- Sp4nk, on 10/12/2007, -17/+77Inaccurate. Nobody uses a PS3, so they're really not consuming any power.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+58That is the biggest RSS Feed button I've ever seen.
- lowlight, on 10/12/2007, -5/+52Nintendo Wii: Video Games for Tree Huggers ;)
- wendelgee2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31Except that the wiimote eats 2AA batteries every couple of weeks...which isn't so green. (Yes, I sprang for the NiMH rechargeables...I'm just saying, for those who didn't, that's a lot of nasty crap to be tossing into the land fills.)
- aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30Even though I have a Wii, I would prefer the video games for non-tree huggers. I hear 'Rape the ***** Out of the Land' for the 360 is quite good.
- lowlight, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25You'd be crazy (or stupid) to use anything but rechargeable batteries with the Wii
- FloppyLlamaDigg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22Observing power consumption in electronics is absurd?
I heartily disagree, sir. - BobMysterioso, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17ps3 - clearly.
Any other questions? - BobMysterioso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I'm glad they included the standby with wiiconnect 24 on. This changes the power amount a fair bit since its 24x7.
- AaronTyler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I wonder how much power that uses?
- JimmyRyan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10LMAO!! I didnt even notice that!!
- danknerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7as tim the tool man taylor would agree with, More Power = better
- noodlez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6i've seen a bigger one. it was about the same size but it had a web2.0 reflection below it, so it was about 50% taller.
- Crest444, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8That's not a big RSS button. THIS is a big RSS button! http://www.johnchow.com/the-worlds-biggest-rss-button/
- Angostura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The most interesting thing to me was how much the Wii uses on Standby with Connect 24 active. 10 Watts? Wow. Turning it off immediately.
- EzarKun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It would be interesting to see the power consumption from the new xbox360.
- MaxPayne3476, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://wii.ign.com/index/release.html
8 Mario games are to be released this year - two have release dates. The rest are TBA 2007 - Zarxrax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5One of the things I dislike about the Wii is its high power consumption when you have wiiconnect24 enabled. Sure, I can turn it off, but for some reason Nintendo saw fit to completely DISABLE many features if you don't have it turned on! Want to check the news channel? Sorry, you have to leave wiiconnect24 turned on. Weather channel? Yep, it needs to be on. Why can't I just leave it off and then have it download the materials right when I want to access them?
And does wiiconnect24 REALLY need to keep connecting to the internet so often? It will check for updates like every 5 minutes! Why can't they just have it check once every hour or so, then the rest of the time it could be in full standby. None of this makes any sense! - DaLeech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Watts is joules/second
- JimmyRyan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It actually makes alot of sense.. I got my electricity bill yesterday and it was insanely high.. I kept looking at my 360 as if it may be the culprit as I leave it on all the time.. Turns out it is at least part of it..
- MrFoof82, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@Crest444
P'shaw! You call *that* an RSS button? Now THIS is an RSS button: http://www.havelaptopwilltravel.com/biggestRSS.html - Hey_Vern, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Interesting, but has this ever been on anyone's decision matrix for selecting which console to buy?
Edit: TheSeraph conveyed my thoughts in a much more creative way. - Zarxrax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, the numbers for the wii are in line with a previous article I saw that did pretty much the same thing.
- actn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3FTA:
"As a side note, all tests were done at 220V, 50 Hz power, with the exception of the Wii which is connected to a step-down converter. When the step-down converter was used, the power meter was plugged into the [sic]converer, and the Wii into the power meter. This eliminates any extra wattage the converter uses from being a factor in these tests."
I don't understand--shouldn't the tests have been conducted with the Wii's step-down converter plugged into the power meter? Wouldn't that change the scores considerably? Just a thought. - augmental, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I don't agree with this comment from the article and it almost seems like they tried to sneak this comment in there near the end for some "the PS3 is actually good" type of brainwashing, heh -
"XBOX 360's Dashboard console is power-hungry (and slow). PS3's is slick and uses a lot of power, but no more than playing a DVD."
360 Dashboard is slow? PS3's is slick? Umm...no and no. The 360 Dashboard is really easy to use and very responsive whereas the PS3 XMB is unintuitive and is very "not slick", IMO. PS3 XMB < 360 Dashboard. Period. - Black913Hole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i disagree; "decision matrix" was quite creative
- PFS1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5>> XMPC works because it's easy to hack what is basically a PC.
No, it was easy to PORT because it's basically a PC. It being "basically a PC" does not give it a performance boost when it comes to the task of decoding video. Macs played video and DVDs just fine when they were PowerPC based, which incidentally is instruction set upon which that the Wii is based.
>> The Wii is a specialized console meant to do only want Nintendo wants it to do.
Agreed, that makes it tough to run custom code (no one has been successful yet), but that doesn't mean it will decode video poorly when custom code can be run.
>> If it could play MPEG-2, do you think Nintendo would have left out DVD playback?
