- Cenobite, on 10/11/2007, -10/+136Early to rise, early to bed, makes a man healthy but socially dead.
- kerryhall, on 10/11/2007, -1/+52My alarm clock is all the way across the room. I have found that when it goes off, I will get up in my sleep, turn the alarm completely off, then go back to bed. I never remember doing it when I finally wake up. It's awesome when this happens on a day I have a final.
- GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+47You must be new here.
- flernk, on 11/05/2007, -3/+41My wife and I are night owls, but both our kids insist on getting up at 5:30 every single morning.
You can take your "early riser." It drives me batty. I wanna sleep in till noon. - jus1haz2, on 10/11/2007, -8/+44"Sunrise. People who wake late miss one of the greatest feats of nature, repeated in full stereovision each and every day — the rise of the sun. I love how the day slowly gets brighter, when the midnight blue turns to lighter blue, when the brilliant colors start to seep into the sky, when nature is painted in incredible colors. I like doing my early morning run during this time, and I look up at the sky as I run and say to the world, “What a glorious day!” Really. I really do that. Corny, I know."
Idk if you stay up until 5am then you can usually see it and still have time for eggs before you go to bed. - samuelcotterall, on 10/11/2007, -1/+36This guy must live on three hours sleep to fit in all these tasks.
Nice, inspiring, article though. I like the way he's like "in my experience" rather than "this is how it is" - a refreshing lack of arrogance. - Cerialthriller, on 11/05/2007, -8/+42WoW farming is better after midnight

- Misanthrope, on 10/11/2007, -0/+27OH! That gives me a great idea for a blog...
- Wisgary, on 10/11/2007, -0/+23Yeah, I've been guilty of this myself, I set my cellphone to have THREE alarms at 5 minute intervals, with snooze and wait ten minutes turned on so I get a total of 5 alarms (the first snooze and third alarm overlap) and I wake up hours later with no recollection of ever turning off all 5 of them, wtf.
- ahawks, on 10/11/2007, -1/+23You aren't adding 6 hours. You're shifting when you are asleep.
Don't expect to stay up til 1-2am and still get up at 4:30 or 5. You'll probably need to be in bed by 8 or 9 to get up that early.
Frankly, I like my relaxation time after work, not before it. I am a 10-6 worker, and usually get around to dinner at 9pm. Screw that morning ***** :) - wedesoft, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22Benefits of working at night
1. Greet the day
Before I finally go to bed I greet the sunrise and I feel wonderful about what I accomplished this night.
2. Amazing start
When I get up the sun is setting and the city lights are coming into life. I used to start my day shortly after sunrise and everything used to look depressing in the harsh sunlight.
3. Quietude
After midnight it gets really quite. This is my favorite time of the night. Later at 5 a.m. I make some job-related phone calls to inform my colleagues about the progress of work.
4. Sunset
People who go to bed early miss on one of the greatest feature of nature: The milky way. Seeing the galaxy makes me think about what an amazing place our universe is!
5. Breakfast
Rise in the late evening and you can go to the pub for breakfast. Invite your friends for a beer and enjoy the early night. Having a beer with my friends is definitely more fun than drinking coffee and having breakfast in front of the TV while every sane person is sleeping.
6. Exercise
I like to play tennis or football in the late evening. I makes me feel good when I bet all the guys who are tired from work.
7. Productivity
Late evenings for me are the most productive time of day. After an exiting night of accomplishments I use the early morning time when I'm tired for less important work like writing reports and making presentations.
8. Goal time
Most football games are broadcasted in the early evening. I especially enjoy goal time. Not only I can have beer and breakfast with my friends. I also can watch an exiting game of football and I enter my workplace with lots of high spirit.
9. Commute
For some reason I never had problems commuting. The traffic jam always seems to take place on the other side of the road.
10. Appointments
I usually make my appointments in the morning at 6 a.m after my phone calls. If someone does not want to meet you at 6 a.m. maybe it wasn't so important after all.
How to attain this lifestyle
* Don't make drastic changes
Just get some blinds for those windows. You will notice that the time of awaking will slip towards the optimal equilibrium just by itself.
* Allow yourself to sleep late
Maybe you used to feel guilty when getting up late and all this. But you shouldn't listen to what other people want you to believe. Let your body decide when it wants to wake up. Nature did make us tired in the morning for a reason!
* Put your alarm clock far from you bed
Put your alarm clock far from your bed and out of earshot. Every doctor will tell you that disrupting your natural sleeping period with this electronic noise-maker will sooner or later affect your health badly.
* Do not rationalize
Listen to your body. Don't tell yourself: "I have to get up at this or that time." Habitual people are afraid of changes and they need to plan their day by the clock. If you let go and start tuning in with your body, you will stop living in conflict with yourself.
* ...
I'd like to finish but I really need to go for breakfast before the pub closes.

The Top Ten pages that give you the Top Ten Lists of Top Ten lists. - progman445, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19I used to want to be an early person, but after doing it for a while I went right back to my usual 9:30 - 6:30 schedule.
No one is on the roads at 9 or 6:30, its such an easy commute. Plus, everyone starts to leave around 5 so I actually get more work done when no one is asking me about my TPS reports. - GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18All clocks can be defeated with judicial use of a sledgehammer.

