More like...
"I'm full of myself and not impressed...screw you"
Digg has the BEST news out there edited by it's readers, and a good 99% of the "someone built some cool device" stories has some wag that just HAS to sound off because they did it before when they were 3 years old (which was just last week, in a lot of cases). +Digg, and +tar.feather sc173. - ChanEilFhios, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The fact that the payload is a camera doesn't make this less of a submarine does it?
- krische, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would have to agree with CorpT. How about instead of complaing about there being no plans, design some yourself. Better yet, read the whole story and you will find out that he is going to redesign it this winter. Think before you post.
- Ev1d3nc3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's times like this, and stories like this, that you realize that digg is the best place in the world.
+ Digg - diggbrian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you use Schedule 80 (dark gray) PVC instead of Schedule 40 (white)you could achieve greater depths. You may need to re-calculate buoyancy because Schedule 80 is thicker so the inside diameter is smaller than Schedule 40, but no biggy.
- DeepNarcosis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What I want to know is what is the depth rating for this ROV? If it can maintain a depth of 130'+ I'll take 10 of them for my shipwreck exploration!
- bhsx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Odwalla,
You the whole point that everyone else here saw, was the video. It's the first link on the page. This is also the same guy that built a "railgun" featured on /. a while back. He does some very cool things with his son, and I suppose his son is probably the main reason he's doing it (hands-on learning and all that). He just posts this stuff cause he knows other people would be interested in what he's up to, he doesn't need to self-promote his projects. - ThePikey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very cool. I'm sure there are a ton of improvements that could be made, and that this guy is probably planning on. But cool just the same. As for depth, I guess that would depend on the pressure rating of the PVC. I'm guessing you're not going to be exploring the Titanic with this thing. :)
- thedazman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Submarine or not. The thing is cool... too bad I'm in college and can't spend the time/money to make one!
- thatotherguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Heh, it's fun to watch the fish freak out in the vid.
Anyway, got me to thinking about it. Since I live on a lake, something similar to this, un-tethered with GPS and guidance junk, could be put on "missions" around the lake from its home base (my house). Simple, mundane things like auto-checking people's dock-footings or whatever. Or fun things like mapping the lakebed automatically. Hrm, I smell a project coming on. - aAnaRchY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cool. if you could post your plans i will be happier!

Question:
Do you digg a story before actually reading it?
"Some people will do ANYTHING to get to the front page." - anagy100, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would have like to see this actually working. with all that plastic and sealed pockets of air, i could only image that this floats on top of the water rather that under it.
- CorpT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did you click on any of the pictures, Od? Didn't think so.
I think this is great. No plans? That's half the fun. Come up with your own damn plans. This guy is out there doing stuff and you're sitting back complaining. Must be rough. - borderpatrol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0close enough
- jmccorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ghetto fabulous?
swap chique? - Uthman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with the previous comment. Maybe if we actually got plans it would at least be remotely cool
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool
i might just buid one - railgun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0there is a new version of the ROV in progress at www.rollette.com/rovrev2
- Reliant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*sniffs* that's a beautiful piece of work *sniffs*
- Petey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ALL of you bashers are a bunch of sour grapes, jealous A**holes! It's a shame you you technically illiterate jerks are allowed to post here!
- railgun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Partial Pressures of Compressed Air
(assuming air is 80% nitrogen, 20% oxygen)
Depth Atmosphere Absolute Pressure
0 1 14.7
33 2 29.4
66 3 44.1
99 4 58.8
132 5 73.5
165 6 88.2
198 7 102.9
231 8 117.6
264 9 132.3
297 10 147.0
So I would say that the pressure rating of schedule 40 pvc should be enough for all these conditions. - cptmorgan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Very Cool
- Odwalla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Did you click on any of the pictures, Od? Didn't think so."
You're wrong. I'm guessing you're used to that. I called the images on the front page thumbnails for a reason. The linked pictures don't do anyting to address my other salient points, though. Clicking on the thumbnails just shows you higher-resolution pictures of a pile of plastic sitting on a rug or sitting on a dock. - gunbuster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0There's a better, older story of a four high-school kids from a lower-income neighborhood of Phoenix who build something like this. Managed to beat out teams from MIT with their "Stinky" robot.

Much more interesting than this bit of self-promotion. - Odwalla, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0This is nothing but a self-promotional link to a page showing some extremely low resolution thumbnails of a pile of plastic sitting on a rug or sitting on a dock. There aren't any technical details and there's no proof this thing ever worked.
- EconNinja, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0"I made one of those when I was in high school.....no digg" -- What a loser.
- cybercreeper, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Can someone say "Terrorist Idea". As if they don't have enough ideas here's one more!

What is Digg?
