- metzner, on 05/07/2008, -0/+7Dugg. Linux machines should be cheaper :)
- Goomba37, on 05/07/2008, -0/+5Get stuffed ASUS, I was going to buy one of these and now I won't, nor will I buy another ASUS laptop (I have a rather expensive one), MoBo or anything else with your badge on it. I am so angry about this. I'm not a Linux fanboi, but I'm pragmatic enough to know that as a consumer, I know a rort when I see it (Ebay in Oz anyone).
- podgey22, on 05/07/2008, -0/+5Needless to say, the hardware is improved in the Linux version (an extra 4gigs of storage). I'm not sure if that justifies the $50 (which dollar by the way?) price hike but there you go...
Here's another angle though. You go out to buy an Eee PC and you see two models. XP costing however much and Linux costing a smidgin more. Even if you've never heard what Linux is, part of you is going to see that model as a somehow better.
Plenty of people believe you get what you pay for. Perhaps this is what's needed to improve public perception of a great operating system.
I mean I could be completely wrong, but why else boost the physical stats on the Linux model? - thoughtcube, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4If I'm not mistaken, the Linux version has 8 GB more storage - 20 GB vs. 12 GB.
Asus's original goal was to make the Linux version's hardware better, allowing the Windows version to cost the same. But perhaps Microsoft are now giving them XP for free, and this is the reason that the Windows version is now cheaper...? - interoperate, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3What we need are PC manufacturers with principles that are ready to say no to Microsoft.
Right now they all just Microsoft pawns. - littlemissdlt, on 05/08/2008, -0/+3I thought originall the whole point of xp having less hard drive space was so the machines can be offered at the same price, not so it could be sold cheaper (even though there's windows licensing fees). I'm extremely unimpressed. And everywhere else they're offered at the same price. I'm very upset, but I'll still buy the linux version though. Just starting to feel more ripped off about it!!
- inactive, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2It says in the article the windows box has less storage to help make up for the cost of Windows.
- wonderbird, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2I was looking forward to buying one of these... Smells like something underhanded is going on...
- akiratheoni, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2It doesn't make any sense! The EEE PC was the hope that Linux users had to having mainstream adoption or at least more awareness of Linux! Now with the Linux version being more expensive, the only people who will buy the Linux one will be people who already are accustomed to Linux. There's virtually no chance that a non-Linux user will buy the Linux one, even if there is a small difference in storage space.
