£1071.99 or $2,005.69 - Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I've worked with the DLINK equivalent - http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=2&pid=434
I sure hope that the 3Com version of the Trapeze Technology works better than DLINK's does. The DLINK system STINKS and I won't use it again.
At least 3Com gives you the option to get Ringmaster, and if you don't you're an idiot of the first order.
Also note, that while the unit can POWER any compatible 802.3af compliant device it can only MANAGE two specific models of 3COM WAPs.
I have found the 3CRWE776075 (3Com 7760) to be an excellent WAP, and priced rather well, but there is still the whole vendor lock-in angle to consider.
I'm happy to see something like this added to 3Com's product line, but it isn't nearly as easy to work with, cool, or flexible as you'd like it to be. - scrytch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@HappyScrappy,
The 802.3af standard supports two ways to provide power - one is to use the unused pairs which you are referring to, the other is to in essence mux the power alongside the data.
When using Gig PoE, the 2nd variant is used.
Regards,
Shane. - Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oh, if anyone is curious.
My largest implementation, to date, with the 3Com 7760s was a hotel/convention center where I used 19 of them WITHOUT the 'master control' switches that 3Com offers.
My largest implementation, to date, with the DLINK DWS-1008 was another hotel/convention center where I used 20 of the DWL-8220APs and two of the DWS-1008.
If you're serious about this stuff go directly to Trapeze, which is who DLINK and 3COM are licensing this technology from, and work with them. - teshia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The price seems pretty good to me. HP Procurve 10/100 24 port switches with power over ethernet cost around $1800 and that doesn't even include wireless and voip features! $2000 sounds like a steal. I want one.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9But does it scratch your balls and make you dinner?
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2GigE uses all 4 pairs of wires in a cable. I didn't think PoE was possible with GigE. Anyone explain how it works?
- culbeda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nice specs, but I'm not wild about the layout. The needless density of connectors on the right is off-putting from a cable management standpoint.
And I'm not a fan of building in wireless into a managed switch w/ VoIP if for no other reason than that I will almost certainly replace my wireless long before I replace that switch.
...3Com is still in business. Good for them. - teshia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1True, but they're offering the features for a lot less than Cisco does, which is a nice perk for people who can't afford the nicer Cisco hardware.
- gollo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It doesn't have wireless builtin it just manages wireless access points (keeps people off internal network until they are authenticated, etc etc)
- stuffhappens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If your needs are simpler and you're on a budget, There's the Netgear ProSafe FS108P
It's a 10/100 switch with 8 ports, 4 of which do PoE (Power Over Ethernet) - approx £70 each so not a bad price for a small office with PoE VoIP phones - mix up a few of these and a wireless access point in a small office environment and still have change from £250. - smcavoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1oh ***** it died.
There goes the network.
:) - osiris123d, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Cisco already had this product out. This is no new idea.
