A friend of mine has a medical background, so she often goes with her parents to doctor's visits - in order to help explain the situation(s) and help improve the communication between both parties.

... Oh, wrong kind of Doctor. - DanThePainter, on 05/17/2008, -0/+8The article omitted the guide to prescription shorthand. A guide appears at the end of this page: http://www.fda.gov/fdac/features/695_prescrip.html
- Nomadelle, on 05/17/2008, -0/+7I try to be as honest as I can during my check ups, but I don't really want to let my doc know about all my bad habits! I guess they can see through all my... "fudged claims" :-/
- SmokenJoe, on 05/17/2008, -0/+7As one of those battle hardened nurses I must say nearly all that was said in the article is very true! Noting worth having comes for free.
Help us help you. Nice only goes so far. Do you want your doctor or nurse to kiss your ass or save it. Few people want to be honest with themselves enough for us to get a good diagnosis and treat them properly. If we dont know the real problem we can't fix it. Nurses and Doctors are no different when they are sick it is just human nature.
One comment stands out the nurse saying : "Well, to be honest, Dr. Addison is a complete jerk and everybody hates him, but if you're in serious trouble, there's nobody better."
The funny thing many of those "Jerks" are usually the most caring of all. It isn't easy trying to save someones after they have put off treatment until they were on deaths door. I have lost count of the 20-30 year old people that I have seen die in just the last 3 months because they did not get treated soon enough or who would not follow basic medical advice. - nienhulm, on 05/18/2008, -0/+3List me one diet that's been shown to cure cancer and AIDS.
BTW, wasn't ephedra, a natural supplement, banned a few years back for having the unfortunate side effect of death? - timbro1, on 05/17/2008, -0/+3Rule #1 only feel their ***** when their unconscious

- purpledoc, on 05/18/2008, -0/+3What a funny man. Rather than listing hundreds of therapeutics that work, I can only say that I hope you never get sick enough to need more than chicken soup.
- nascentia, on 05/17/2008, -0/+3They definitely can. I work a doctor and see his reactions quite often. He's amazingly perceptive, and can tell immediately what someone is lying about, exaggerating, downplaying, etc.
If someone is trying to lie about an injury, say to try for a lawsuit settlement, you wouldn't believe how easy it is for a doctor to tear it apart. You might think you're fooling him, but you're not.
Just an example, I recently hurt my back, and one day it was especially painful. I was walking around the office, hadn't mentioned it to my boss, and he asked if I was having lower back problems - my hip movement when I walked was slightly irregular, and he picked it right up.
Amazing what a good doctor notices. - inactive, on 05/18/2008, -0/+2 Many diseases are the result of lack of nutrition, and not lack of "medical cures". Eating a better nutritional diet eases the quality of life and the pocket book better than taking ***** that will kill your liver and kidneys..
- AnonBuffalo, on 05/18/2008, -0/+2I agree with this list 100%. I work in a pharmacy as a pharmacy intern. It always surprises me how little someone who has a chronic illness actually does to help themselves. They just want a "magic pill" to treat them as they continue to lead the same lifestyle that led to them having hypertension / dyslipidemia / diabetes in the first place.
Some people really need to take a more active role in their health, rather than just getting their monthly medication filled 2 months late and then complaining when their disease progresses. - tiedyeman, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2Yeah, you are right! Medicine totally should be a one way street. I don't want to take any initiative in ensuring my health. I like to think of myself as a planet, let say... the sun, with several other planets revolving around me (ie doctors, nurses, pharmaceutical companies, etc). I just want to walk into the hospital, get fixed up with whatever surgery or drugs they happen to be offering at the time and then never think about it again. Sheesh.
- DrDigg, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2Excellent suggestion. Definitely should be on the list.
- voxtarri, on 05/17/2008, -0/+2Now I am going to have to lie to my doctor even more. I no longer exercise two times a week, I exercise two times a day. And that alcohol? What does that even mean?
- bossm4n, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1Doctors need lessons in running their office as much as they need medical training. Staffing their office with rude, ill-tempered nurses and making patients wait 1+ to be seen even though they have an appointment for a specific time is bad business and it needs to stop. I've seen the opposite and it can be done. Quit trying to cram too many patients into one day and give your nurses some training in manners and customer service.
- balibones, on 05/19/2008, -0/+1I run a recall website and can say after years of experience with this it is almost always the pharmacist that finds out first when a drug has been pulled off the market or people start complaining of side effects. So yes "Get to know your pharmacist" is good advice. Dugg.
- Rubab, on 05/17/2008, -2/+3interesting
- nienhulm, on 05/18/2008, -1/+2Many diseases can't be cured yet. In those cases, pharmaceuticals aren't meant to cure, they're meant to ease symptoms and improve quality of life.
- liuite, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1i am going to the tropics to go diving so I got prescription for (preventing) malaria. the doc didn't care what the cdc said and prescribed primaquine (cdc said primaquine shouldn't be prescribed unless a test for a certain deficiency is done)...called the clinic and the nurse said another doc suggested mefloquine...wrong answer, mefloquine has side effect similar to decompression sickness in divers...i asked for what CDC recommended, which is chloroquine. thank goodness for the internet so i can do my own research
- pyngthyngs, on 05/17/2008, -2/+2very useful information
- eryximachus, on 05/17/2008, -1/+11) Medical compensation from insurance companies is typically per visit, not by time. This adversely affects patient care as doctors have every incentive to maximize the number of patients at all costs, especially by overbooking.
2) Greed also results in low quality staff. If they paid their staff better, they would likely be happier. - inactive, on 05/18/2008, -2/+1LIST me ONE "THERAPEUTIC" that has a consistent record to cure CANCER, AIDS, DIABETES, and HEART DISEASE? You can't name a single one. Pharmaceutical trash have all sorts of negative side effects, while natural health through diet, exercise ,herbal supplementation have ZERO negative side effects, and actually Work.
- inactive, on 05/18/2008, -3/+2All that knowledge doesn't mean ***** if you can't produce results. Namely, HEAL and CURE the disease instead of masking the symptoms. All the mainstream doctors know is how to prescribe pharmaceutical toxic crap that destroys the liver and mask the problem. The science and studies by scientists have already produced results and cures of chronic common diseases in the form of nutrition. Maybe you should go read a book on nutrition written by the many M.D.s and Ph.D.s that's not influenced by Big Pharma.
- robotto, on 05/17/2008, -3/+1Yeah this is an advertisement for their book. Good job for submitting to Digg.
/sarcasm - crimsonblade53, on 05/17/2008, -3/+0This article bothered me almost as much as the one giving customers advice for shopping at game stop and how to receive good service. This kind of practice should be inherent in any industry, and most of all the medical industry. I shouldn't have to follow a list to get quality healthcare.
- inactive, on 05/17/2008, -8/+2PHaramcists don't know *****, just like Allopathic doctors. Theyonly know what garbage poison pharmaceutical synthetic drug to give. They've wasted their entire life learning some ***** knowledge used to make the Pharmaceutical INdustrial Complex rich. Want some REAL advice on healing? go to your local Nutritionist.
- dorble, on 05/17/2008, -8/+0Wow this has opened my eyes! Who needs health insurance when America is so free and giving?! When I'm sick ill just head over to CVS from now on lol.
