- vraa, on 10/10/2007, -0/+37A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 mph. The rear differential locks up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one.
- Puppetfunk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22I hope your booth feet heal quick.
- dview, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19Why are these flip flops still being sold, actually? Eleven of these cases would make a convincing point, right?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16If it was a chemical burn, the doctors would be able to "identify" why. It is an allergic reaction. Otherwise, there wouldn't be 11 reorted cases. There would be 11 THOUSAND reported cases.
- rnreekez, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12i think "Chemical Burnt" is a band...hence the capitalization
....or they typed this in a hurry since them's feet was burn'n - Aviatrixt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Bad grammar makes me [sic].
- BobbyMC, on 07/21/2008, -2/+11Kudos? This is Digg. Anyone who doesn't know what that paragraph is from a mile away isn't even welcome here.
- Reziarfg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Kudos to anyone who gets the reference.
- tunapez, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I bought a pair on a roadtrip once, within an hour I had sores/blisters between my toes. Guess what I did:
A: Drove back to the store to get my $2 refund?
B: Kept wearing them to see if it would get better
C: Called my lawyer
D: Threw them in the trash, counting it as an inexpensive life lesson to stay out of Wallyworld(s).
It was D. Here's the simple solution: STOP WEARING THEM!!!! - dawg109, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I am sure they were made in China.........
- cfazzini, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10Does it bother anyone else when people incorrectly use the plural Wal-Marts instead of singular Wal-Mart.
Them: "I bought it at wal-marts"
Me: "WTF? You bought it at more then one?" - PhoneGuy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6They were flip flops for petes sake.
As far as I am concerned ... anyone who wears flip flops deserves something bad happening to them. They are a blemish on an otherwise civilized society. - iDigDigg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Holy *****!
http://www.lamanaphotography.com/walmart.htm
Look at the pictures. That's disgusting. - archimago42, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Did anyone actually read what this is referencing? The person kept repeatedly wearing the sandals causing the problem and then they go fishing around for a doctor to say it is a chemical burn. How could this have possibly made it to the front page? Oh wait, no one who dugg it read it.
- Piedramente, on 10/10/2007, -8/+12So? More than 11 people have allergic reactions to virtually everything out there.
That does not mean the product is in any way defective. If you are allergic to a product, don't ***** wear it!!! - GawtMilk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You tried to sound smart and corrected him with "both", didn't you?
- jhbradl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4If something starts to irritate my skin I usually stop wearing it, but if you continue to wear it just to prove a point you are an idiot. I dont think plastic is going to cause a problem with your skin unless you have a crazy allergy to it.
- samdu, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6It bugs me, too. But you really should get your own grammar in order when you post something like this. Hint: "than, not then."
- chrispen, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Am I the only person that gets annoyed when people call Wal-Mart "Walmarts", why do they have to add that s onto the end?
- pogfreak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Ok sir, then what is the solution to this evil free market capitalism? Are you really calling for the government to regulate the $5 flipflop industry?
- nkassi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3*****,
That might explain some of the skin problem I have been having with my one foot. Throwing these crap 5$ wal-mart flip flops away. I must admit that my dad often has issues with his skin such as cuts that take a long time to close and heal but I've never had that problem until my foot started having bumps and such.
I thought they were fire ants bites which might be it but I keep getting them in the same place. - iDigDigg, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Holy *****!

Look at the pictures. That's disgusting. - dasdef, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3if you get the reference, dont talk about it.
- RobotCitizen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Perhaps the flipflops contain chinatoxins?
- HOOKSTER1231, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3A major one.
- orp2000, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Who said this was an allergic reaction? Or are you just a Walmart apologist? If your theory were true we would have people having similar reactions to other flip flop brands would we not. To date, I have seen no such reports. To borrow your, rather arrogant, vernacular, if you have a brain ****** use it!!!
- draegloth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Which car manufacturer do you work for?
