- defectDS, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Indeed. The Cube had an external power supply which powered both the monitor and the cube, and 1/4 the size!
- tavisjohn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14PPTTTHHHH I have had an external Power Supply for 4 years!

See that box on my PC that is glowing blue? That is a 400watt External PSU. (It is running along with my internal 450watt PSU, Yes I am running dual PSU's) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I find external peripherals quite cumbersome. External hardrive, external disc drives, etc. I'd rather have a single case; a centralized control center and not worry about a cluster of appendices. That's just me though.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -14/+25Uhh Mac Mini? It's had an external power supply since it's existance.
Ohh, you're talking about for any other PC. Gotcha. - psylence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10A solution looking for a problem
- battlefield1985, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11is this really the first? if so...bout time. +Digg
- cyrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Great way to cut down on some heat in the case. Plus this will help open up cube pc's some more for some better airflow.
- 06metzp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Many mini-itx-based systems have used external PSUs for quite some time.
- 06metzp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"who goes to lans anymore anyway, dsl is so pervasive now there is no need."
No need, maybe. But it's still a lot of fun to be with your friends while you're playing games instead of just communicating with them via text or headset. Besides, it's a good excuse to eat lots of pizza and drink lots of caffeine. :) - CatFood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Most people prefer dedicated clan servers and comfort of their own home to LAN parties. I was a big believer about 2 years ago, but now it's just a hassle. +Digg for me :)
- bnolsen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Some UPS vendor like APC should come up with a scheme where their UPS outputs only 12V DC.
Run the 12V cable into a 12V->5V 12V->3.3V stepper which replaces the current PS. - vertigoblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4you obviously didn't read the article... it connects to an adapter plate inside where the old power supply used to go. and then branches out to all your components.
- vertigoblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I wish people would read the articles before commenting...
- ecksman321, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Mac Mini is not 'any other PC'...PC being the key
- suneo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4ho hum? is your external power supply fanless?
- XSforMe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Most of the ultraform factor Dells come with this type of powersupply.
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What are you talking about? It does have that.
- longofest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3did you see the detail about FANLESS? It's important for those wishing for a high-powered but low-noise setup

The double-underlined onmouseover links will look and act like normal text - digitalgopher, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6it appears to be the first external one for PCs.
- markperia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3technology is moving fast
next thing you know there'd be nuclear power plants on the back of our CPUs - spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I could see something like this being useful in data centers. Separate rackspace for the PSUs and servers. It would take a different formfactor to pull it off well, though.
- fgb00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does the Mac mini really have an external power supply? or is it just a transformer brick?
Just curious. I'm thinking of buying one. - zeebo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Quiet, powerful power supply for an HTPC which has the added benefit of being able to power a whole bunch of disk drives, and won't heat up the inside of the case meaning you can have more powerful components inside.
Sounds like a perfect fit for my little Antec Aria system. - gothicx00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is very very useful... the more heat you can take *out* of the PC and keep it out the better. With GPUs starting to generate nearly as much heat as a CPU (especially in SLI situations) and it's expected only get worse, taking one of the major proponents of heat out of the case is a great idea! I might end up getting one of these eventually, espcially if i go with a small form factor box. My gf has one, and although it's only running an XP 3000+ and a ATI x1300, it still is a little heat box in of it self. Kudos to the designers and DIGG!
- surferben182, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4what about Apple's power supply for the Mac Mini? Is that the same thing (except that its only 85 Watts) I find it hard to believe that this is the first external ever.
- Silby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think it's being overrated. It clears up some space in your case, and it keeps everything cooler, easier. But it would only work well on wood flooring, and 60 dollars to take up more space? Maybe I don't find it appealing because I see better alternatives. Fanless is a plus, but still...
- longofest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2exactly... Small desktop and Laptop power adapters are external, but they are anywheres from 50 - 120 watts max. This thing is a 600 Watt external power supply, so it's meant for a workhorse.
