- MacBookForMe, on 05/16/2009, -14/+146Was that a promise about Crysis?
- dinglebutt, on 05/16/2009, -2/+133And Gillette will have released their 64 blade razor.

- 473NGR, on 05/16/2009, -7/+94The question is ...Will it run Crysis?
- TyrannousDotNet, on 05/16/2009, -8/+91can it run Duke Nukem: Forever?
- jermm, on 05/16/2009, -4/+82No, it won't run Crysis, they only have x86/x64 builds.
- dinglebutt, on 05/16/2009, -11/+69Digg has ads?
Adblock FTW - tablunket, on 05/16/2009, -2/+55gonna have to pick me up one of those.

How expensive is something like that? - commentposted, on 05/16/2009, -1/+48...in 15 years when they're released to the public.
- steelreserve211, on 05/16/2009, -2/+47My guess is at least one cow and a chicken or two.
- fuzzybeard, on 05/16/2009, -2/+44It's like shopping for a Rolls-Royce; if you have to ask, you can't afford it.
- rnawky, on 05/16/2009, -2/+42By the time it does, Intel will have released its 128 core CPU already.
- JekJob, on 05/16/2009, -10/+48What? You aren't using Ad-blocker Plus?
- Maccc, on 05/16/2009, -4/+4042
- luke16, on 05/16/2009, -2/+37It's a shame the japanese won't be using it. I heard that Cyberdyne Systems in Sunnyvale, California recently just bought the first one. Their using it for Skynet or something? Waste if you ask me.

- Khast, on 05/16/2009, -3/+35AMD Athlon @ 600 mhz - 2.4 gigaflops (single precision), 1 gigaflop (double precision)
Pentium 4 @ 2 ghz - 8 gigaflops (single precision)
Pentium 4 @ 3 ghz - 12 gigaflops
Athlon 64 X2 4600 - 14.7 gigaflops, 17400 MIPS

XBox 360 Xenon chip -115 gigaflops
XBOX 360 Xenos graphics chip - 240 gigaflops
nVIDIA 7800 GTX 512 - 200 gigaflops
ATi X1900 - 553.8 gigaflops - kamikazecow, on 05/16/2009, -0/+31You havn't played crysis at max have you?
- RyeBrye, on 05/17/2009, -0/+30I got a chance to play with one of these. It was so fast, it completed an infinite loop in 3 seconds. Many functions returned values before they were even called. It was awesome.
- booyahbitch, on 05/16/2009, -1/+31MARTY!?!?!
- LaughingMan89, on 05/16/2009, -0/+27An nVidia GeForce GTX 285 has a peak throughput of over 1 TeraFLOP, which is still about 8 times faster than the SPARC64 VIIIfx Venus. As it stands CPUs are still bad at emulating GPUs. (and GPUs are bad at emulating CPUs) So no, you won't be able to run Crysis (at least not on high settings) with just a Venus.
- inactive, on 05/16/2009, -0/+27JIGGAWATTZ!
- NathanielJ, on 05/16/2009, -0/+27...the point is so that researchers CAN do those intense calculations. I'm confused at how that's even a question.
- jo21, on 05/17/2009, -0/+26it can emulate crysis.
- NathanielJ, on 05/16/2009, -0/+24Supercomputers aren't used to play games or some such thing, they're for doing CPU-intensive tasks. Many research programs that are left to run depend 99% on the speed of the CPU.
- inactive, on 05/16/2009, -1/+25It has enough power to tear a hole through the space-time continuum to a parallel universe where Duke Nukem Forever was actually released.
- A5204, on 08/13/2009, -0/+23Did it start looking for Sarah Connor after that?
- maxvette, on 05/16/2009, -3/+2520 years? unlikely.
10 years? probably. - jeremymccurdy, on 05/16/2009, -0/+22Pretty much anything directed by Uwe Boll.

- TVarmy, on 05/16/2009, -1/+22All the best stuff comes from Japan, Doc.
- Macintoshreader, on 05/16/2009, -1/+21This comment proves that you can't fix stupid. This CPU doesn't run on either a PC or a Mac. It's a SPARC.
- Nickolassc, on 05/16/2009, -1/+20I know it's not a general purpose GPU quite yet, but the ATI Radeon HD 4890 can do 1.6 terraflops.
- luke16, on 05/16/2009, -1/+20Still waiting for my hoverboard.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4F7TMlrDXtw - frazw, on 05/17/2009, -0/+17...because 32 bit or 64 bit is not enough in this situation.
x86 refers to the instruction set architecture used by intel and subsequently by AMD cyrix and the like. x64 refers to the 64bit extensions made to that architecture, i.e. it is backwards compatible with x86, which is why you can run 32bit apps on you 64bit processor.
This processor is not x86, it is SPARC which is an entirely different instruction set architecture developed by Sun.
Code must be compiled into machine code which the processor executes. If the code is compiled for one architecture it won't run on another. Therefore Crysis would not run because this processor won't understand x86 instructions correctly. - techtock, on 05/17/2009, -0/+17Try later this year: http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/29/intel-said-to-b ...
Not sure if they can achieve 128 gigaflops, but it is an eight-core processor and there should be sixteen-core cpu's on the market next year....
BTW, the Xeon MP X7460 can reach 63.84 GLOPS.
The Singularity is near! - 15thPD, on 05/17/2009, -2/+18You're "special" if you don't.
- NathanielJ, on 05/16/2009, -1/+17They're obviously talking about double-precision operations in the article, and the PS3 only does about 15 GFLOPS in double-precision. The PS3's processor is 3.2GHz. Why on earth would they write an article about something that gets beaten by a 3.2GHz processor?
