- built2spill, on 01/01/2009, -3/+133How will layoffs help AMD to catch up to Intel?
- silent128, on 01/02/2009, -12/+124I like Intel better. The only reason i want AMD around is to make Intel push harder and make chips cheaper.
- QsheiK, on 01/02/2009, -0/+73Technically we DO need AMD....and by that I mean we need them around. The last thing we want is a complete monopoly on the desktop processing sector by Intel.
- sexybobo, on 01/02/2009, -3/+651. Lay off all your R&D
2. ...
3. Profit - nikpappagiorgio, on 01/01/2009, -1/+41See, this is why you don't make millions in compensation as a CEO for navigating a successful company into bankruptcy. Next time think "If I was a CEO, what would yield me the most money in the short term (ie while I'm still working here) so I can ride out my mistakes?" Organic Growth and fixing real problems is for suckers.
- fatas, on 01/02/2009, -3/+36if it wasn't for AMD most of you won't be able to afford Intel chips (ok may be a celeron)
broke ass bitches - inactive, on 01/02/2009, -8/+38I need an intel i7 actually.
Maybe a 4850x2 as well, but certainly not a Phenom. - ileftfark, on 01/02/2009, -0/+25"Laying off loyal employees in the name of making a few extra bucks for investors is a scumsucking move and one that basically guarantees that my next CPU will be Intel."
Oh Intel, the company that's planning laying off 20,000 employees? Do it for altruism, dude. - inactive, on 01/02/2009, -0/+21When a company is doing well, there is a tendency for a firm to over-hire and over-pay staff that are under performing. So when times are not going as well, a company starts to look at what it needs versus what it wants.
It's not much different for individuals. When you are doing really financially well, you tend to do stupid things like buy new cars, get the expensive TV cable package, or go out to eat alot. Then when times get tougher, you try to cut back. Like buying used instead of new, putting up the bunny ears, and cooking at home.
What it comes down to is human nature.
My brother's company (Real) just went through the same thing and based on his comments, all of the 'performers' in the department, the people who were competent and dedicated, kept their jobs. The people that were terminated were mostly lazy and unneeded.
You will find this in many work environments.
And if you are an employee at such a company, you need to ask yourself if what you are doing really justifies what they are paying you and if it isn't, you either need to step up your game or start looking for a job elsewhere, because the day to pay the price will come. - FDL1, on 01/02/2009, -2/+22Seems highly optimistic. At least I bought a 4850, it's one AMD thing that's good even if it's by association (i.e., acquisition).
- Quakes, on 01/02/2009, -1/+19So... you've never had ANY problems with AMD, yet they "felt less reliable"?
- mshtml, on 01/02/2009, -1/+19Digg = Boiler Room
- Rantipole, on 01/02/2009, -0/+17We need competition in the market, whether it's AMD or somebody else.
- Mononuclear, on 01/02/2009, -2/+18If you have a really small boat with large sails it has everything to do with staying afloat. Have you ever been in a small sailboat? Ever had to lean far out from the side of the boat to keep it from tipping over when sailing fast in strong winds? If you have a big sail in a small boat you have a good chance of sinking.
- antdude, on 01/02/2009, -1/+16The only good current things from AMD are their video cards. I just got an Radeon 4870 vidoe card (512 MB). :)
- somestranger26, on 01/02/2009, -1/+15Too*.
- fluxion, on 01/02/2009, -1/+15seriously. and how is that intestinal fortitude? that's your standard, knee-jerk, short-sighted reaction.
not saying thats the case here, but employees are always the first ones to get the axe during hard times. what takes balls is to keep your employees on and commit them to ambitious new projects. i can see why this wouldnt always sit well with investors, but laying off employees is not "intestinal fortitude". maybe to joe schmoe, but this type of thing comes surprisingly easy to the guys running these companies (into the ground) - somestranger26, on 01/02/2009, -0/+14They just replaced their CEO a few months ago because the old one was useless. It's also quite difficult to just magically turn a failing company around as a new CEO given a massive amount of problems to deal with.
- inactive, on 01/02/2009, -4/+17HD4850 = excellent value.
for standard internet surfing, even most gaming, their X2 line starting with the 5000+ are also of excellent value. same price as the Pentium Dual Core, except far more powerful. - inactive, on 01/02/2009, -5/+17I'm not debating that Phenom II may be sweet. Really, I want it to be awesome. But right now I KNOW i7 is the *****. The 920 can hit 4 ghz on good air, and it's much more efficient than the core2quad (which was itself vastly more powerful per clock than the Phenom) but hey, we'll see what happens.
All I want is a triple channel DDR3 board for whatever the best new chip ends up being. I won't be upgrading for at least 6 months anyway, but when I do, it will be with the best bang for your buck on the market.
If that's Phenom II, then awesome, but I doubt that will be the case. - fuzzynyanko, on 01/02/2009, -0/+12The thing is this: the 4870 forced nVidia to lower the prices on the GTX260 and the 4870x2 forced them to drop the price on the GTX280.
- inactive, on 01/02/2009, -0/+12You've used computers?
