18 Ways to Stay Focused at Work
davecheong.com — So what are some of the things we can do to minimise such interruptions and distractions?
- 1358 diggs
- digg it
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+143It's already failed... I'm reading the article...
- flernk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+53This is the definition of irony.
- WarpFox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+50It should just say "stop reading digg"
- llbbl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11surf digg less?
- WarpFox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Lol, wait, it does say that. My bad.
- Jakyll, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13@WarpFox:
Agreed, stay away from Digg. - Nukem945, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree!! If we were following these guidelines in the first place, then we wouldn't have found and dugg it so quickly. But I guess the fact that we DID find suggests that we need the advice...
- fauxXenophanes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2think about homeless people
- Maku, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Doesn't work at work, maybe in school... Wait, nevermind.
- JeffT1545, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'm sorry I wasn't listening.
- Maku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Because you were reading?
- Antagonist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Huh? I can't hear you.
- JeffT1545, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Apparently my Lebowski reference is beyond some of you.
- kenelbow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Stay out of Malibu deadbeat!
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8/me hurls a coffee mug at JeffT1545's head
- sxtxixtxcxh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+141) unsubscribe diggs rss
- Tabris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2digg rss makes me excited everytime I see that little pop-up in the corner :( I only surf digg at work too, not at home lol. I'm horrible.
- JeffT1545, on 10/12/2007, -22/+1Oops. Mod this down
- DAlighieri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This brings up an interesting question (noted with humor by Jaymoon above)...
What percentage of people reading sites like digg or /. or what have you do so from work? Anyone know of any polls/studies that answer this? For an "out of my ass" guess, I'll go 60% (leaving a lot of room for students). Anyone else?- leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2digg seems busiest during the day, so that is plausible.
- Tabris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I never go on digg from home. Too busy playing Counter-Strike or out.
work=digg
- boiker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2good tips.. too bad I violated some of the rules by reading teh article... at work.
- taylorhayward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Forgot:
19. Don't play World of Warcraft until 3am and then wake up for work at 8am.
20. Drink less and sleep better.- DAlighieri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Well duh, you're just supposed to play WoW til 7 and then head straight to work! Trying to sleep for four hours is counter productive. ;)
- unrealJEDI, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6dont play World of Warcraft... ever.
- cody50, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Leeeeroy Jennnkinnnns.
- skabyss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If your having problems focusing at work that must mean that somebody else doesn't depend on your efforts.
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I found this article surprisingly helpful and written well. I think it gets a digg.
- rYno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+419. Don't play World of Warcraft until 3am and then wake up for work at 8am.
haha... that happens every sunday for some reason... - floorhead, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3http://www.duggmirror.com/health/18_Ways_to_Stay_Focused_at_Work/
- r0ck3tm4nn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I can attest to the water bottle tip. Staying hydrated even for a sedentary job makes a pretty big difference. Kinda feel like I have more energy without having to drink coffee. Just get a nalgene bottle or something similar.
- cube17576, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I can't live without my bottle of water. I go through about a bottle every hour.
- cody50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4you must have to visit the restroom alot.
- rYno, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2here ya go BTW
http://www.duggmirror.com/health/18_Ways_to_Stay_Focused_at_Work/ - jsd8cc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"7. Listen to the right types of music."
I agree, I find that any of the Digitally Imported http://di.fm/ stations keep me focused...there's something about trance that keeps me diligent.- ippersiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks for the link. The music is rythmic that you tend to tune it out, yet know it's there.
- Psylo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Don't forget to smoke pot before going to work.
- Thompson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sitting with earplugs in your ears and only helping colleagues during predetermined time-slots sounds like a surefire of also not having the distraction of friends in the office!
- linuxlizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I don't know about anyone else, but I have Magical Headphones.
I can sit in my cube for hours without being bothered by coworkers. But within a few minutes of putting on my Magical Headphones and fire up some music, I'll have someone stop by. It's uncanny.
- linuxlizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I don't know about anyone else, but I have Magical Headphones.
- altjeringa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I focus just fine. I'm always focused on digg.
- Tsujigiri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nice list. One thing about #2 though; you have to be cautious that making up this rule for yourself won't be seen as presumptuous or self important. I would imagine that making enemies with it could be simple to do if you enforced it with the wrong overtones. Also make sure that it fits within the time frame of whatever it is that you do, i.e. this rule as an architect might be more sensible, but in a call center it will get you fired. That's the difference between year long projects and 10 minute long projects.
- jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4most important rule...
get enough sleep, so you aren't tired during the day - awhiteflame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2...wow. They suggested to use headphones but don't play music, just use them to filter out noise.
How dorky/weird are you going to look with noise-cancelling headphones on and a wire that just drops to the ground?- Parasocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4How dorky/weird are you going to look in your new 911 on the way to work because you actually get stuff done? :)
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They have to be plugged in to work, you know. Just don't play any music though it.
- leer317, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2By the time I'm finished step three, half my day will be gone... :'(
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1bury this comment
- Tabris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, I'll digg you up just because I can.
- JDelta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1God knows I try...
- ajb2015, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah number 17 is a big one. I can spend hours reading digg. I don't feel like my day is complete until I've scanned every new article of the day and selected the ones that interest me.
- real2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Indeed. I'm in university and I fail pretty much ever step. I end up talking for hours about pointless crap with friends =)
And now i'm reading this instead of doing physics assignments...
- real2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Indeed. I'm in university and I fail pretty much ever step. I end up talking for hours about pointless crap with friends =)
- jonstafari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2where's my STFU co-worker button? hmmmmm, even with noise-cancelling headphones I can still hear the 8am banter of "tom cruise this, ophrah that" -- someone help me!!!!
- mapkinase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I hear you.
- naughtymonkey69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice advice, now all those dumb reports won't get in my way when I work at getting to level 4 in Sonic the Hedgehog.
- Recluse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2heh I got in trouble at work for being on digg too much.
- Recluse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Write out a daily task list and plan your day. There’s nothing like a task list sitting next to you to keep you focused. When you have a list of the things you need to accomplish in a day, having that close to you constantly reminding you of what needs to be done is a great way of keeping on track."
Or a way to keep you constantly depressed throughout the day. - dygitaljoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1... and hidden #19 way to stay focused at work: Don't go to Digg.com :-X
- kellyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you are bored at work, change jobs even if it means taking a pay cut.
- ellenweber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well said and these points are also supported in current research about how to get the most from the human brain at work. a good read and discussion! Do you think this would also apply to small business owners and is there is difference in tactics you'd suggest for the kinds of careers represented?
- Loudog1, on 03/17/2008, -0/+0Some points are valid, but in my work environment hardly any of these work. I supervise a call center of about 48 reps. There are 2 other sups, and 4 leads. But with schedules it's very often that myself and 1 or 2 leads are tending to the needs of 40 people, taking sup calls, answering questions, averting the many instances of "crisis of the moment" daily. On top of this I must oversee all the metrics of the center, coach reps not meeting those metrics, motivate my sales team, coach them as well, etc, etc, etc. All this with reps constantly at my desk for help. We don't have offices, our desks are on the floor with the reps. Unfortunately there are no articles that give advice on how to remain focused in an environment like that. Maybe because no one has ever done it.
