- doctorcaligari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I just tried to stick a 2.5in HDD in my car's CD player. Doesn't fit. The memory card that I put in the slot got sucked in to God-knows-where, but I don't hear any music. I guess I'll have to stick to "legacy" media like CD-R's or something.
I'm thinking that if you live in a country that institites a blank media tax (not the US), then you aren't supporting the RIAA/MPAA. You're supporting Whatever-country-you're-in-AA. At least with one blank media tax, you can copy 100 CD or DVD's without paying even more money to the RIAA/MPAA/WCYIAA. - d2nd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"some countries"
what does the last letter of in both MPAA and RIAA stand for?
learn about "blank media tax" in the US - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5perhaps one that only goes on half the dvd, and spins the disk as it writes! and then, a quarter of the disk, and then, an 8th, and so on
technology can and will always get smaller - LordSkywalker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I guess this is going to be marketed at the people who have waited this long to buy a dvd burner. And haven't bought a computer, with one built in, in the last five years.
- d2nd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4some dont have any optical drives

Huh? I believe the article states that this is for laptops.
It's only about been about six months or so since DVD burners have made it into affordable sub-$1000 laptops. In the last five years? Desktops from 2001/2002 were just getting CD-RW drives, and possibly a DVD-ROM. Most laptops didn't even have a CD burner then, unless you shelled out big $$$. Not everyone has a thousand dollars laying around to pick up a new laptop every year.
This is a great product for those of us that lack a notebook DVD-RW drive, however the article is correct at stating that it won't have a small price tag. I bet that it will cost $200. Any takers? - d2nd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5how does use of an optical format support the RIAA/MPAA?
you obviously dont know enough to be labeling anything as 'legacy technology' - d2nd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3tell what to the pirate bay?
The governments that have a blank media tax do not give money to American anti-piracy organizations. The US government or MPAA/RIAA may be able to exert influence on foreign governments, but that by no means implies that tax dollars are funding these organizations.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ew, plextor is horrid
- Himself, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2some people like quality.. those people but plextor
- aOenEz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How small can a DVD burner really get? I mean come on, in order to BURN a DVD, it needs to HOLD a DVD inside of it. By definition that already means it's going to be big... lol.
Not hatin', just sayin'.
Digg though. - CJz44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@doctorcaligari

The Whatever-country-you're-in Association of America? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Um... The maximum power draw over USB 2.0 is 500 mW. How do they expect it to get up to 4.8 W while burning a CD? It CANNOT be bus powered!
- ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can somebody explain me why plextor is still in the optical media burning buisness?... It seems it has been two years since LG is owning that segment. Their burners are so cheap and reliable. I havent seen plextor burners for sale for a long time.
- doctorcaligari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2LOL...yeah I caught that after the edit. Sorry, it was 6am. Damn insomnia.
It should read the RIAWCYI...Recording Industry Association of Whatever Country You're In. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2what about UMPC's (even if they are a failure, do they come with dvd burners?)
- HHarrelson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used an ATA to USB converter and a 12 volt power supply to externalize an Pioneer internal DVD burner. Worked fine.
- au071, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks very nice, wonder how much will this one cost.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just got a similar LG DL Burner for my older HP ePC micro PC thingy. Its got a little adaptor that fits on the back of the drive which converts it to standard IDE format and it even gets its power through the IDE cable.
It'd be easy peasy to wack on a USB-IDE adaptor, hell, it could probably even get its power over the USB as well. - sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I am not really sure why this is special.
This: http://www-131.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=-124&storeId=10000124&langId=124&dualCurrId=1000075&categoryId=2581908&productId=4611686018425155677
has been out for ages. It IS internal not external but if your just stuck a different port on the back i am not sure why it couldnt be external. - battlefield1985, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1looks like a nice drive.
- kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2 People still use expensive external dvd burners? I thought most new computers and laptops had them built in.

Just buy "non-Music" CD-R's and no taxes. Who uses those anyway? - Prometheus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just don't buy "Music" CD-R's and no taxes.
Stupid wireless cut out while editing comment... - hobbla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Someone's drunk
- shadowsurfr1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Himself, it's for the ultra portable laptops which are most likely less than 2/3" thick.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Most tablet PC's dont have internal burners to cut down on weight and size. These are handy to keep in your bag and pulled out when needed.
- Gimli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it's a cool device and I don't understand how the subject always turns to RIAA discusion....must be a bunch of ACLU liberals.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just wait 2 or 3 months and itll fall. Really who buys technology the day of release or preorder? Just people with more money than sense.
- slcrew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This will make Internet market much bigger. I can't wait to see it!
- vbsurfer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Whos traveling and burning DVDs? Most people on the go would rather use a thumb drive.
- Himself, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1If only it would be made to fit a variety of port adapters to fit IN notebooks
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3Blank media tax that exists in some countries, hello!!
Are you naturally so ***** clueless in the world or must you work hard at it? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Tell that to the PirateBay.
Again, you show your lack of knowledge in WORLD CURRENT AFFAIRS. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3So many engadget blogspams recently.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3Why would you want to SUPPORT the RIAA/MPAA by using DVD's/CD's?
I cannot remember the last time I burned a disc. Use other means. 2.5" external HD's or memory cards etc. I see no need for this legacy technology.
