- Parks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love how Microsoft is doing this rediculous hardware requirement "upgrade" at the same time that Apple is lowering the price on all their equipment. At the same time they are changing the user interface in Office. Put these 2 thing together... I think we are seeing the last days of Microsoft. Unix is better anyway. Go MAC OS!
- k3n85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I better be able to run HL2 as the desktop background or something with that story. Maybe they're playing a DVD as the background, or constantly doing editing, cry me a river w/ an OS that need 256, peace out cheap compaqs/hp/dell/e-machine
- meta87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What is vista doing that requres that much gpu ram? I mean I run BF2 on a 6600gt 128 mb ram just fine. So vista is is going to be more graphically intensive that one of the lastest pc games? Great.
- 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is kind of funny - I doubt seriously that most PC users are going to rush out and buy a new video card just to run Vista.
- bacon_skoda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so it's like Tiger but more bloated?
- saggygrandma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It will boost all sales hardware, thats what bloatware does...
- mercury81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like this because it will kill off this crappy onboard graphics BS that Intel has been doing for so long.
- TheChillPill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think what alot of people forget is that when people come out with things like this - it's for *optimum* performance. It was the same with XP when that came out - you needed a beefy card to run that properly (at the time). If anything, with things like using a USB memory key to boost performance, a system running XP now will probably run Windows Vista faster in a similar config (i.e not using the aero stuff etc). Run them both in 'classic mode' and Vista will probably be faster.
- nonokiaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bring on WINFS!
However, I'm not too unhappy with current indexing.
PS Yeah, 6600gt here too. Runs fine! - trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The average consumer is going to consider buying vista, then find out that they have to upgrade hardware, and then think to themselves... my xp is running fine, why would I need to upgrade anyway. And eventually they will buy a whole new system and the problem is solved. I think it will help sales of new PCs the most, as long as it doesn't become another Me.
- djcoolmax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01GB of ram to run Vista smoothly? Crazy man....
- anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0"so it's like Tiger but more bloated?"
and with less than half the features and a nice spaghetti code underneath instad of a UNIX/BSD foundation :P - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Simple. NO. It might boost PC sales because it is so powerful than older ones.
- spytromics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jarrod: there is no additional cost for governments and most corporations to upgrade to Windows Vista. Vista will be part of the Software Assurance licensing model.
- Chamunks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I dont think people understand when they post this crap promoting vista that noone wants to buy more shinier expensive ***** when the stuff we have is more than sufficient i mean honnestly i dont want to be forced to buy a 256 meg video card just to run the damn operating system thats stupid i want something that will run on like an 8 meg video card and i want the rest of the gpu dedicated to my damn games u fools can i kick u square in the nuts now or when they release this damn poop
LINUX HURRY THE POOP UP WE WANT A GAMING MACHINE OS FAST - Magallanes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Remember the days pre xp?, when everyone whinning about "to run xp you will need a 1ghz pc?".. the facts is xp run really fine even in a old 400mhz pc , the trick was to put more memory.
- ericpp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I guess one good thing that will come out of this is computer manufacturers will have to start bundling better graphics cards with their systems.
- archer75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The reason it needs more video card power is for two things. One, all desktop graphics and been moved from the CPU in Windows XP to the GPU in Vista. And they added alot of eye candy and effects as well.
Overall it runs much much faster. - pillfred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That is the dumbest shat. I too second the notion for optimization not over complication as seems to be the case today. And FFS windows is not going any ware anytime soon so give up.
- elShaggy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea, a new OS release SHOULD make the older machines run better. i would think thats the idea, keep requirements low with increased speed and new features to increase sales. But thats just what i think.
- Jarrod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Spytromics: Software Assurance: How is this no additional cost?
from http://www.infoworld.com/article/05/09/15/HNvistasoftassurance_1.html
The program has been a controversial one and met with considerable resistance after some analysts said customers would end up paying more under Software Assurance than under the previous licensing plan.
It appears now that Microsoft is not just encouraging customers to use the program but requiring them to, at least if they want access to its newest products, analysts said. - Sixcolors, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 Screw Vista; I'll be running XP for a long while. And like anyone will upgrade their video cards for that. The next FPS is more likely to cause a mass exodus of video cards. Or perhaps if Morrowind IV is released on PC.
- Sixcolors, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Or is it Elder Scrolls IV?... the title has always confused me.
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is because of Trusted Computing. I hate DRM. :( I will not buy a Trusted Comptuing PC, or any cards that are related.
- 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hate capitalism as much as the next guy but isn't this the perfect example of how the market works? MS scratches Nvidia/Ati's back and they return in kind.
- gunnmjk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Of course it runs smoothly on 256MB of VRAM. Any computer would run smoothly! The article says nothing about Vista NOT running smoothly with less than 256MB of VRAM, does it?
- meta87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0*then
- eod_punk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0You know Windows XP runs very smooth with 256mb ram on my video card. How about putting some information out there that is helpful like when i tried to run vista with the onboard Intel graphics card it wouldn't run. This article was just more useless info from the worthless wide web. Next thing you know Dodge will let us know that their cars they run in Nascar work great for going to the store as well.
- Jarrod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Why in God's name would the damn OS ever need that much graphics horsepower? Looks like Vista may be like Everquest II, so hardware intensive that no one buys or uses it.
On the other hand, imagine the cost if all of our tax dollars go to upgrading every government computer's OS to Vista. Not to mention that the computers will all have to be upgraded to the latest models. All so the secretary can write emails and make letters in Word. Sometimes I think we live in Bizarro-World.
