- Hassassin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8When you're addicted to porn there is never unlimited storage.
- b1sh0p, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This will be marketed under the 'porn master' brand. It also stores flesh tone data in jpg's and avi's more efficiently than standard drives, is waterproof, and can be installed with one hand.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4At least I'll finally be able to move my porn collection off of the 30 250gb EIDE drives that I've got going right now and stick them on a 15tb RAID+5 in a single box with three drives.
- mrgomel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"The file name length in unix is unlimited, where unlimited is set to 256 bytes."
- longofest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes. Because 5TB = Unlimited.
However, a freakin' 5TB drive is still freakin' sweet. Wonder when it will hit the streets, and what its access time will be like for such a packed drive. - conigs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"...aimed at the PC market."
As opposed to the cooking/baking market? - Syngensmyth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hitachi, good soon I will be able to lose 5TB of data and not just 80GB, when the drive dies.
- jodamiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2With tech, one should avoid saying things like "unlimited", "boundless", or "more than one will ever need". Because one day people will need more than 5 TBs of storage.
- scorpioX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bad title ("unlimited" - only 5TB?), but cool tech.
- Abyss_908, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12010? That's BS. With a decent raid array of 10 500GB harddrives you could have that space now. Which means it should be possible sooner.
- longofest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1from the article: due in 2010. I would rate this as "old news", but its really "too far in the future" news
- nihilator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where is the unlimited part?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"what its access time will be like for such a packed drive."
Not really relavant. Who would run their OS and games off of a 5tb drive? Stick to a 100gb high end SATA and you'd use these for storage of videos, music, photos and other archives and backups. - nads, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1is the latest hard drive thats "coming soon"? lol
- Celsius032, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15 years is a long time, this is probably gonna be another one of those things like u saw on TV as a kid in those "house of the future shows", that never happened
- MrDan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And I thought 64k would be enough for any man.
- Tracon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i agree with jodamiller. i can just see the story from the early 1990's Unlimited storage on your 1Gig drive.
- SamLachance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15TB isn't unlimited moron.
- Brightside, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I remember when I thought a 5 gb drive was basically "unlimited." I recall saying something similar to "Who would ever need that much storage?" Oops.
- aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no digg because of stupid title name
5TB IS NOT UNLIMITIED, you moron! - Crazy_8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"When you're addicted to porn there is never unlimited storage."
FIXED
"When you're addicted to Anime there is never unlimited storage."
Corrected again...Just say anything..not just pr0n and Anime
I have 6x 250GB SATA drives Raided to give me 1TB (6x250= 1.5TB - 500GB is missing for being 2x hot drives.) and I am sitting at about 100GB left. I seem to have filled 90% of it with Anime/Music/GameISOs/TVShows/Movies/Pictures...and even my pr0n.... - HiddenS3crets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Could you fill up 5TB? =P **unless your a pr0n addict =O
I'm curious to see the outcome of this project - aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am already busting at the seams with 4 Terabytes of space. Probably will be over six by april when the wedding season picks up again.
certainly not even close to "Unlimited" for someone does video thats for sure. (I havent even upgraded to HD yet!) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0how is that "unlimite" abeit thats fukin massive but no unlimited

(^_^)/(^_^)/ - kernel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seriously, I don't see why a normal user would need a 5 terabyte storage! I mean, 300GM is more then enough, not to forget that the more storage you use, the slower your PC will be.
I have got a AMD 64 and I got 160GB of storage, believe me I only used 50GB, and most of the space is occupied by movies :D
But, I think that 5 terabyte is useless, well according to me.
-Kernel - aa3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+05tb is not unlimited storage!
- sgtpinky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I remember when my mate got the first 1GB HDD for his 486. Games were spread on 4 3.5" disks at the time, and everyone sat around saying, "But what will you do with all that space??!".
5TB will be a pin prick of memory in the future. - wtfunkymonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, 5TB! That's so close to unlimited it's scary!
