- j128, on 02/02/2008, -23/+159This will be good for faster MacBook Airs. Oh wait. Almost nobody cares about the Mac Air.
- AlienMushroom, on 02/21/2008, -1/+43That means we run out of memory FASTER!
- StitchedUp, on 02/02/2008, -0/+34oh the possibilities of this new NAND in a RAID is frightening
- badenglishihave, on 02/02/2008, -1/+32Best part about this? It will most likely drive down prices of the "old" style SSD's.
- MacEnvy, on 02/02/2008, -1/+30Imagine a beowulf cluster of ...
Nevermind, wrong site. - romistrub, on 02/02/2008, -0/+25Yes, clearly the people who beat you out for the job would be less qualified than you. ;)
Also, ERTW. - ThetaDot, on 02/02/2008, -2/+22You just woke up to read this? You've been sleeping this whole time? Are you a bear?
- AlienMushroom, on 02/21/2008, -0/+18200 MBps. Gotta learn to read.
- MusicalGenius, on 02/02/2008, -16/+32I can't believe I sunk you. When I read your comment I thought...stupid whatever...fanboy...
then right as I clicked down I saw "Oh wait. Almost nobody cares..." I felt so ashamed as I loved your comment so much yet I didn't give it my support:( digg me down - mrsteveman1, on 02/02/2008, -0/+15RTFM != RTFA
You seem to have missed both - romistrub, on 02/02/2008, -0/+11Care to expand? You seem very enthusiastic about your opinion. What did Intel do to AMD beyond what is legitimate between competing businesses?
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 02/02/2008, -0/+10how does it sound? prohibitively expensive. it'll be nice in a few years when it's actually affordable.
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 02/02/2008, -9/+18trust me, people care a lot about the air. i was at the apple 5th ave store for most of the day today, and it's been insanely mobbed since the macbook airs were put on display last night (friday night) at about 11pm. people have even flown in from other countries to try to buy them. no joke.
just because you don't care about the macbook air doesn't mean that everyone else on the planet agrees with you.
i must admit, though, i was unimpressed. - FingersMckenzie, on 02/02/2008, -0/+9You FAIL!
- praxisseizure, on 02/02/2008, -0/+8Just think, capturing 4K Film HD, with just 2 of these in a RAID-0. Hello tapeless theatre quality cinema.
- samssf, on 02/02/2008, -2/+9*fap* *fap* *fap*
- geminitojanus, on 02/02/2008, -0/+7Flash is non-volatile in the sense that when the power goes away, the data persists. Of course, a surge could damage the device, but it would just as soon damage any hard disk controller as well, so that argument's pretty silly. As for wear and tear, it's a solved problem in larger arrays (SSDs), but it will be an apparent problem if you're only using one or two of these chips (especially with such high sustained read/write rates). It's likely for the time being that these will be gobbled up by SSD companies rather than e.g. Apple, as the failure rate would simply be unacceptable in those devices.
(not to say it'd be totally inappropriate, but 3-5 years instead of 10+ years is a bit harder to sell to your generic Joe consumer).
Still, this is where the storage market is heading, and this is a massive improvement over what we've got now in speed. - dawgma, on 02/02/2008, -0/+7Yeah, but you don't have anything close to the access times. In fact, since your drives are set up in a RAID, you have most likely LOWER access times than a single hard drive.
And if you don't see what the benefit of faster access times are.. then you don't need to worry yourself with flash drives any time soon. - samssf, on 02/02/2008, -0/+7I love my MBP but think the Air is pretty much worthless... Still I have to persuade my friends not to buy one, because they think it's the newest, coolest Mac laptop.
-_- - cheesefan, on 02/02/2008, -0/+7Memory is like sex, it's better when you don't have to fake it.

- praxisseizure, on 02/02/2008, -0/+6This (when it becomes cheaper) will finally kill the tape and deck forever in Hi Def. Heck it'll go all the way to 4k Digital Film. The implications for digital video production are immeasurable. It would change the whole game in hardware. Hope it becomes more durable as well.
- crombat, on 02/02/2008, -0/+6Press release from Intel:
http://www.intel.com/pressroom/archive/releases/20 ... - inactive, on 02/02/2008, -0/+6What?
- Azerael, on 02/02/2008, -1/+6Maybe if AMD made some good CPUs again people would actually buy them?
- rkuchiki, on 02/02/2008, -2/+7http://www.micron.com/products/nand/high_speed/ind ...
looks like its still 100,000 write cycles. It's not bad, but lets try improving that next.
Although, the plus side with NAND is, if the device containing the NAND has proper error control, you won't lose data when the write cycles die. Or at least such is my experience with a PlayStation 1 memory card. - slezzzter, on 02/02/2008, -0/+5That's not really a "plus side with NAND." An error control code is equally effective for any storage medium. I suppose a code could be optimized for mediums prone to specific types of errors. But, even you're suggesting that the device records all error corrections and adjust byte addressing to avoid the dead bits, the system could be applied to any medium.
- superjunaid, on 02/02/2008, -3/+8I'm getting this installed in my MacBook Pro next, and as StitchedUp mentioned.. in RAID!
- chingy1788, on 02/02/2008, -2/+6koala
cause there are no bear species native to Australia
and koalas sleep alot - alittleroy101, on 02/02/2008, -1/+5So no one's going to answer his question, just bury him into oblivion. Why?
