- AmyVernon, on 08/13/2008, -0/+24That really is a shame. The first computer I bought myself was a Gateway. It served me well. And I always loved the boxes.
- inactive, on 08/13/2008, -0/+22I loved their boxes, but i went dell instead. actually all my comps have been dells except toshiba laptop (using now). I'm not a big Acer fan either, seem flimsy to me but then again i wouldn't be surprised if all computers came from the same Chinese or Pakistan factory line. So long Gateway! Goodbye gentle prince...
- ChileanGoD, on 08/13/2008, -0/+19eMachines ftw.
- inactive, on 08/13/2008, -0/+16Boxes were great - their computers were usually a problem. I remember when they opened a HUGE Gateway store where I lived and closed it shortly thereafter...
- inactive, on 08/13/2008, -0/+15I only bought one PC and it was a Gateway back in '99. I've built the rest since and the customer service has been flawless. :-D
- johnnychandler, on 08/13/2008, -0/+15Nothing last forever! All the big boys are getting bought out it seems. They did have it going on with the funky cow boxes, made you want to order one just to get that cool box. Just like a good beer or the perfect phone, somebody is always changing the good stuff!
- inactive, on 08/13/2008, -0/+10Wow never knew this
- inactive, on 08/13/2008, -0/+9The only brand PC I bought was a used IBM, like 7 years ago. Since then I've been designing and building them myself, it's way cheaper, I choose every single component and it's much more powerful, not to mention that I know that job was well done and I don't have to wait for RMA + weeks to have my PC back IF it breaks down.
- inactive, on 08/13/2008, -0/+8Not unless they improved tremendously since the last 500 I've had to fix.
- jboitnott, on 08/13/2008, -3/+11I hate PC's -- and this is one of the stores that solidified my feelings.
- louiebaur, on 08/13/2008, -0/+8I heard that Gateway computers kind of sucked but they do have a cool marketing plan. I did see all those stores getting closed down i figured something was up.
- moracity, on 08/14/2008, -0/+6Actually, MPC took over Gateway's business line last year and is trying to rebuild from the ashes of Micron PC. They've been coming in #1 in customer satisfaction in their notebooks. It'll be interesting to see what happens.
- inactive, on 08/13/2008, -0/+5Gateway sucked anyway.
- Troy64, on 08/13/2008, -0/+4My wife has a Gateway notebook. I have had more problems with it than any of my much older IBM or Dell notebooks.
- B00Radley, on 08/13/2008, -0/+4Do you still get the cow box?
- DeskFlyer, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3I wasn't going to anyway.
- AussieCynic, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3whys the point.... cant buy gateways from gateway... arggghhhhhhh
- synystar, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3I've built every PC I've ever owned. Customer service hasn't been so flawless. I solve 99% of my problems, but sometimes hardware fails and then you have to deal with the manufacturer. For example, when the fan on your video card crumbles and falls off for no good reason, you still have to call ATI and deal with a dumbass who wants to walk you through their flowchart.
"Listen, I don't think you're understanding me, I'm looking at it right now. Like I've said, multiple times, the fan is not attached to card. The reason my screen is blank is because the processor is fried. The reason the processor is fried is because THE ***** FAN BROKE! Can I please talk to someone else?"
ATI sucks by the way. - illustrious87, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3just got a gateway 3 weeks ago from best buy
- AmyVernon, on 08/13/2008, -0/+3Well, you win, then.
- lesleye, on 08/13/2008, -0/+3I still miss my ZX Spectrum. :-(
- sungoddess808, on 08/13/2008, -0/+2Gateway computers do kind of suck.. but at least they got rid of that horrible cow design..
- sq2shooter, on 08/13/2008, -0/+2No thanks. I would rather pay a little more to not have to build one myself and not be the one who has to repair it when it breaks. I buy computers like cars. Already built and with a warranty.
- synystar, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2That's one of those comments where /sarcasm just isn't necessary.
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2I had the gateway performance pc back in 2001 when I was 11, got me into computers on those boring days with nothing to do, just taking it apart and putting it back together, and now here I am getting a computer science degree! I'm gunna miss you gateway, with your cow boxes and your pre packed Deer Hunter and Grand Prix games.
- richman241, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2I think its goodbye sweet prince
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2The motherboard of this one is a Gateway. It is the one I bought for my daughter when she went off to college.Replaced hard drives, CD/ROM
Oh, and a cooling fan.
Luckily it was not ATI.
First computer I dealt with was in '79 on an '80 Caddy. If you want to talk about a flow chart I think that one is pretty interesting. Basically you check all of the components and if they all worked they sent you a new one.
We've come a long way since then. My wife has a laptop, don't remember the brand. She uses it only for work.
My oldest sister is retired and has a Dell that serves her needs well.
In fact aside from my mom I don't know anyone without access to one. - armonde, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2What's the saying from my IT days? Nobody was ever fired for buying IBM...
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1oops thank you Mr Hamlet police...just kidding. Yeah I should have checked first. cheers