The fact that it's external allows it to be fanless, so you can have a cool rig. Imagine the possibilities. A high-powered setup that draws 600 watts from this thing with liquid cooling... You wouldn't have practically any fans except on the radiator (which is by all counts minimal to convection cooled). - ravuya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My Amiga has an external power supply. So does my Atari 800XL, laptop, and Mac Mini.
- Olle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Maybe I'm a niche person then. I've been wondering for years why not all computers are built with an external powr supply.
It just doesn't make sense to put a heat generator inside a heat sensitive box in my opinion. - mailman-zero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I want to report your typing as "Inacurate."
- ender52, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So, which of those have 600 watt power supplies?
- sl4x0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow do you know anything about high performance computers? you want to reduce any major sources of heat in side the case as possible.
- roeboedog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree - but the true geek in me wants a lighted switch and oh my gowd is that a display with useless information on it.
- spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Yeah. It would have been nice if they posted a couple of pictures that showed that.
- r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Everyone mocked the Amiga for having it's Power-Brick, but now it's all come back full circle, and it's a good idea now :P
Especially with those badly designed (most) PC cases, cos the PSU heat affects the heat of everything else. - prosthetichead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I Don't think this would be to bad for lans.
I already have an external power supply for my LCD one more larger one will not hurt.
hell last lan I went to some guy had his whole computer put together with no Case because it was easyer to fit on the bus that way! Now that would have been painful to setup! - iMatt711, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i wouldnt want one i prefer to keep everything in my pc to me external is just one big four letter word
- CardinalFang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This might not be THE first external power supply for a computer, but it could be the one to break into the mainstream. And someone above said they'll wait for the price to drop. This thing's 60 bucks; about the same as what you'd pay for an internal one.
- Claw787, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1can someone build an external CPU? i need to get rid of that fan noise !!!
- Woknblues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1when computers were fairly low powered, they figured to just stick them inside, but now that they are hot and powerful again, maybe the PSU should be on the outside like it is on lots of things anyway... My guess is that the externals need to be better armored and sealed, thus making them more expensive per comparable unit...If you have a regular tower like most do, you can't possibly tell me that 95% of you don't have a big bowl of spaghetti behind your rig, what's an extra black box back there going to do to your aesthetics?
- plefno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Unless I'm just looking at this wrong, with this external power supply you're going to have to run a bazillion cables from it into your case to power all your hard drives etc. As if computers don't already have enough cables? I don't really see this as a good product. I guess there are certain niche applications, but I'd much rather have as many components of my computer inside the case.
- joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digg for the idea. I hadn't realised how stupid it is having it the box with everything else. The execution is a bit of a muddle but a good step towards making the external power supple the best option.
They need to make it smaller, non dust trap, proper single cable system, and rethink the structure for external positional requirements.
If you had that one it would look like you just couldn't be bothered to put your computer together properly. - mailman-zero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"...duel core..."
AMD Chip: I can beat the pants off you, I'm so much faster than... um... is that a sword?
Intel Duel Core Chip: Engarde! - madar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is not a first; devices like this have been on the market in Taiwan for several years now. This is probably just the first company to market one in the US.
- TVarmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Some of the smaller shuttle barebones have external power supplies.
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The 20th Anniversary Macintosh had an external PSU, and that was 10 years ago.
The PSU was also a subwoofer. - longofest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1anyone else feeling like this would have been great when Netburst was still big? Now that power consumption is actually going DOWN, this doesn't really seem to be all that big of a deal.
- mckinnej, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I see I'm not the only one that noticed this. I wired a big power supply to my Amiga. I mounted it under the desk. It was quiet, had plenty of oomph, and kept my legs warm. :-) It also eliminated the need to have a huge beige box on my desk. I never understood why some folks thought that having a remote power supply made the Amiga a "toy" computer. At the time, it was much better than anything in the PC world. I think it's time to serve up a little crow...
- GaleForce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool idea.
