- nikisees, on 10/14/2008, -3/+75what?
- SHv2, on 10/14/2008, -0/+35I'd respond with something witty and amusing but all those movies on that tiny screen have blurred my vision.
- Calinthalus, on 10/14/2008, -1/+31I was told the same thing when I purchased my first walkman. Now, I'm an old man....with perfectly good hearing. All the while driving around Kentucky with Meshuggah blaring out the speakers.
- FlyingPhotog, on 10/14/2008, -6/+33Test survey sponsored by R.I.A.A.?
- MiddleOfNowhere, on 10/14/2008, -3/+29I think anyone using anything but these "tiny headphones" should be shot on the spot.
If they are good (which means you'll have to shell out north of $40), they will literally seal your ears, which means you don't have to drown out the real world's sound - accordingly, you can listen to music at *lower* volumes.
Bonus (and this is what I was referring to in my slightly provocative intro :) - consequently, the outside world doesn't have to listen to your crappy choice of Eighties Hair Metal, whiny Emo ballads or Nu Rock *****.
Seriously. I hate it when people have cheap-ass, "Let the whole ***** world share my spectacular taste in music" phones attached to their MP3 players. Here's a secret: The other fifty people on the bus think you suck. Big time.
Digg me down, but I think it's called "personal entertainment" for a reason. - OHGAlpha, on 10/14/2008, -4/+30so does this mean the death of heavy metal?
- TehProphet, on 10/14/2008, -0/+26that would be brutal..
- bananasluggy, on 10/14/2008, -14/+35Well, if I can hear your iPod from across the room, over the sound of my own iPod... chances are, it's too loud.
Some peeves: They're called "headphones," not "neckphones."
There's a setting on your iPod that allows you to set maximum volume. Go to a quiet room. Set the volume to whatever is comfortable in that quiet room. Leave it at that setting--any higher and chances are, you're doing damage (and annoying the crap out of everyone around you.)
If you must click through your music choices, don't wander around in a daze while your ears and eyeballs are otherwise occupied. Stop, do what you need to do, then go back and mingle.
A real peeve of mine is the Bluetooth headset... It's gotten to the point where I just ignore people who stare straight at me and say, "hello" in my general direction, or say anything "at" me, because I just assume they're talking to someone else on their earpiece. Well that, and it's impossible to see who is crazy and who isn't... everyone is talking to thin air.
People on iPods are completely deaf to the world around them and people on Bluetooths talk to themselves... Not Good. :(
It's going to suck when we get contact lenses with little view screens in them... no one will talk to anyone who has a real pulse. - inactive, on 10/14/2008, -3/+20I have to admit, this was a lame Rick Astley reference.
- inactive, on 10/14/2008, -1/+17Buried, I've seen these reports for years.
- shutaro, on 10/14/2008, -1/+16huh?
- zadadka, on 10/14/2008, -1/+16The same concerns were voiced when Sony Walkman cassette players came out decades ago.
I SAID "THE SAME CONCERNS WERE VOICED..........." - oda1, on 10/14/2008, -0/+15You're hard of reading too?
- BananaGrabber, on 10/14/2008, -1/+14The thing about that is that you have purchase ear/headphones that are almost just as expensive as your ipod in order to have some decent outside noise canceling. This way you don't have to turn up the volume as high.
- oda1, on 10/14/2008, -2/+15LOL OMG LOL!
- Teapotty, on 10/14/2008, -3/+15Do you have to be an expert to figure that out? I also think it doesn't help when some people wear tiny headphones in their ears.
- Splicernyc, on 10/14/2008, -1/+13Screw 'em. And for 1 in 10 iPod users: SCREW 'EM.
- zerton, on 10/14/2008, -0/+11Sounds like only Britons are going deaf so I should be fine.
- doshindude, on 10/14/2008, -0/+9Zunes FTW.
- robert001, on 10/14/2008, -2/+11that's what she said?
- hawkdude56, on 10/14/2008, -0/+9You can also sleep safe at night knowing that you are an extremely boring person.
- inactive, on 10/14/2008, -6/+14WHAT?
- inactive, on 10/14/2008, -0/+8come again
- Gir53457, on 10/14/2008, -0/+8No music, no piracy.
- CoreyTamas, on 10/14/2008, -0/+8The iPod is more dangerous than the Walkman for some reason? Those used earbuds, too.
- davidrools, on 10/14/2008, -2/+9Blame Apple for including such crappy earbuds with their ipods. They do nothing to isolate outside noise, requiring the user to turn it up to be able to hear over the ambient sounds of the bus, train, etc. The early designs were vented, too, so they literally broadcast the sound outward from the earbuds as much as inward.
Good isolation buds are the solution. They sound better, too. But no one should be listening to their iPods when they need to be able to hear outside sounds (w/ regular ipod buds or isolation buds or anything) when riding bikes, driving cars, or working in an office. I can't stand when people are oblivious to their surroundings because they hear nothing but their music. It's dangerous and often illegal. - TrevorBelmont, on 10/14/2008, -0/+7To the Americans (and some of the Brits) who don't know, The Daily Mail is a rag and shouldn't be considered as a source of news.

good song title. - elf25, on 10/14/2008, -0/+7I think they said this about the walkman.
- inactive, on 10/14/2008, -3/+10NEVA!!!!!!!!
MAAMRAA! - bobjrn2, on 10/14/2008, -1/+8more like the deaf of heavy metal
- inactive, on 12/26/2008, -1/+7Actually, the 80GB version comes with some kind of noise-isolating earphones, so yes, you are fine if you have a Zune :).
- ligyron, on 10/14/2008, -1/+7She may go deaf, but she'll still be hot as hell
- shutaro, on 10/14/2008, -1/+7Pfft... "Experts"... What do they know?
- DomZy, on 10/14/2008, -1/+6If I go deaf, I'll just turn it up louder so I can hear it again.
- BadseedJR, on 10/14/2008, -2/+7Yeah, exactly what I was going to say. It's not like iPods are the first portable music player ever. This study is redundant/ridiculous.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 10/14/2008, -0/+5Why not just set it to a safe volume and leave it there?
- borez, on 10/14/2008, -0/+5"Death of Metal"

- digitalpencil, on 10/14/2008, -3/+8can we start banning the people that keep digging dailymail stories up to the front page?
- LJRod82, on 10/14/2008, -0/+5It's your one way ticket to deafness. Call it, tiny earphones.
- scottnash, on 10/14/2008, -0/+5"Death of Metal"
good song title - edwartica, on 10/14/2008, -0/+5They said the same thing about walkmans in the 80s. Did you stop using yours back then as well?
- edwartica, on 10/14/2008, -0/+5I was going to say the same thing. In the 80s it was the walman. In the 90s it was the discman. Now its the Ipod. Ten years from now its going to be something else. And meanwhile no one is really loosing their hearing.
- SarahC, on 10/14/2008, -0/+4"Death of Metal"