- blackjack75, on 02/02/2008, -0/+4For some reason the MacBook Air is the topseller on many European online AppleStores (Switzerland, Germany, France ...) but doesn't even show up in the top 7 list on the U.S. Apple.com store. I guess almost no-one in the U.S. cares (which, for once seem reasonable).
- gh0st3000, on 02/02/2008, -0/+4As far as I'm concerned, the best part about brand new tech is that it makes last year's brand new tech dirt cheap.
- geminitojanus, on 02/02/2008, -0/+3That's not bad for a first generation product, though at that fast of a read/write rate, you're much more likely to hit bad blocks. Give it a few more generations for the kinks to work out and they'll be back in the millions range again. Or just bond the device to a few more chips and span the file system (as the error rate falls off as the density increases).
- RockinRoel, on 02/02/2008, -0/+3How can you put it in a RAID if a MacBook Pro only has space for 1 HD? You could replace the optical drive, but that would be stupid. A MacBook Pro is really full. There's no place for anything in there. Not even for a third USB port or an expresscard 54 slot :-(.
- colto, on 02/02/2008, -0/+3Because it will even fit in the blender...
- skamp, on 02/02/2008, -0/+3The 8 gigabit/1 gigabyte figure is just for one chip. Flash drives and SSDs have more than one.
- mrsteveman1, on 02/02/2008, -1/+4"Vote with your wallet" is compete crap and will not work unless better products exist from other manufacturers. People don't buy inferior products just to stick it to the other company, and neglecting to buy good products doesn't affect anyone but the purchaser, the company never suffers because they have good products that almost always win out in competition against poor products.
AMD can fix all this by getting off their ass and making good chips again, to suggest that anything else will hit Intel is ridiculous. - mrsteveman1, on 02/03/2008, -0/+2It's ok son, show me on the motherboard where the bad chipmaker hurt you
- inactive, on 02/02/2008, -1/+3"trust me, people care a lot about the air. i was at the apple 5th ave store...."
First of all, the grammatical errors in that quote alone are more annoying than not, since they are more or less due to laziness. At least capitalize correctly man! You won't seem like a half retarded fourteen year old that way and as an extra bonus your basic intelligence will be raised, if only in the opinions of others.
Secondly. Well no ***** *****. Your at an Apple store! So of course there are going to be sub-human fanboys jacking off over the latest Apple product.
Fanboys ≠ People, therefore people do not care about the Air. Its very pretty, I agree, but its an overpriced novelty item for fanboys and your more wealthy designer types. Why do I say this? Because for either a little bit more or for almost half the price you can get either the macbook pro or the macbook. Both of which will out preform the air in specs and features at the cost of only being slightly thicker, but still remaining very slim and very portable.
People need to stop going goo goo gah gah over the air. Its ultra thin. So what? I admit, its very cool and is most definitely pretty and/or sexy. But when it comes down to it, its just not a good deal. Now of course, like I said, if your wealthier than most people or if you like to save up your hard earned money for maimed products, good deals don't really matter. Too bad I also consider those types of people to also be "sub-human" and not worthy of being associated with the rest of the human species. :) - geminitojanus, on 02/02/2008, -0/+2Phones, cameras, embedded device firmwares, the list goes on and on. The interesting thing will be to see what MLC variants are capable of (in both density and speed).
- Akronos, on 02/02/2008, -1/+3"YOU'RE* at an Apple store!"
- inactive, on 02/02/2008, -0/+2Meh, I'll actually give it until the end of the year or the beginning of next year to be more affordable. It will still be expensive, but not so much as it is now. I would say maybe around the price of five hundred dollars for the current models at this rate. They only just came out not too long ago and already we are seeing them placed in consumer products which tells me that these are going to be something that many companies will start to invest in. That almost always drives the price down, maybe not to what current hdd's are, but affordable never the less.
- inactive, on 02/02/2008, -1/+3It doesnt have Apples stamp on it, it would never work with OSX anyway !
- inactive, on 02/02/2008, -0/+2Sorry by the way, I didn't mean to digg you down. I was going to digg you up, if only for being rightfully unimpressed with the "air", but my mouse spasmed right when I clicked and it ended up moving over slightly to the wrong button. :(
- LetsGoHawks, on 02/02/2008, -1/+3And we wouldn't be reading your *****.
- MusicalGenius, on 02/02/2008, -4/+5I'm very enthusiastic really. Usually I'm not all out "I won't accept the other side as a possibility" I'm generally more open. I just can't stand things Intel has done.
Check this out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Micro_Device ...
It's not really entirely accurate but VERY close to the ball.
I understand business. Intel uses monopolistic ways of getting companies not to use AMD processors. I just have a lot of problems with the company. I think some of their products(mainly their research, is REALLY cool stuff as well as AMD's) are cool but the company is out for me.
Apple is the same way. I like (not love, honestly) some of their product line, but Steve Jobs I really don't care for all too much.
I don't mind businesses making mistakes even. I REALLY understand that people to make dumb decisions. Intel just does nothing to try to fix their past and they keep getting caught doing worse things. This is my problem with Intel. - iamawesome12, on 02/02/2008, -1/+2After seeing this arrogant comment I had to join Digg! lmao! I do not have the best grammar in this world, however, I would not criticize someone in it (or anything else) if I could not use it correctly myself.