We don't get many folk like you round here. - themoop, on 01/02/2009, -0/+12They need us and we need them
An all happy family - somestranger26, on 01/02/2009, -2/+14The Phenom II line is being deployed now and is much, much better than the original Phenom line. 45nm, drastically lowered power consumption, speeds up to 3ghz stock, large amounts of overclocking headroom (around 4ghz on air) and about the same price per clock as the original line.
- frsrblch, on 01/02/2009, -0/+10I was looking into one of those 4870s...
- x1300, on 01/02/2009, -0/+9Same here, its a great card for the money.
- shawnz, on 01/02/2009, -1/+10shhh... intel execs might read that
- KibibyteBrain, on 01/02/2009, -1/+10They won't. But sadly, not having layoffs hasn't been much help either. AMD used to specialize in being a price brand, and that seems to be where they are headed again. A leaner ship can keep afloat with a smaller sail, after all.
But the problem with this approach is its not like the 1990s. A midrange CPU costs about $150-$250 of 2009 dollars now, now about $300-$500 of 1994 dollars. So trying to win sales on being 25% cheaper/more value oriented doesn't have the same psychological crunch power it did back then. Good luck AMD. - MxM111, on 01/02/2009, -0/+9The only thing that you CAN be sure about any stock, AMD included, is that it can not become less than zero.
- RyanW2050, on 01/02/2009, -8/+16"AMD used to specialize in being a price brand, and that seems to be where they are headed again. A leaner ship can keep afloat with a smaller sail, after all."
Sails have nothing to do with staying afloat.... just saying. - PueSi, on 01/02/2009, -1/+9Another advantage of using AMD is that the Motherboards are cheaper, that's why AMD continues to be the best for mid-range.
- inactive, on 01/02/2009, -0/+8Business layoff people because revenue no longer supports the manpower. Consequently, when revenues are up so is employment. Its a matter of economics nothing more, nothing less. The sooner you don't take it personally, the sooner you get over it.
Disclaimer: I was thrown under the bus by a manager in 07. Took me months to cope with it. But once I did, I saw it for what it was. And give thanks that I'm no longer involved with that group. - Darkside2984, on 01/02/2009, -1/+9I love my Phenom 9950. Intel is for snobs.
- tnoy, on 01/02/2009, -1/+8It has more to do with the chipsets and surrounding hardware than the CPU itself.
- landoflewfalcon, on 01/02/2009, -0/+7try again
- inactive, on 01/01/2009, -2/+9You gotta figure there's tons of opportunity for low cost buying in this market. Question is, who's gonna jump in? AMD appears to be solid from this article but as always, further research is needed.
- valkyries, on 01/02/2009, -1/+8sad thing is that intel is already changing their Oregon plant over to 32nm already. Just bough an i7 and it still hasnt let me down yet. handbrake converting dvds at over 200fps kinda nice rendering that fast. playing tf2 at 1920/1200, the cpu is only really puttin in 20% its kickin ass and all out of bubble gum.
- cowie, on 01/02/2009, -2/+9Dugg for lame attempt at replicating "Diggs" with "Recs"
But yea, sad to so AMD possibly leave, since they are a big reason why Quad core prices are mad cheap. - TheSpook, on 01/02/2009, -0/+7I feel bad for you guys. Until you enter recovering, you won't understand the folly of your choices.
- acegi, on 01/02/2009, -1/+8still waiting for AMD's next offer.
if their next gen CPU can't compete with i7, might have to build an intel rig next. - mikedoth, on 01/02/2009, -3/+10I've had AMD inside since '02.
- NidStyles, on 01/02/2009, -0/+7Yes, because X86 CPU's with native 64 bit technology, and on die memory controller's were Intel's idea's. AMD just used their time machine to steal the technology from Intel, and then inplemented it in their chip's from the past.
- x1300, on 01/02/2009, -0/+6+1
- holeepenguinpee, on 01/02/2009, -1/+7I have a C2D and an old XP 2000+ doing server duty w/ubuntu. The 2000+ box has been going since 2002 and has never let me down. Their 380g chipset looks incredible in terms of price / performance (hardware H.264 decoding) etc. Basically you can create a hi-def mythtv box for $200 thanks to that chipset.
- petebert, on 01/02/2009, -0/+6did you use lube?
- quattros, on 01/02/2009, -0/+6unless your mac is an outdated paperweight, it's 100% Intel architecture
- BedPost, on 01/02/2009, -0/+6I hate to be a fanboy, but there's a special place in my heart for AMD, My Athlon 2500+ XP was the best damned CPU I ever owned - I overclocked the hell outta that chip, and it gave me a lot of love. I miss the good ol' days when AMD really gave Intel a run for their money. I mean hell, you could probably trace the excellence of today's Intel chips directly back to the Socket A era, when AMD came from behind and outengineered (and outpriced) Intel.
I really hope AMD stays alive, because we need a competitor to Intel. - OutlawAdidas, on 01/02/2009, -5/+11No. Wat I really need is a i7 940 with 6 gigs of ram and a kickass graphics card to run my photoshop...
- Minters, on 01/02/2009, -1/+7Management has the intestinal fortitude to make redundancies? *****. Management couldnt give a *****. They simply do what theyre told to do by the board or Human Resources. AMD do make great processors, at one point surpassing Intels efforts by a mile, but Intel currently have a clear lead and I dont see them giving it up any time soon.
