- vcrmaster1, on 05/25/2009, -1/+26man do i need to quit
- bonerfide, on 05/25/2009, -0/+24I quit 4 months ago. The strange thing is 90% of the time you don't miss it at all. It's that 10% that's a bitch!
- godzillaWax, on 05/25/2009, -0/+19You understand that everyone that's ever tried to quit says the exact same ***** thing you did? "Yeah quitting isn't hard, I'm only just doing it now cause I'm bored".
The point of quitting is never doing it again. Try that and then come back and talk about how easy it is.
Any douche can give it up for a few weeks. - solmakou, on 05/25/2009, -2/+20You know how I deal with the stress of not smoking, I smoke. Works wonders.
- nickert0n, on 05/25/2009, -5/+21Good Article, I started quiting on Friday and there is some vital information in here.
I see a couple of comments in here like "Just do it!" and to that I say to most of you Digger's:
Just like Women, you don't know what the hell you are talking about. - Paranor01, on 05/25/2009, -3/+18Good article. Especially since I just started the quitting process.
- chickenloco, on 05/25/2009, -2/+16My grandfather, who is about 74, just quit after being diagnosed with moderate to severe COPD. Within a week, the difference is amazing. He is always happy, has tons of energy, and is now working around the house every day, which he could not do before.
- capnawesome, on 05/25/2009, -0/+14I'm not sure how much going through nicotine and caffeine withdrawal simultaneously would help..
- Coffeedemon, on 05/25/2009, -0/+10You've obviously never smoked. That fear mongering ***** does not work. It is too easy to rationalize your way around it.
- paterade724, on 05/25/2009, -1/+9That comment sucks
- kidgentry, on 05/25/2009, -4/+12why quit? Science has proven that their is a direct positive correlation between coolness and cigarette smoking.
- Niocan, on 05/25/2009, -1/+8Tip #1: Vaporize/Ingest Cannabis.
- zombie210, on 05/25/2009, -0/+6I found bouts of savage violence towards others helped my releive the stress but it might not work for everyone. ;)
- cran, on 05/25/2009, -0/+6"Just do it" is the only way.
- RaverGeek, on 05/25/2009, -0/+6What I found works for quitting (started when I was 10, smoked for 12 years, smoke free for about 5 1/2 now):
- Unsweetened 100% grapefruit juice - lots of it every day, provides vitamins and stimulation to your mouth/throat
- Lots of water when not drinking juice - flushes your system
- Black licorice altoids - these things slam your mouth with flavor and burn just enough in your mouth/throat to take your mind off the feeling of that sweet, sweet smoke going in
- Sometimes you just have to go outside and stand by smokers, get that second hand smoke. I try to do this once every week or two
- I had a good reason to quit, my now wife did not smoke and I was working on quitting just before I met her. This provided much more motivation
- Try not to drink, drinking makes you want to smoke and lowers your willpower to resist the tempation.
Every day I have the urge to smoke. I know that if I pick one up I will be hooked and it will probably take a good 6+ months to to get to the point where I would be able to quit again. - woofers07, on 05/25/2009, -1/+7masturbation.
- CbME, on 05/25/2009, -0/+5I've got almost 3 weeks now.... this is the second time I quit. The first time I made it 9 months. I would have to agree about the 10% of the time being a bitch....
It being my second go-around, I know what some of my weakpoints are so I am taking those into account....
a) I am no longer smoking weed (association with smoking)
b) avoiding excessive drinking and trying not to drink in bars
c) cut out caffeine and other sugar drinks (only water and milk)
d) trying to exercise on a regular basis
These steps have helped make it easier but everyday is still a new adventure.... - wezman2k, on 05/25/2009, -0/+5yeup...for me it's usually when i run into those "triggers", i.e. long drives, after meals, alcohol, etc.
just gotta ignore it and do something else. - shawnfromnh, on 05/25/2009, -0/+5I just quit a 3 pack a day habit just a month ago and the advice to quit caffeine is just plain no a bright move. As anyone who is around regular coffee drinkers knows, don't bother them before they get their first cup into them. Now combine that with nicotine withdrawal and you have a walking psychotic. Just plain foolish advice. Just control your vices one at a time, it's just so much easier.
- JustinHopewell, on 05/25/2009, -0/+5I smoke more cigarettes on weed/alcohol than when I'm sober.
- ba5e, on 05/25/2009, -0/+5I quit cold turkey about 11 months ago after being a heavy smoker for 10 years. I do miss it but get by, like the majority of the population without it.
- zdiggler, on 05/25/2009, -1/+6digg sucks!
- chesstwin, on 05/25/2009, -1/+6Yeah, I love giving myself cancer in my spare time too.
- Coffeedemon, on 05/25/2009, -0/+53 weeks for me. I actually found the first two weeks easier than this current one but I think that is due to it being around the time when I usually relapse after "proving" something to myself by quitting for a couple of weeks.
- tastypastry, on 05/26/2009, -0/+4They're are right though. You have to just do it...after this last pack I swear.
- deadasdisco, on 05/25/2009, -0/+4life sucks more as a smoker. trust me.
