Down pat. It's the others I have problems with - Almightymole, on 10/12/2009, -1/+59My wrist muscles are ***** bulging man.
- bobsbones, on 10/12/2009, -3/+60Work like an ant, eat like an horse, sleep like a baby. Grow like a weed.
- Tunguska, on 10/12/2009, -2/+51Not totally true.
You can gain muscle from eating bad food, but with it a nice layer of fat. - Forklore, on 10/12/2009, -0/+37So what your saying is you didn't read the article...
- MonkeyNews, on 10/12/2009, -9/+38That's nice, but Men's Health is probably the ***** guide to muscle building out there. Any magazine that tells me to do dumbell presses while balancing on a big ball can ***** off.
- Gioware, on 10/12/2009, -5/+31what about masturbation?
- randall814, on 10/12/2009, -3/+26It's not an American trait. It's a "dudebro" trait.
While we're on the subject of national stereotypes, you are probably in good shape because of your footy and what not, but I hope I don't ever meet you during my few years here in the UK because your breath is probably the equivalent of a Cambridge taxi after a night of hard drinking, and your teeth probably look like broken plastic forks from Pizza Hut.
That's not fair, now is it? - kirakun, on 10/12/2009, -0/+22I thought I just had to upgrade my strength attribute as I improve my level, no?
- xk3t, on 10/12/2009, -2/+23I don't know about you, but I haven't seen many ripped laborers.
- LacanX, on 10/12/2009, -2/+23If (Salary of Job now - Salary of Laboror) > Cost of Gym membership, then i think your plan is a little flawed....
- burRIDERton, on 10/12/2009, -3/+22Get off the couch.
...Maybe later. - inevitablity, on 10/12/2009, -0/+19well you still have to workout, and you would still have to follow a lot of these steps, but yes you will gain a lot more muscle.
- smitas, on 10/12/2009, -15/+33Muscles can be gained only by healthy food habits and right exercise.
- oda1, on 10/12/2009, -0/+18that's specific, in the category of "wrist muscles"
- daakone, on 10/12/2009, -5/+20You could also do the professional athlete thang and squirt yourself full of roids.
- VinceIP, on 10/12/2009, -2/+17I'll just stay inside and browse Digg.

- vilago, on 10/12/2009, -0/+13but can you give reach arounds?
- stjoad, on 10/12/2009, -1/+11Calories in > calories out = weight gain. The composition of that weight (fat vs. muscle) depends on how "well" you eat and the exercise you get.
- vassoom, on 10/12/2009, -2/+12The shake thing is actually pretty important...don't overlook it as a gimmick. But you can buy protein powders and fresh fruit and blend them yourself...no need to buy off-the-shelf stuff unless you don't want to bother with all the mixing.
You need a rapid infusion of nutrients before/during and then after your lifting (in the 30 minute "window of opportunity" immediately afterward). Do some research on glycogen and cortisol to understand what your body tries to do when you stress the muscles with weight training, and the reason why things like sugars (believe it or not) are a very important step immediately after lifting. - nambio, on 10/12/2009, -2/+11Generally I would agree but having read the article I agree with most of what was written. Seems to be solid advice. (I've been lifting for 5 years)
- electrikfuzz050, on 10/12/2009, -2/+11I logged in to reply to this. You really shouldn't give advice unless you know what you're talking about.
Past a certain amount, protein is converted into glucose, which is stored as fat. You can eat 500g a day of protein, but if you only need 200, you're just going to be putting on extra fat. - frequentFlyer, on 10/12/2009, -0/+9Don't forget to drink lots of water, folks.
- subliminalurge, on 10/12/2009, -1/+10Yep, this particular article was right on the money.
As to the dumbbell presses on a ball thing... There is value to that, since keeping yourself balanced will engage a lot more muscles than lying on a solid bench. For someone who is just trying to lose some weight and tone up, it's a great idea. Still, if you're trying to pack on muscle mass, then you need to be lifting heavy enough weight that I don't think doing it on such an unstable platform is probably a very safe idea. - moliver21, on 10/12/2009, -1/+9Speaking from my own personal experience. I've lost 4 inches off my waist and 35 pounds doing the P90X program, and that was in less then 60 days. I haven't even finished my 90 days yet and I've had that kind of result. If you want a change, the P90X program does work and requires minimal and inexpensive equipment to do.
It's not an easy workout, but it's simple to do. If you're looking for something that has proven results, well then that's it. Hop on YouTube, check out Google, look at the results people have been getting, I did and it blew me away. You can usually find people selling the program on Craigslist for a decent price. - johnwayne1, on 10/12/2009, -3/+11Good info.