They did this because of the cost of licencing, not because the hardware can't handle it. Nintendo have mentioned the possibility of a Wii with DVD playback being released in the future.
>> Of course that doesn't mean it will be impossible. But anything that does come out will have to be a total hack, using Wii's gaming components to decode video.
This is ridiculous. Do you think that a CPU in a gaming system is so utterly optimized for "gaming" operations (your wording, I have no idea what these would be) that it would be rendered incapable of the ability to do the mathematical operations necessary for SD video decompression? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Sorry, the original Xbox with it's first gen controller clearly wins in the "fatal injury caused by use as a projectile" catagory.
- BobMysterioso, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11as a foot rest - ps3
as a bookend - wii - it has the little stabilizer base and would actually fit on a shelf
stacking ease - too hard to tell - wii on its side is clear winner - but xbox on its side would work ok too.
likeliest to have its remote picked up thinking it was the tv remote - (not a fair question really) - Wii
least likely to be thought of as a wii - PS3 (not relevant) - lowlight, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6The XBOX was basically a PC, so of course it supported all those. In fact, with DVD support, it had a hardware MPEG-2 decoder. You can't compare XBOX to Wii - it's complete apples and oranges.
XMPC works because it's easy to hack what is basically a PC. The Wii is a specialized console meant to do only want Nintendo wants it to do. If it could play MPEG-2, do you think Nintendo would have left out DVD playback?
Of course that doesn't mean it will be impossible. But anything that does come out will have to be a total hack, using Wii's gaming components to decode video. It's not entire impossible down the road, but I don't know if anyone is working on this. - lowlight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Because at idle, it's not really idle. It's running the "Dashboard" which obviously requires more computational power than playing DVD and WMV. That's kind of the point of the article ;)
You did read the article, right? ;) - lowlight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I highly doubt the hard drive is using 170 watts
- PFS1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6>> Unfortunately I think the best the Wii will ever do video-wise is FLV.
FLV only? Really? What are on earth are you basing this on?
XBMC can uses an Mplayer video playback core and can handle Cinepak, DV, H.263, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, HuffYUV, Indeo, MJPEG, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 Part 2, RealVideo, Sorenson, Theora, and WMV. If the xbox can do it without much difficulty, It's a sure thing that the wii can too.
I know the wii isn't as powerful as we would have liked, but it still suprises me that people think that it is underpowered to the point of it being positively gimped- like when people say that it couldn't handle PS2's San Andreas and such. This is a terrible stigma, because while it is no 360 or PS3, it has a very decent amount of power *especially* for it's size and wattage. Combined with the wiimote I think it is absolutely ideal for homebrew and a WiiMC, when it can be developed. - alex32211, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"ps3 - clearly."
That's assuming you can pick it up. - KirinDave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I call ***** on these numbers from the Wii. The Wii should easily win this competition, why are the numbers fudged by not adding in the converter?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You FTL.
- memoBug, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Interesting, I suppose, but power consumption is my last consideration in choosing a platform or game... or a website.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It sounds like you guys are comparing your penises to each other.
- franksands, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That just made my day...I think i will put it in my blog :P
- CarzorStelatis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Hmm... or maybe they did it because their target market is interested in gameplay quality, rather than 10000p HD Pixel Shader 5 graphics.
- CarzorStelatis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Since it isn't out yet, no.
- lowlight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This was to test the power consumption of the Wii, as everyone who is using their own native console would be, so the external stepdown converter had to be left out.
I have a Canadian Wii (110v) in Hong Kong (220v), so I have to convert the voltage. The results are the same as they would be had the testing been done on a Canadian Wii in Canada, or a HK Wii in HK, etc, etc. - Jeraden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1According to those charts, the Xbox360 uses more power just being Idle than it does when playing a DVD or HD content. That doesn't really sound logical.
- Zarxrax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm sure it also has something to do with the massive cpu and gpu on those 2 consoles...
- CarzorStelatis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1'However, I tested power consumption of the PS3 under Blu-Ray playback, and the XBOX 360 playing a 720p WMV-HD video downloaded from the XBOX Live Marketplace. Not exactly the best indicator of performance, since HD-DVD will be using a different codec. But this is the best I can do for now.'
Actually, iirc HD-DVD uses VC1 which is the standardised version of WMV. - BigSlacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think that's sensible. It's not really "idling" but running their console application. When playing movies, it can cut out the 3D rendering.
- CarzorStelatis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Would probably be higher than the X360 using WMV-HD. Why? Because as well as decoding the hidef video, it's got to run the drive as well. OK it has its own powerbrick, but still...
- hulk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't really care that much about power consumption.
I'm MUCH more concerned at how crispy hot my wii gets when I leave connect24 on. It gets way too hot considering it's not doing anything. - CarzorStelatis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yes, you're the only one who cares. 160W is two or three lightbulbs. Big deal.
- zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Almost like they don't want people reading their website and use rss instead...