- Piedramente, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Some people who eat peanuts have severe reactions! Are we to blame the peanut and call it defective simply because someone allergic to it ate it anyway?
Nice try. - Jeebugorn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2if you are going to make fun of someone's bad grammar....perhaps you should use some correct grammar yourself. its "than" not "then".
- rushfan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3This article looks like it was written by a sixth grader.
"I long suspected the Flip Flops threw one away in 2005 and bought a Fresh one (for the Beach) thinking that I might have developed a "Fungus." ... He prescribed gave me a very expensive cream for dry skin and said the Dry skin might be hereditary."
What? If you're going to write a blog and have it published on digg, at least proofread it. And I don't understand why random words in the sentences start with capitals. - rushfan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I agree with you. It's horribly written and offers no evidence. As a matter of fact, I used to suffer from the same symptoms she describes on my feet. It was caused by a genetic disorder (surprise). This was when I was a young child and my doctor gave me medicine (an expensive cream) for it and eventually it cleared up.
- strum40, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Things like this are the reason I don't step within two feet of wal-mart. Let's just hope people don't make a rash decision and try to sue. It doesn't work going toe to toe with them in court. What did people expect? Wal-Mart always has hot sales.
- shpider, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The only reason someone would continue wearing something (in this case flip flips) if it caused an allergic reaction (or chemical burn) is because of the sound of "cha-ching" that just echoed through their otherwise empty heads.
- GawtMilk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Chemical Burn? You serious?
It would be correctly written in a sentance as, "chemical burn". - 69Liters, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23 words: MADE IN CHINA.
- bjwest, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2So out of the millions of flipflops manufactured, only these 22 were manufactured with this harmful chemical? Now if it were thousands of people effected, then I could see, maybe, it was a harmful chemical that was just present more in these specific products, but 11? No, I think it's an allergic reaction to a chemical not present in many products. Most likely something unique to the particular rubber/plastic formula used in the flipflops, not widely used before.
- salinemist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"chinatoxins"
Know it, love it, spread it. - pogfreak, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2LOL ITS SO EASY! Just make a law!
- nkassi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Actually, I should keep them in case I need to show them to the doc.
- Rustbelt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Stupid Chinese crap.
- gl77, on 03/31/2008, -0/+1well, if it is the flip flops, they are still selling them, saw a pair 2 days ago in wal-mart(s)
- openyoureyes17, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1why are you getting dugg down??
- Metman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This case does not seem to match the symptoms of the other 10 cases. Not saying that it is not the flip-flops, but it sounds more like something different. The condition described if fairly common in women over the age of 45 - we used to get quite a few of these cases in the emergency room when I worked at the hospital. Some severe enough that they bleed extensively or become terribly infected.
- vraa, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Sure, if that's larger than the trade deficit we have against China. Are you sure you want your country's future invested by a foreign nation with a completely philosophically immoral government?
- ZenMojo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Heh, I was at a summer camp (prison) and the only "vacation" we had was trips to Wal-Mart. Every girl at camp had jacked up feet (one in particular had the black "chemical burn" markings on the bottom of her foot even though her flip-flops were pink) from wearing flip-flops which were probably all bought from Wal-Mart. This article is enlightening.
- monsieurgrand02, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This lady has very poor grammar...but besides that the first comment to the consumerist article makes a very good point. She should stop trying to look for a specialist who can giver the answer she's looking for and stick to being treated by one doctor. It's like she's looking for someone to tell her "You have chemical burns from flips flops purchased at Wal-Mart." Just another greedy person looking for a reason to sue...
- psygnisfive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Was that a prediction of what would happen to your comment?
- crashingechelon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Makes me feel kinda glad that I shell out 15-20 bucks for leather flipflops.
- JohnnyXmas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1They haven't pulled them because 11 cases out of the 11 million+ of those they've probably sold is not even a drop in the bucket. See the top comment from Fight Club. It's actually true.