- donedeal312, on 05/25/2009, -4/+8The will power method sucks, you have to understand why you're smoking..IF ANYONE REALLY WANTS TO QUIT, CHECK OUT "THE EASY WAY TO STOP SMOKING, BY ALLEN CARR.. (AMAZON) After hearing how ellen quit, I saw Ashton Kutcher on Leno and he quit by reading the book too...I tried hypnosis, will power, patches, etc..I was addicted. Or so I thought. Anyway I read the book and quit cold turkey with no withdraw. I was even drinking the next day with no withdraw or cravings!. Crazy.. Gave it to my friend for his birthday (doesnt really read books) (smoked 3 packs per day) Quit smoking with no withdraw. Its incredible! Again if you want to quit smoking check it out...Whats the worst that can happen? You read a book, and spend $10 (you can resell it right back on amazon. I wish anyone trying the best of luck. God speed! Google the book or read the amazon reviews..
- inactive, on 05/25/2009, -3/+7Hahha bad news that bitch was nuts long before she took those meds or quit.
- thefourcast, on 05/25/2009, -0/+4The biggest obstacle I come across when quitting is when I have about 5 drinks and someone else lights up, it's like a liposuction patient staring at a cupcake.
- davidw00t, on 05/25/2009, -0/+4Yeah...with that logic, if somebody falls down a well, we shouldn't help them up because they shouldn't have been playing near the well in the first place.
- redsoxmb545, on 05/25/2009, -7/+11Tip # 1: Smoke weed.
- tkeajax, on 05/25/2009, -0/+4I'm on the last stage of the patch. This is my third attempt. Last time I used Welbutrin. Those pills made me crazy. This time I have used the patch and St. John's wart. So far it's been great. I haven't wanted a cig yet. I'm still able to drink a few beers on the weekend without nicking out. St. John's wart works alot like Welbutrin just without the crazy side effects. Screw big Pharma and screw the Tobacco industry.
- zdiggler, on 05/25/2009, -0/+4he's posting his reaction on drug he was prescribed and he get dugg down.
no wonder I don't come visit digg any more.. just whole bunch of stupid people on here. - deadasdisco, on 05/25/2009, -0/+3i quit using the same book. it works, people! the real trick, after you've stopped smoking, is to NEVER smoke EVEN ONE more cigarette. EVER. there are NO benefits to smoking. NONE.
- VarelseSoul, on 05/25/2009, -0/+3My dad "just did it" after he was diagnosed with a stage 4 cancer and miraculously survived.
- RaverGeek, on 05/25/2009, -0/+3The first time I tried to quit I was put on Wellbutrin. It turned me into a complete raging *****. I would blow up at somebody just for asking how my day was. It stressed me out so much I would go have a smoke just to get away from people. I do not recommend this method.
- gherikill, on 05/25/2009, -0/+3+1 For Allen Carr, That is how I quit.
- deadasdisco, on 05/25/2009, -0/+3"I know that if I pick one up I will be hooked and it will probably take a good 6+ months to to get to the point where I would be able to quit again."
that is the perfect way to think. the quitting process is pretty tough, and if you just try and make yourself remember what you went through, it's good motivation. - hawk196, on 05/25/2009, -3/+6this article makes me want to smoke again after having quit a month ago
- zdiggler, on 05/25/2009, -0/+3Smoke both and beer at same time, extremely good feeling, better then just smoking weed.
- zdiggler, on 05/25/2009, -0/+3Personal Vaporizers E-Cigarettes are also good way to quit, because you can control the amount of nic you want.
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/
I got the 510 and its great.. not cig for 2 weeks now. - groberts1980, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3The hardest part isn't the first couple of weeks. I mean physically it is, but mentally the hardest part is the next few YEARS. Every time you see someone smoking a cigarette you will think about the fact that you used to smoke, and don't anymore. It's a mental thing. I quit for a year, and started smoking again for a month, and just now quit again. It's something you'll deal with for a long time.
- eatinshramps, on 05/25/2009, -3/+6Smoke more should be tip number 1.
- inactive, on 05/25/2009, -0/+2We all do eventually...
- farTart, on 05/25/2009, -0/+2Alternatively, stop smoking rather than quitting by using Allan Carr's Easyway to stop smoking book:
http://www.amazon.com/Easy-Way-Stop-Smoking-Non-Sm ... - kkei08, on 05/25/2009, -2/+4I was adamant about my now ex-girlfriend quitting smoking. She couldn't do it alone, so she got medication to help out. She had a negative reaction (Wellbutrin, it's the medicine she was prescribed which is also an antidepressant) and ended up in the psych ward for a week. Now she's a diagnosed bipolar and schizo, and the medication shes taking now makes her even more crazy.
tl;dr
Let your significant other smoke! There are worse things in the world, and one of them is all the stress he/she will go through for a few weeks every time he/she tries to quit! - Coffeedemon, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2This message has been endorsed by Joe Camel, MD.
- tastypastry, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2That is why I find it so hard to stop for me. It's not a problem for me to go a week but then I enjoy to drink and then it just feels so good to smoke one...pack.
- inactive, on 05/25/2009, -0/+2My advice - take a hike! Literally. I went mountain hiking with a group of non-smokers. The first 2-3 days of nicotine withdrawal were the most difficult, then the addiction began to fade away. After a week, I no longer needed cigarettes. I stayed nicotine-free for a couple of years until one day I had a few drinks too many, and decided to enjoy a cigarette.... To make a long story short, I quit a year later, cold turkey, that time at home and for good. Quitting the second time was easier because I knew I could do it. Since then I would not touch a cigarette with a 10-foot pole..
- groberts1980, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2Chantix is a miracle drug if you're one of the lucky ones not to be affected by it's reported side effects.
