die because something like this wasn't in place.
- BOFH2, on 05/14/2008, -1/+3Why bring that to the discussion? Liberal or Conservative the person should have enough brains to understand if they want to opt out.
- DangerMouse9, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2he's on digg, the chances of that happening are about as likely as Dubya getting re-elected for a third term.
- omnicore, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1I've never been to a hospital that checked drivers licenses as they entered the hospital to see if you're a donor.
- ncredblstrength, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus is "hard to detect" but common sense tells me that someone eating out of a dumpster just might have caught a disease spread by rat/mouse poop. In my opinion, that's like saying AIDS is hard to detect and then doing a blood transfusion with a prostitute from a third world country.
- kingmanic, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1I see mr.omnicore that you have the same antigen type and blood types as another patient of mine, Bill Gates. Poor fellow, has kidney failure. Well I think you are suffering from a serious heart defect I'll have to operate immediately. Please sign this waiver....
- omnicore, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2hospitals don't have access to the donor registry. They don't know and don't care if you're an organ donor.
- Protoss, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1"Screening for rabies would have wasted time we, and they, didn't have. Now I got us some lunch...and I think we should eat it."
- Cerialthriller, on 05/14/2008, -1/+3there are alot of studies that indicate donors are less likely to pull through in trauma situations
- soulonfire928, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1that is a sad episode...who would figure rabies from transplants?
Having to weight the benefits against the risks in a situation like this, I can't say I would've chosen differently, high risk or not. They weren't going to survive without new kidneys, but with something like this happening, I guess the most you could ask for is the woman hopefully got a little bit more time to live than she would have without receiving the transplant. - j3ff86, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1How to Save a Life was playing through my head as a I read the snippet and title.
- kmartshopper, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1The amazing thing is the number of people willing to receive an organ vs the number who are willing to donate...
- Cerialthriller, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1by the time they waited for my doctors office to open and call him for my records, wouldnt the organs be pretty much useless? also its not my fault some old lady coughed on me 22 years ago.
- SyntraFTW, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1Yeah, a lot alike but with different organs and a different disease.
- Murdats, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1and then they would lose their job and go to jail, losing their $100, 000 a year income and in fact all money, rights and privilages. your right anyone would take that deal, even if they knew it went against their very core being.
- ORBAT, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1That's called "Spam" here on the Intertubes, gramps. Don't do it.
- DangerMouse9, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2If by a lot of studies, you mean something you just pulled out of your ass, then I'll agree.
- omnicore, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2There would be a greater potential to abuse the system if that were the case.
- paradox4190, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1Not again, Dr. Cox. First rabies, now LCMV.
- RabidFurby, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1"Dr. Poppycock, do you concur lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus was the cause of death to the patient?", said Dr. *****
Dr. Poppycock declares,"I do concur! DAMN LCMV! DAMN IT TO HELL!!"
There is an awkward silence from the doctors as equipment hisses and buzzes in the background.
"Care for a drink Dr. *****?" questioned Dr. Poppycock hesitantly.
Which prompted the response from Dr. *****, "Yes lad, I could use a drink." - mrbrianxyz, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1Well, they were going to die anyway
