- alanocu, on 03/19/2008, -0/+25Aside from being another list on how to transform your life in ten easy steps, a little more simplicity and mindfulness, in my experience, can bring some peace and calm in life, which this article does a nice job of explaining.
- inactive, on 03/19/2008, -3/+21Dugg for the first proper use of the word "Zen" in the history of Digg.
- Sporky023, on 03/19/2008, -0/+15When you multitask, just multitask
- Nightcrawler12, on 03/19/2008, -0/+14A Zen buddhist would probably enjoy this joke
- fluxingtontheIV, on 03/19/2008, -1/+151. Do one thing at a time.
Right now I have 6 tabs open up on firefox :( I guess neither me nor firefox is very zen - dondara, on 03/19/2008, -0/+13Turn your mind away from things which are not permanent. - Buddha
- Sporky023, on 03/19/2008, -2/+14I knew it was coming. I practice Zen and I could make you my bitch. My life is more full and interesting because my perception is clear. My beer tastes better, the resulting drunkenness is more enjoyable, sex is better and lasts longer, and the cigarette afterwards is better. Too bad your uncontemplated life isn't worth living, bro.
Have fun with your cheetos - megaton, on 03/19/2008, -0/+11Don't you mean, "12 Essential Hacks..."?
*thankful they stopped that madness* - insomniacal, on 03/19/2008, -0/+11Of course I'm ignoring that advice by surfing Digg and reading an article about Zen habits while I'm at work. Oops.
- psychotron, on 03/19/2008, -0/+10Does that mean I shouldn't take a bath and jack off at the same time?
- moletimer, on 03/19/2008, -1/+9Basically, live life simply, calmly, and at a slow, easy pace. In our modern world where everything is rushed and fast, these steps are very helpful. Great article, thanks : )
- dondara, on 03/19/2008, -0/+8"I could crush your gay face in" Another internet tough guy and an expert on "gay" also. Wow, you're a ***** winner
- drmitchell, on 03/19/2008, -0/+7clearly you don't know a thing about buddhists.
- Berkana, on 03/19/2008, -4/+101) shave yourself bald
2) wear a drab colored robe
3) go vegetarian
4) become celibate
5) meditate on mysterious riddles
6) maintain nicely groomed rock gardens.
7) ???
8) enlightenment! - theOster, on 03/19/2008, -0/+7"i zen'd her brains out last night"
- sparql, on 03/19/2008, -0/+7I would prefer an article on how to live like Zen The Intergalactic Ninja
- BufordT, on 03/19/2008, -1/+81. Don't trouble yourselves with compact lists of advice on how to live your life.
- JRW5061, on 03/19/2008, -0/+6They're all my favorite
- danarama, on 03/19/2008, -0/+6well that's a very zen thing to say, nevermind the monk he's not you. but there's nothing wrong with learning from them and making a point about it for regular lifestyles.
- Nightcrawler12, on 03/19/2008, -0/+5one of my tabs is the Wikipedia page on Zen Buddhism. Does that make it okay?
- JustFender, on 03/19/2008, -0/+4right understanding, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration
- aaabatteries, on 03/19/2008, -1/+5matter and energy cannot be destroyed.
- CoolWind, on 03/19/2008, -3/+7The author wants to transform other activities so that they take the place of meditation (like running, cleaning), but they cannot. Meditation is the basis of the simple life, not the other way around. If you meditate, your life will become more simple, because it will become apparent to you that your current life style is hectic and crazy and unhealthy, and you do a lot of things that are not in your best interests. You don't need to be concerned about how Zen monks live, because their world is not your world.
- TheGreatSeal, on 03/19/2008, -1/+5I find your lack of faith disturbing.
- Daiken, on 03/19/2008, -0/+4One question. Why would I want to live like a zen monk? I'm pretty happy as I am now.
- expatcatalyst, on 03/19/2008, -0/+4Go back and read again, I think you are missing the whole point. Also, read Thich Nhat Hanh's "The Miracle of Mindefulness". The whole point is to make life a moving meditation. It's a simple, short book that even a middle class, commutes 96 miles each way, very busy and responsible guy with 2 kids found time to read.
- Berkana, on 03/19/2008, -1/+4Not if one of the tenets of Buddhism is the forsaking of worldly goods.
- ninsei, on 03/19/2008, -0/+3no, hippies have long hair silly!
- bigmike7, on 03/19/2008, -0/+3No. The bath and the jack off are the same.
- BOFH2, on 03/19/2008, -2/+5The question I have is this: Are there Zen monks who are stressed by this lifestyle? I mean, if I were to do this I would find that my days would seem to take forever. I know that eventually you either adapt or leave that lifestyle but could there be Zen monks out there who go postal?
- heypetray, on 03/19/2008, -0/+2From my experience, Zen Buddhists enjoy just about everything in life.
(Okay, maybe not bungie jumping) - hierophantus, on 03/19/2008, -0/+21) Learn how to spell before you give advice *on spelling.
There you go. Although people will perceive properly spelled, punctuated, etc., advice as more authoritative, that isn't necessarily accurate. There are lot of wise people who can't spell every single word correctly in their advice, which remains much more useful than the most orthographically correct pablum. The only deal-breaker would be badly spelled spelling advice. - theOster, on 03/19/2008, -1/+3except for number 2:
Do it slowly and deliberately. You can do one task at a time, but also rush that task.
apparently this rule doesn't apply to proofing - lukemandese, on 03/19/2008, -0/+29) Profit!
- bitcloud, on 03/19/2008, -0/+2as long as the one thing you're doing is "browsing"
- MWeather, on 03/19/2008, -0/+2Are you scrubbing with one hand and rubbing with the other? If not you're just spanking it in a tub of water.
- Ascus, on 03/19/2008, -0/+2Plagiarism of what? Im interested in reading the original.
- eneve, on 03/19/2008, -5/+7#1 Do one thing at a time. When you’re pouring water, just pour water. When you’re eating, just eat. When browsing for porn, just browse for porn.
- expatcatalyst, on 03/19/2008, -0/+2“Smile, breathe and go slowly.”
- heypetray, on 03/19/2008, -0/+2nor ideas, ethics, and philosophies
- inactive, on 03/20/2008, -0/+2Although if we were all zen monks, its sounds like nothing would get done.
- heypetray, on 03/19/2008, -0/+2So what you are saying is that your responsibility to your superiors/coworkers is more important than your responsibility to yourself. Just playing devil's advocate here. What must be done, gets done. What should get done, doesn't. There is really no excuse to not live by this advice, for we have just as much time in one day as a zen monk, and they survive in happiness.
My point is:
Fear of not having a paycheck is what drives our entire western civilization. - expatcatalyst, on 03/19/2008, -0/+2This is stuff that has been written about for eons in the east. One of the best and fairly recent/understandable is "The Miracle of Mindfulness" by Thich Nhat Hanh I think you will enjoy this. Literally turned my life around years ago.
- BOFH2, on 03/20/2008, -0/+2You are really going to piss off the lefties.
- nikstr, on 03/19/2008, -1/+3“Smile, breathe and go slowly.”
Says it all right there. - heypetray, on 03/19/2008, -0/+2Maybe your job is unnecessary.
- PurpleDee, on 03/19/2008, -2/+4I wish I had a favourite Zen monk.
- inactive, on 03/19/2008, -0/+1http://digg.com/search?section=all&s=zen
- heypetray, on 03/19/2008, -0/+1I've never seen a Zen monk play Grateful Dead, either.
- trollick, on 03/19/2008, -3/+4Why the ***** would anybody want to live like a zen monk??????
