- merreborn, on 06/19/2009, -3/+24Makes perfect sense. Why buy a laptop battery, which could offer you thousands of hours of utility, when you can buy a dinner, which you'll be able to enjoy for at least 30 minutes?
- brisketplease, on 06/19/2009, -1/+22oh but you're just not right! batteries are clearly not useless. they allow you use your computer when it's not plugged in.
- babyheadout, on 06/19/2009, -0/+19My 5 year old iBook's battery life plummeted to 1 minute of life a couple years ago, so I just keep it plugged in at all times, which has worked fine for my work/lifestyle.
In the few times I've been tempted to replace it, I just convert that temptation into a fancy dinner out. - merreborn, on 06/19/2009, -1/+20When I'm on the road, I turn my screen brightness down as far as possible, kill any apps I don't absolutely need, and turn off wifi if I'm not actively using it.
So these tests aren't necessarily that far off from reality. What they really oughta do is offer two numbers, much like car efficiency is advertised as both "city" and "highway" mileage.
Give me a minimum and a maximum: how many hours would I get, reading a text file in notepad with the brightness down, and how many hours would I get playing a 3D game at full brightness? - cheez124, on 06/19/2009, -8/+26I'm sick of Gizmodo, their writers need a serious reality check lately.
- anexanhume, on 06/19/2009, -1/+17From what, goblins? I don't see the point in this. The battery will automatically degrade with age, regardless of whether you cycle it even once.
- Goombellaofgoom, on 06/19/2009, -0/+13That sounds about rig
- dkarimi, on 06/19/2009, -2/+13I'm still waiting for wireless energy to go mainstream.
- ml4rocky, on 06/19/2009, -2/+12I've learned the hard way how useless the batteries are. I even used to buy a spare. Not anymore.
- MxM111, on 06/19/2009, -0/+9Automatically degrade you say? Yeah, sure... But what about goblins?
- NathanielJ, on 06/19/2009, -1/+10Yeah, we got that you're a troll already. Go away.
- shortricekid, on 06/19/2009, -2/+10The paper clip holder in the picture looks like a penis.
- blapierre, on 06/19/2009, -1/+8A fully charged, hot battery will degrade MUCH faster than a partially charged cool battery.
I had a Dell Inspiron about 6 years ago. After about half a year it couldn't stay on for more than a minute when unplugged. This is because I left it on 24/7 and the outside case near the battery was probably 120F most of the time. - babyheadout, on 06/19/2009, -0/+5I certainly checked, though my AppleCare at the time didn't cover batteries.
- puppyoneb, on 06/19/2009, -3/+8I would comment but my battery is about to...
- sickbag69, on 06/19/2009, -1/+6Really?? Wow. I also once heard the same story on both CNN and Fox. Then I read the same story again on Google news. WTF is that all about?
- Fozefy, on 06/19/2009, -1/+5Ya, I don't really understand where you're going here. What do I do when I'm on a bus ride? Plane ride? When I'm in a class room that doesn't have plugs at every other seat? etc...
Not use my laptop? But I thought that was what it was for 8) - Konrad9, on 06/19/2009, -2/+6Dinner is so much more worth it.
- xxl3w, on 06/19/2009, -1/+5not much better there. 98% of their articles are about cell phones.
- HamNCheese, on 06/19/2009, -1/+5This is news?
Seriously - read a proper review if you are concerned about battery life. - cheez124, on 06/19/2009, -2/+6just look at the front page, loving the iphone, hating the iphone, complaining about 3G when a lot of the country doesn't even have it, and its such a apple centric blog, I know this has nothing to do with battery claims, but I think I'm going to read Engadget for a few months.
- Gerz1219, on 06/20/2009, -0/+3It would be nice if they offered something a little more honest, but I'm not sure it's necessary. This disconnect has existed for so long across every lithium-ion powered gadget that by now we all know real-world battery life is about 60% of the advertised time, dropping to about 40-50% after a year. I find this is so consistent across products that the advertised time is actually useful as a metric. A "6-hour" laptop battery will last me about twice as long as a "3-hour" battery, regardless of who's selling it.
- Jade10145, on 06/19/2009, -1/+4Perhaps the issue is with your keyboard??