NO DIG! - Braamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nearing TWO DOZEN mentions of the subjective "Unlimited Storage" title of this article... Wow. If you see something that gets your panties in a bunch, take a second, and read as you scroll down the comments list , then, if you must be redundant, at least muster up the will to be creative about it.
- Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"with unlimited storage it can hold 8 million songs and every picture ever made"
Actually with unlimited storage you could hold a lot more than that! - danlin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0in 5 years, 5TB will not seem as much. i thought 80 gb was big in 2000. now a 300gb drive is not enough.
- Hattrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am a little disappointed with the content of this post. It is certain that drives will hold more and get smaller over the next few years (article states the obvious). The submitter should be admonished for the misleading title as well.
This is something worth reading:
http://www.computerworld.com/hardwaretopics/storage/story/0,10801,106288,00.html - ssaha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Wonder when it will hit the streets"
Wonder what $$$ tag it'll have. - vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll take one! I wonder if there will be a new interface released in that time though? SATA is fast but I can see people needing one of these for like backing up their entire DVD collection wanting to be able to watch them and run other applications as well. I bet that Hitachi will be marketing these drives to Enterprise users and people who run big servers first though.
Think of a world where all video is in HD and instead of playing it off a disc you access a server, then you see the need for drives like this. - beni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wish we could rate the submitter stupid but the story good. Like digg this one but start the next one out at negative diggs. Unlimited storage? What a joke. Tenfold improvement in hard disk capacity? Cool.
- firehydra2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Unlimited =! 5TB
But anyways, think of how much pron you can rip on that thing! - davdav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0:-) @ conigs
- Bamtang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But will it make you happier to have unlimited storage? You'd just accumulate more junk.
My iTunes is full of like 20 GB of music, no doubt paultry in comparison to many of my bretheren en these pages, but non the less I still have major maintenance issues. I switched ID3 tags a couple of times to keep compatability with various daft devices in the car, home and office. Finding, rating or maintaining this number of song files is a really tricky process. How on Earth could I maintain the single thread of sanity in my life if I had that much storage? Google Desktop search? Maybe version 6 will be combined with Picasa and image recognition software to sort the photos and movies that will fill the drive. Oh how we will laugh when it makes the mistake between my face and a horse`s arse and file my birthday photo with the farm shots.
We will have to expect that all of our data will be with us at all times, so maybe this drive would be in the central server that our families operate, meaning that there would be really just 1 TB per person in a 5 person house hold. Wow, that's a lot of comments for a completely crap blurb on something that could have been taken from a Moore's Law type progression chart... - roguepirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If they make it, we will fill it.
- snowboarder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"2010? That's BS. With a decent raid array of 10 500GB harddrives you could have that space now. Which means it should be possible sooner."
But 3.5 inches?? You idiot. - aa3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder how many more times people will comment that 5tb is not unlimited?
- tepster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0is this really so suprising that we will get this kind of storage space in 2010?? i didn't have to be an analyst to predict this.
- kiwimonk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0whys everyone trippin out? 5tb . single drive = GOOD
Thanks - theratdotus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0who would give a baby that thing? it is a choking hazard! oi vey!
- neenor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0okay so 5TB in 2010 on a 3.5" but when will I get a 100 GB + flash hardrive and my OS on EPROM.
Tell me that and I'll digg. - NeilM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very cool. :D
- Ace2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+04 people?
- modifiy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that doesnt seem all that big of a deal, 5 years down the road i would think that would be about the standard size hd in a computer. 5 years is a pretty long time thats nearly a tb a year. I would think thats an easy one to hit, but thats just me .
- CoffeeCup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I need that now! not in 5 years. One tape of a birthday, graduation or other event from my DV camera transfers to my computer and takes up roughly 15GB of space. I have a large box full of Mini-DV tapes that I would like to store on a hard drive, not to mention all the tv shows I want to watch and keep, have all my DVD's on demand stored on a local server in my house, and 8 megapixel pictures and games and software...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ahhaha 5TB, that's alot of Porn ;)