- syrups, on 10/12/2009, -0/+790% unless you want to be the constant victim of over training.
- r0cky666, on 10/12/2009, -0/+7... It has to be furious masturbation though!
- ComeOnNowReally, on 10/12/2009, -3/+10Get off Digg
- Someb0dy, on 10/12/2009, -3/+10One thing it forgot to mention that's probably the most important thing is to lift to your maximum.
If you can still lift for the same muscle group by the end of the workout, then you haven't gone hard enough.
No pain, no gain. - NowAndPresent, on 10/12/2009, -0/+6How about doing 100 push ups?
http://www.reddit.com/comments/6nz1k/got_six_weeks ...
(ignore that it's reddit; it's a legendary thread nevertheless) - kaptainchump, on 10/12/2009, -7/+13Eat food chocked with protein (chicken, fish, eggs, milk) and lift weights.
- electrikfuzz050, on 10/12/2009, -0/+6Buried for inaccuracy. Creatine does NOT build muscle. It keeps water in the muscle, allowing you to lift heavier weights, which allows you to break plateaus.
- heavyj1970, on 10/12/2009, -4/+9"healthy" is a relative word
- Bots, on 10/12/2009, -0/+5or just download the dvd's online and get yourself a pullup bar and other accessories.
- joeyc88, on 10/12/2009, -0/+4I've seen some of those P90X videos and they are pretty intense.
By following the workouts on those videos and sticking to the healthy eating will work perfectly.
I can see why people have such excellent results. - skyjis6, on 10/12/2009, -0/+4I was being facetious. And just so you know, Androstenedione is known to cause (female style) breast growth in men, and shrink the testicles. I don't think any man wants to replace his bird chest with a pair of A cup boobs
- raynar, on 10/12/2009, -1/+5p90x. You'll get toned fast. Its sold as a get ripped thing, but its only true if you're not really overweight.
- strongsad, on 10/12/2009, -0/+4you shouldn't drive, masturbate or operate heavy machinery while furious. It only leads to grievous bodily injury and sugary tears.
- xk3t, on 10/12/2009, -0/+4Hey, if it worked for Quagmire then it can work for us... right?
- momomathew, on 10/12/2009, -1/+5There are various ways to lift weights and you lift according to how you want to build muscle. I for one, have done the dumbell presses sitting on a big ball. It helps you strengthen your lower core muscles. I will do something along this line after I finish with a program of heavy weight/low rep exercises. You want to build muscle, continue to change your workout.
- Corr0sive, on 10/12/2009, -0/+3What if i dont wanna BULK up, just want to have more muscle definition, as well as the strength?
145- 5'11 and i dont wanna gain much more weight. - XTomTomX, on 10/12/2009, -0/+3True, but just be prepared to gain a HELL of a lot of water weight along with that during the "load" phase.
- GExMachina, on 10/12/2009, -0/+3You spend more time and you are more focused on staying balanced than actually trying to work the muscles that are primary for the movement. If you want to strengthen your core, there are better, more efficient ways to do it.
I find a lot of people who take the mindset of 'I don't want to get super huge, and if I do this on a squishy ball or with my feet in the air it makes my lack of strength less glaring'. It was a bitch to try to get this mentality of the clients I had, when I still had it in me to do personal training. - sobri, on 10/12/2009, -0/+3Google "cutting diet".
- GExMachina, on 10/12/2009, -0/+3Buried for bad advice.
Low reps are for strength. They coordinate muscle recruitment for lifts and put on strength.
Mid reps are a combination of muscle growth and strength.
Higher reps are muscle growth (nearing 12 reps). Any higher is for endurance, not necessarily muscle growth or strength. Growth can happen but if you are dealing with people are aren't newbies and can gain 10lbs eating dirt and curling a soup can then this tends to be the case. Then again there are always exceptions.
The majority of my experience is with powerlifting. But then again with size comes strength, and with strength comes size. It's just which one you want an emphasis on, and neither is for show.
On a side note, I am all for newbies over eating. I am tired of people calling themselves hard gainers when what they lack is an appetite and a taste for large quantities of good food. - Black6x, on 10/13/2009, -0/+2I generally avoid anything shown on an infomercial, but I tried P90x. It's just hard workouts, with a defined structure. That's what most people need. I'm in great shape, and it kicked my but from time to time.
The hardest workout in the set: Yoga. I actually dreaded that day. - Bamboolemur, on 10/12/2009, -1/+3They don't mention creatine supplements. Creatine has been studied for decades now and has proven to be safe and very effective for gaining muscle.