- Brss45, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11i agree with you completely. the entire voice of this article is a non-threatening, presentation of his views.
i.e.:
"If you are a night owl, and that works for you, I think that ’s great. There’s no reason to change, especially if you’re happy with it." - ShugNinx21, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Some people are morning people, some are night owls.
I am a night owl. Getting up early, even with enough sleep, makes me cranky and it takes time for me to adjust and get my day started. If i wake a bit later in the day then I'm refreshed and ready to start my day without the crankiness. - samuelcotterall, on 10/11/2007, -5/+16By "workday" do you mean "Welfare" day?
- ahawks, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Digg already has a Top 10 list for the day. We just have to game the system so only top 10 lists are getting to the top :)

- truebullfan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10since school ended ive been sleeping at 4am and waking up at 1pm. I really want to change that.
- ShugNinx21, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12I thought it was Grape Drink?
- psykiv, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I am definitely a night owl.
I prefer working later on in the day. I have absolutely no problem with going to sleep at 5am working on a project, but the second I need to get up at 6am to do a project, we have a problem.
I find its a lot more peaceful to work later on in the day (especially between the hours of 11pm and about 4am, those seem to be my most productive hours). If I was to start working at say 8am, I won't be as productive.
Besides, it gives me more time in the day to do my daily errands. I never did quite understand why most businesses close at like 5 or 6. THATS WHEN EVERYONE ELSE IS AT WORK. - samk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8"My wife and I are night owls, but both our kids insist on getting up at 5:30 every single morning."
That's because you send your kids to bed too early. Let them stay up 'til 1 am. Problem solved. - Frozo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Sounds like the author has experienced some kind of "awakening" that might not have as much to do with getting up early as other factors may have contributed. Most of his comments make sense for a night dweller as well. Quiet time? Whos up bothering you at 1, 2, 3am? Commute is the last thing you need to worry about as a late waker. Breakfast isnt a morning meal, its yout FIRST meal, regarless of when you get up. Your body doesnt say "hey, why are you feeding me eggs at 2pm?!" if you just woke up--it doesnt know the difference!
I realize these are HIS personal points, and Im glad it works for HIM. - dick122, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8The way I trained myself to get up early every morning was by drinking a large glass of water just before hitting the bed every night. My bladder turned out to be way more dependable than the clock.
- trer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9If you rise early, how will you get your late night partying in?
And will this mean I'll miss fourthmeal? - GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Wow so you go to bed after sun rise and eat fast food for breakfast. Perhaps it's better you don't have kids ;).
- NurseZone, on 11/05/2007, -11/+18Getting up early just feels great. These are great tips.
- 7952, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6You have loads more time to right lists.
- GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6There needs to be a reason to get up. Perhaps watch live sport from the other side of the planet, whatever. Once you have a reason to get up it is much easier, if you try to get up for the sake of getting up you'll find that your awakening time will creep up.
I disagree with the article on how best to achieve the time. Often, depending on your discipline, it is better to simply stay awake until you are both tired and at the right time for sleep. A bad sleeping pattern is equivalent to jet lag. The military tend to use the method described above, deal with it in a day. The key is still having a reason to be up though, you'll find even the most pervasive of sleeping problems disappear when you need to sleep properly regularly. - weirddave, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6FTA: "I suggest going to bed earlier, even if you don’t think you’ll sleep, and read while in bed."
This is the opposite of the advice I've heard everywhere else. For most people, reading in bed can contribute to insomnia.
For example, from http://www.sleepdex.org/tips.htm :
"Don’t lie in bed awake. If you can’t fall asleep within 30 minutes, go to another room and do something restful until you feel tired. Don’t read in bed. If you want to read, get out of bed and sit in a chair." - kufurex, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5>> a refreshing lack of arrogance.
That's what happens when you wake up early. ;) - OneAndOnlySnob, on 10/11/2007, -10/+15"}}Take advantage of all that extra time.{{ Don’t wake up an hour or two early just to read your blogs, unless that’s a major goal of yours. Don’t wake up early and waste that }}extra time{{. Get a jump start on your day! I like to use that time to get a head start on preparing my kids’ lunches, on planning for the rest of the day (when I set my MITs), on exercising or meditating, and on reading. }}By the time 6:30 rolls around, I’ve done more than many people do the entire day.{{"
Look at me, I'm a morning person, I get soooo much work done with all my extra time!!
What is it with the neurosis of the early riser that makes him completely unable to comprehend that there are fixed number of hours in a day, and that you must sleep a certain number of them? It makes no difference when you go to bed. You're going to be sleeping for about 8 hours, and then you'll be awake for about 16 hours.
Hey Diggers, stop digging this "How To Get Up In The Morning" *****. If you want to do it, set your ***** alarm and get out of bed when it goes off. The End. - Nougat, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6@sspooner (#6870795)

must be nice....
No matter when I get in, work and meetings always go to 6:30 atleast, and I work online @ home 2-3 hours a night. I suppose if you are a button pusher though you can actually punch out early if you get in early. - mahdaeng, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3fta: "Get a jump start on your day!
