(explanations for each are in the article) - robz0r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+64I used to eat a lot of Walnuts, then i stopped. I then became addicted to video games, lost my girl friend, my dog died @ 17 human years old, my parents got divorced and then i flunked out of college, now i work at a call center.
Lesson be learned:
I SHOULD HAVE KEPT EATING WALNUTS. - megaloid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32They also neglected garlic, a foolish omission.
- Y0tsuya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26Dude, you should write a country song.
- phatvolvo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Yeah, without garlic you might be bitten by a vampire and become undead...
which, by the way, != alive and healthy! - archer104, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Too easy. I need more of a challenge.
- archer104, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9If soy ever got the chance, it would eat you and everyone you care about.
- rossmcd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8You can get protein from beans, fish, soy, turkey, and nuts. (I personally eat all of those but soy on a regular basis). Why is it important to have meat?
Secondly, I agree that soil plays a role in nutritient content. So does which strain of a particular food is grown, and its time between harvest and consumption. And it is healthy to avoid pesticides (some produce absorbs more than others). An easy way to shop that usually satisfies all of these requirements is to buy food that is locally grown and certified organic.
There is one even bigger single thing that we can do to improve our nutrition. EAT MORE WHOLE FOODS. When foods are processed into refined sugars, oils, and bleached flour, practically all of the nutritional value is lost. Shifting your diet away from processed food and towards whole food (fruits, vegetables) is probably the single most effective thing you can do to improve nutrition. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8...salmon
- kwood, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16Beans, beans, the magical superfruit
- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Great article. I learned by trial and error that oatmeal results in the ability to not feel hungry for a long time. It allows me to skip lunch and work more. They don't tell you about this in these articles but take my word for it - it also makes you fart. And if anyone wants some extremely healthy yet tasty food, go to the asian market, get the 'monomon' fish sauce and some long green beans. Strain the fish sauce, boil everything, eat. Your butt will thank you later.
- LordSkywalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I eat none of those foods. Oh *****.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5avacados?
- nyx210, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I have food allergies and I'm allergic to about half of the things on the list. Does that mean I'm gonna die?
- ddxChrist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Considering the typical health articles that make it on digg, I was expecting something bogus. On the other hand, I found it quite informative. These are typically small foods that you can add to a balanced diet.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I'm going to put a handful of each of these into a blender and create a Super Life Potion and sell it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4NoTiG, are you trying to take farting away from us?
- 88Chevy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7does pumpkin in pie form count?

Sardines like many fish are very good for you and by eating the soft bones you gain the benefit of calcium.
MOst of the food listed i covered with chemicals in its growth stage. A lot of salmon is farm raised and is not as healthy for you as wild salmon. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4yes!

- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That makes sense - rotting foods in the intestines probably isn't the best thing overtime. I guess I will continue my search for the ideal breakfast that improves my productivity.
- bubba9999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3To the people who are eating anything you want and claim to be healthy: You're right. You can do that - for a while.
Give it a few years though. - pitchblackjava, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"To remedy this, traditionally all grains were prepared by fermenting and sprouting, which released the phytic acid and other nutrients...."
Good points, NoTiG. Many traditional grain-based cultures also dry-baked or pan-heated their grains, which also improved digestion. Raw food advocates don't like to hear that, but some of the longest living cultures heated their grains and legumes for hours before eating. - dziban303, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5rofl. All those are pretty minor bumps in life. But the call center? Inexcusable.
I'll keep walnuts in my diet for the rest of my life. Let this poor sap's experience be a lesson to everyone. - 0crabby0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You might want to be re-evaluated for your food allegies - since many people seem to lose many of these allergies as they age.
- NoTiG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3eating oatmeal and not feeling hungry afterwards doesn't necessarily mean that it's healthy. In a way it controls blood sugar because its a slow digesting carb... but fat is actually the ultimate sugar controller in this respect. The fact that it digests so slowly and keeps you full isn't entirely a good thing.. precisely because the reason it takes so long to digest is because it is hard to digest.. which can cause problems with your digestion. Farting can also be a sign of fermentation... of it fermenting in your digestive tract which is not what you want realy because you can damage your intestines over time, and the longer a food is generally in there and fermenting, the more alcohols, toxins, and other yeasts and bad things it can leave in your body. To remedy this, traditionally all grains were prepared by fermenting and sprouting, which released the phytic acid and other nutrients....
- dick-richardson, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7will it blend?

