- SuperRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This headline is not technically correct. Windows Vista will not "require" a new monitor for anything other than viewing high-def content in it's native resolution, and then only if a protected file. Standard monitors will display everything else just fine. I fail to see the news story here ... pirates would just compress the content that they're looking to protect anyway.
- f1gm3nt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1screw windows, once you go Linux you won't go back =)

- bigred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To correct SuperRob, it's not for High Def content, it's for Digital Protected content, I.E. stuff with DRM. None of the stuff you get on bit torrent or on most sites will be DRM encoded.

"i switch to linux"
It does'nt make any difference. You can't play these DRM files in those operating systems either. Unless they build in support for it which will have you at the same place that Vista does, using an HDCP monitor.
There is just no way around it and switching to a different OS isn't going to change that. Those files won't play in OSX and they won't play in Linux. Not at all. Your only hope of getting those files to play is in Vista with an HDCP monitor. Blame the people that release media with DRM. It's them that are screwing you. - vdub12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why the hell would this make it to the front page.
I think people will digg anything - bleutuna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Though the headline is off, the concept of disabling a monitor probably won't come to frution in my opinion. Otherwise, Micrsoft is shooting themselves in the foot.
Prediction: OSX for PC and WindowsVista will release at the same time, with OSXPC $99 versus $199 for WindowsVista.
MS will be in trouble. - Vst_kills, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Windows IS a step in the wrong direction
- billpoly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is old news and the headline is completely misleading.
- vdub12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is very old news.
If you don't like it don't use windows. - _Caboose_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm confident that someone will disable it with a hack, or find a way around it. But it's still a stupid move on Microsoft's part, even if it only affects a small portion of video files.
- nova_rock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if it isnt scrapped - 99.9% likley
then it'll probably be for the vista ultimate ed which has all of subscriptions to streaming media and drm ripping of audio/video content - CompIsMyRx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DVD John will have this hacked in under a week.
- liquidice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You guys will believe anything you see in a headline. This was reported quite some time ago. Vista WILL NOT "require" a new monitor. You will be able to use the computer as you would any other computer. However, if you want to view content with DRM, then you will need a new monitor. But most of the things that you download will not have DRM. So read a little more before you start yelling "Microsoft sucks, Vista sucks."
- SirSid, on 05/27/2009, -0/+0Every day M$ does something like this it makes me want to try out linux a little more...
- auricomnet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0screw windows, once you go Mac you won't go back =)
- UnlivedPhalanx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was starting to love MS cuz of the 360,
but seriously a new monitor? thats *****. - Ace113, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this was already reported when the system specs were leaked a few days ago
- ProAm500, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Old flame material....this isnt true as well as very old news, as well as a dupe...please guys get this from the front page....
- archer75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Keep in mind that this DRM stuff cannot be viewed on Linux or OSX either. So it's not just a Microsoft thing it's how people want to distribute thier media.
Microsoft is just building a way in for it to be viewed. - KaZe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe...but the beta seemed perfect with a regular monitor
note: I do not personally have the beta. - archer75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Again, regular monitors work just fine. This ONLY applies to media that is specifically encoded with DRM. Microsoft does'nt have control over this. Anyone can encrypt thier media to make you have to deal with this.
So if you don't view DRM encrypted media there is nothing to worry about. Nothing will change for you. - w33n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they took all the useful stuff out of vista and left in all the garbage.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0does microsoft know that know one is going to get vista?
- rousehouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Old news, misleading headline, and it will never happen.
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"screw windows, once you go Linux you won't go back =)"
HAHAHAHAHA
Yeah. I just tried to use Linux for a week and it sucked ass.
And this article is a guestimate. - nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0either way, there will be a hack for this.
- Smokezz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There will be an adapter box you can put in between your nice 24 in Dell (and mine too...) and your computer to get around this too...guarenteed.
- Abyss_908, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That sucks.
- speel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good bye bill gates hello steve jobs
- lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Screw windows? Easier said than done. Windows itself is a huge dependency for most programs, if you know what I mean :).
Oh wait, that isn't good. :( - jiub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Old news but still important.
digg - miketuck3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0there is no way this will be scrapped it is down to the movie studios insisting on it for HD-DVD and blue ray
- chris86wm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmm..i dont think this is gonna happen. microsoft may be a ***** company but they are not this dumb. im not worried...i switch to linux
- JRMillion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I doubt this will end up happening...
that said, if it does, I agree a hack of some kind will appear. - rcomegys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"'screw windows, once you go Mac you won't go back =)'
Unless you want to play Battlefield 2."
DUDE, you nailed it right there. The only reason I don't go Mac. That and the expense. And the lack of upgradability. - woodyear99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah most people don't download DRM stuff anyway so this great "feature" is quite pointless to the average user :p
- craterburnsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just another reason why i will stick to using my Gentoo box.
- clumsyninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No one hase to use this stuff. I sure as hell will not.
- jholdaway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well this doesn't apply to all the people with non High Def Monitors. So relax as your DMR protected content will work fine on your monitor as you (And I) Will not be buying HD media content for our computers.
(Not that I often buy media content other than audio for my iPod.) - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if true wouldnt this be in Beta 1 already through an update? Hell M$ doesnt even know if there goin to do this! ITS IN BETA STUFF WILL CHANGE!!! There is no reason to start F|_|ckin your Linux/Mac moms yet!
- recon16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0one word: *****
- moiety, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How did this completely erroneous item make it to the homepage? Sigh.
- the_d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jesus christ, you people are retarded. It's THE INQUIRER! Not to be taken seriously.
- rewritable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0heres what you gotta do..... DONT BUY MEDIA THAT REQUIRES THE DRM! Hit'em where it hurts. I dont buy DVDs, VHSs, or music now and this crap wont make me start either. Someone somwhere will have a work around for this retarded DRM stuff, all the media distributors are doing is wasting time and losing money and blaming it on pirates.
- jholdaway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL, Uninformed people.. Reminds me of those forwarded emails starting with "Can you believe that..."
Well The implementation will be in not only the player software (Windows Media Vista in this case) but in the file as well so sorry to those who thought they could stick with Windows XP and play files protected with HDCP. (Personally I will be supporting non-corporate, HDCP-free files) - Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I will not purchase DRM protected content requiring me to also buy a new monitor, since my $60 crt does quite a good job
- halc5s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A. The Inquirer is a rag, just like The Register
B. The title is misleading, you wont NEED a new montior unless you wish to watch hi-def content in its native format
Are all the /. trolls finding their way over to Digg? - itjamesd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0leave it to dvd jon and we will be digging news on him cracking it
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Prediction: OSX for PC and WindowsVista will release at the same time, with OSXPC $99 versus $199 for WindowsVista.
In your dreams, Osx will never be out on pc and Vista is $99. Besides do you really think apple will sell osx for $99 on pc? Come on, they charge too much for their products. -