- kanningt, on 06/20/2009, -0/+3I think it's just you, you know? You know what I mean?
- lcworld, on 06/19/2009, -1/+4Laptop battery life claims are based on the lcd turned down in brightness, and reading text, and a brand new battery. If there's wifi, heavy computing, LCD to the brightest, time for use is only about 60 %. So a 5 hr batt lasts approx. 3 hrs, a 3 hr batt lasts 1hr40mins. If DVD is playing/burning, speakers are on, external hard drive is spinning, the time is even less.
Lithium Ion is the norm. To totally discharge and store your battery , thinking it will be like new is the worst thing you can do to the battery. Keep the batt. attached, and discharge about 20% regularly(daily, 3 times a week) is the best way to maintain long batt life. If you store your laptop for more than 3 months without using, charge the batt to approx. 50% , not 100% and definitely not 0%. - brisketplease, on 06/19/2009, -1/+4how so?
- mdman, on 06/19/2009, -0/+2I hate writers that have to use others content to make a story.. they are too lazy to write it? have to use a hyperlink?
write your own story, if you use others work than give them credit, but at least take the time to type the stupid story.. it was not worth visiting 3 sites to ready your lame battery story - yacks, on 06/20/2009, -0/+2That is why I always hated when customers asked "How long will this battery last on a full charge?" when I was in computer sales.. I'd tell them 2-3 hours on most.. and then they'd gasp and expect them to last 12 hours..
- rpgmakr, on 06/20/2009, -0/+2Last place? Below Fox News?
- dkarimi, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2Sorry. I'm a philosophy major.
- whatit, on 06/19/2009, -2/+4I heard that you are an expert doctor in science and programming. Preese take me as your student!
- cowsgonemadd3, on 06/19/2009, -0/+2Super good idea there.
- kanningt, on 06/20/2009, -0/+2...it's Gizmodo. What do you expect?
- CoD4, on 06/19/2009, -1/+3cnn is the last place you should go for news
- BossKey, on 06/19/2009, -5/+7Apple tends to go the other way, they under-estimate and let people be pleasantly surprised. It started with the iPod (the nano I think), where recently Apple would claim a certain number of hours, and reviewers would try it and then report that their battery life was actually longer than the Apple estimate.
It has continued with the new MacBook Pros. Apple claims "7 hours wireless productivity," which unlike the tests Gizmodo complains about, involves wireless actually being turned on, and brightness at 50% (not 20%). I have now read at least four reviews where reviewers got 8+ hours of life under similar conditions, including Anandtech, LaptopMag.com, and Macworld. - ThraxyWaxy, on 06/20/2009, -0/+1Mine started at 40-50%, stupid laptop lol.
- crazzy88ss, on 06/20/2009, -1/+2I get 5 hours out of my macbook with brightness down and wifi browsing on... and it's rated for 5 hours... *shrug*
- dawger, on 06/20/2009, -0/+1I love how there are people out there who cripple their machine in order to get a longer battery life. Turn off wifi. Dim screen. Close apps. So basically dont use the machine.
People are like it with their smart phones too! - crazzy88ss, on 06/20/2009, -0/+1Or just saying Apple's battery claim is accurate...?
- cuoops, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/06/17/why-cant- ...
- inactive, on 06/20/2009, -0/+1Make one. The plans are all over the Internet. It is open source since the patent was from Tesla. Even You tube has videos
- brisketplease, on 06/22/2009, -0/+1solid point. i hadn't thought of that.
- kanningt, on 06/20/2009, -0/+1Thank you.
- TdotFUNK, on 06/21/2009, -0/+1Youtube has videos!?
- kanningt, on 06/20/2009, -1/+2don't waste my/your time by commenting before reading.... bad internet etiquette
- puppyoneb, on 06/22/2009, -0/+1*now following NathanielJ on Twitter*
- BossKey, on 06/20/2009, -0/+1I don't get it either. Here we have an example of one company who doesn't oversell battery life, where reviewers and users routinely get *more* battery life than the company promises, and people bury the comment. What's that all about? You're all like "We strongly prefer to be disappointed by companies who lie about battery life?" That's lame.
I guess it just goes to prove the theory that the only thing more pathetic than an Apple fanboy, is an Apple hateboy. -