Garlic is awesome, but truth be told, very few people actually like to eat garlic (cooked or raw) but rather prefer to use a bit as a flavoring agent, which lowers its potential effectiveness no doubt. Try eating a cooked clove. It's not terrible, but definitely an acquired taste. - thurows, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think you mean.
Beans, Beans the musical food,
The More you eat, the more you toot,
The more you toot the better you feel,
So, eat beans for every meal. - funkspiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Blueberry is my favorite strain.
- dreadalus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I know *I* like to start the day with a brimming bowl of pond scum. Yum!
- furo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't think there's a magic bullet sort of regimen out there. I simply refuse to trudge through life eating any of the 8 items on the list that I do not like. I'd rather enjoy my steak and die a year or two sooner, thanks. If I'm getting bigger, that's my clue that I'm eating too much. If my energy level changes, I know I'm over-indulging in something bad... like caffeine or sugar. I'll never follow a "diet" or deprive myself just for the sake of doing so in order to be in line with the study-o-the-day. My weight has always been well controlled, and I know several people that continually change what they eat based on what the media or some website told them, and they always seem to be the ones going to the doctor, out with colds, fighting their weight, etc. Common sense is still the best diet of all... and yes, I do eat fast food and drink sugared soda... in moderation.
- megaloid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Jelfish:
Actually, I eat at least two crushed cloves a day with a splash of olive oil and several ounces of water. It's an acquired taste. However, since beginning this practice several months ago, I have not had a cold. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol that is my entire diet
minus the turkey, only on special occasion
and soy, cause soy is crap - ChzPlz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2and, don't forget, soy makes you gay.

:) - lswinney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is nothing more than an advertisement, paid for by the producers of the products listed. Don't let yourself get sucked in to this crap. There are a lot of other foods that are as nutritious or more nutritious than these listed, but were strangely left out. Follow the money.
- TheTardis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Soy? -- it's not so good for you.
http://www.drwong.us/ArchivedSoyPoison.html - dstz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Really I don't think this list is accurate or useful. In fact apart for using the term "superfood" which must ring cool to some ears (the kind of people that drive hummers I guess), I am prety sure that with a minimum interest for the subject you could find dozens of other food items that woud have to be in that list.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know, guys, fish and turkey ARE meat...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2fish is on the list, and liver is not "meat."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Green Face: If it's green, or has a face (fish, meat, poultry), it's good for you."
what a coincidence... your ass has both, does that meen your ass is a superfood? - Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@phatvolvo
"Yeah, without garlic you might be bitten by a vampire and become undead...
which, by the way, != alive and healthy!"
Have you ever seen a sick vampire? or barring a wooden stake, have you seen one that was even slightly oh the out an outs?
Wouldn't living forever, kinda solve the problem you have with the nead to eat these superfoods? I mean, being alive would equate to immoratality which is essentially what vampires have! - jwjedi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Um, yeah, I think I'm going to have to bury this list as being inaccurate. I think we all know that bacon is THE "Superfood"!
I love you bacon. - TonyTheTerrible, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2great post, very informative!
- encognito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What I ate today
6 oz of blueberries, raspberries and blackberries
1 cup of OJ
1 cup of soymilk
1 oz of walnuts
2 oz of All-Bran
2 slices 9-grain sourdough bread
3 oz pastrami
2 slices provolone cheese
butter lettuce
half a tomato
3 oz carrots
Hummus (garbanzo beans and olive oil)
mustard
ketchup
vitamins
aspirin
64 oz of water
7 out of 14 w/o breaking a sweat. Although, I give a thumbs down to yogurt. I also agree with furo, there is no magic bullet. Oh yeah, death to food nazis everywhere whether they hail from the rabid, holier-than-thou vegan/vegetarian camp or the lard-ass, I got perpetual diarrhea but I can't stop eating this processed crap but I reserve the right to bug you about what you eat people. I hate the latter group most of all because around this time they are always miserable about their ***** weight yet simultaneously in denial about the sad state of their health. This makes them passive-aggressive with anyone who is healthy who can afford to eat chocolate around them. Don't ask me how I lost weight and kept it off and then bitch, moan and nitpick with me when I try to explain my process to you. Just STFU and go join your fellow herd at [insert fast food place here] - jerr0328, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Soylent Green! Thats all we need!
Oh wait, it's made of people! - SgtBeavis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I grew up not liking broccoli but I found that I just don't like it cooked. Raw broccoli (in salad for instance) is actually quite tasty.
Decent list IMO. Not perfect but not a bad foundation to start a decent diet. It sure is better than what 90% of my fellow Americans are currently eating in our diets. - miguel077, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Superfoods??" that name is ridiculous. Humans have been eating this for thousands of years, maybe we should just call "Crapfoods" the new stuff.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they forgot to mention avocado
it tastes good in a shake and its super healthy -
