- spudge, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22Not necessarily. One could simply be a pyro that prefers only high quality, reliable equipment for setting fire to large flamable objects.
And it does look strikingly similar to a zippo, so it is a fair comparison. - tHePeOPle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13maverick999, you crying about dupes, is a dupe.
- svidrod, on 10/12/2007, -9/+19no, a zippo is a fairly well known object throughout american culture, whether you are a smoker or not, and even if he is, why do you care?
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14I've never touched a cigarette in my life, and I own two Zippo lighters... but that's because of my nickname - people thought they would be ironic gifts. XD
- MattH, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11now a Hard drive mod in a zippo case would be cool .
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Spam? Submitter seems to submit many stories from designtechnica.com
Also noticed a pattern of him and a username wh0pper being the only one digging/commenting on each others stories. Both of them do a lot of submitting for designtechnica. - sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Mine quit working when I tried to fill it with lighter fluid :(
- nadnerb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7for one thing, ipod's file system can't handle files larger than 2GB
- boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Western Digital. Combination drive head and flint?
- Asten77, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Submitter is aware that using the symbol $ negates the need to use the word "dollars", right?
- grendel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why is this news?
I own a Memorex 8GB traveldrive the size of a pack of matches that I bought 2 months ago.
$99 office depot after rebate.
http://www.trustedreviews.com/images/article/inline/2651-3.jpg - jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4only 3600rpm though :(
- h4lofourt33n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Design wise, this isn't very good. The concept of having 6 gigs in that small of a device rocks. I might have to pick one up! Cool story, sucks for the dupe though.
- UnderLoK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I would break this thing in a week. Mobility, moving parts, and compact design result in a $130 accident waiting to happen.
- INHUMANITY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not impressed. Like the user above I got myself a 4GB drive for $150'ish about two months ago. They keep getting cheaper and cheaper. Smaller too.
- bryancharles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3is it me or is this just not very impressive?
- donaldgelman, on 10/12/2007, -14/+16 ... but does it run linu . . .sorry, wrong site.
- SuicideInvoice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ever dropped a microdrive? It's scary. You don't even feel safe just having them loose in your camera bag. Also, there are a lot of buried comments in here. For me, if something gets dugg into submission, i have to click on it to see why it was -dugg. kinda ironic.
- JasonPrini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yep, I have the same set up. $10 case and $80 60GB 2.5 drive. Works great.
You can even get some enclosures that do media decoding as well, so you can hook it up to a TV with S-Video or RCA jacks and browse/play your pictures, movies, and music via a remote. These tend to cost a bit more but are still really cheap - tmcleroy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4dude, its not that amazing i have a 923859023745902608189709894085902857 terabyte drive thats the size of my penis. (about 1 inch by 1 inch)
- spectrum21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First time I read the headline, I thought it said Hippo...I thought what the hell? LOL
- manveru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yep. and im also tired of hearing about 30GB when the actual storage space equates to like 27.4GB. Its all about marketing to consumer who doesnt understand technical details. Unfortunately its a nessasary evil.
- ThePharaoh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have a 4GB Giga Bank. Works pretty darn well if you ask me...
http://www.iomagic.com/Gigabank/index.asp - demonthises, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would be concerned about how reliable this thing is. I would be afraid that something would get knocked out of alignment WHEN you dropped it. Because a drive this size will be dropped, crushed, and put in a 140 degree car all day long. However, if it offers decent transfer rates, it would be convenient way to take movies with you.
- GIFF3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is anybody else sick of company's saying things can hold "10,000 pictures 4000 songs!!!"?
Those are just arbitrary figures. Each file is a different size, so those numbers are useless. - STDOUBT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=226
"Includes a free rubberized sleeve for additional protection."
hehe -marketdroids... - manveru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ill stick with my my 60GB that is about the size of a pack of smokes. did i mention it plays mp3 and video too.... bonus!
- siddman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Not as cool as Seagate http://www.seagate.com/products/retail/pocket/
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Nice to see Hard Drives come down in (physical) size. Now if only Apple would start selling their Mini's again...
- kwreid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Big fricken deal... a 6GB USB key. Why should I care?
- AngryPenguin47, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2tiny hd's are a terrible investment. period.
- silentvirus, on 10/25/2008, -1/+2definately going to buy this
- DragonQuester, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2that would be a very handy storage device for the revolution. the price isnt bad either.
- Doubledown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sometimes I just feel like people on Digg just search for Dupe articles. My question is who really cares as long as the story, in general, hits the front page
- alchemista, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1These have been out for a while, not much new here except it's slightly smaller. I've had one called the IOMagic Gigabank and they even go up to 8GB.
http://www.iomagic.com/Products/show_all_results.asp?ProdID=IUSB8HD10 - ArchonMagnus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pending the reliability of the drive (i.e. it's low probability for failure) this could be something for those who have issues with the read/write limitations of Flash (1x10^6 read/writes correct?). Maybe if the storage space increases (and you could interface firewire) you could boot a secondary OS off of one of these.
- CingleMolt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0C'mon... How far are we away, really, from 6GB in one of the smaller pack-of-gum-sized USB drives? The size just doesn't impress me. A Creative Zen Micro isn't much larger with 6GB and full MP3 features.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that's sad my first thought was almost "wtf is a zippo" then i remembered
-- Hochy Lora - MyNameIsLee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0all this news of HDD's being shunk down is cool and the tech side of it is really interesting but these small HDD's are for the mobile crowd (in my opinion anyway) and if there are many people like me...you'll lose the little thing on your first trip out the door.
- svidrod, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8seems pretty pointless, considering you can get a 4gb flashdrive which is slightly smaller, and has no moving parts to wear out for only $100 - and thats just going to keep dropping in price
plus i'd be willing to bet that is just one of those compactflash microdrives with a usb convertor built in. - rawstock, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Sorry, but ... yawn ... how is this news? It's a microdrive on a USB2.0 daughtercard. I bought a generic (Emprex) 4-GB version a year and a half ago for $80 (and they're a lot less now) and have a Lacie Carte (8-GB 50% thickess, credit card dimensions otherwise) that I got for even less. Is this news because WD is late to the game? BTW, I took my 4-GB Emprex apart and use the daughter card as a USB compact flash reader; I'm sure it could be fit into an ACTUAL Zippo with any CF card you want (solid state, anyone? hello) ...
- rabidmoose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I agree with spudge. I've got a zippo, and have never smoked. It's just fun to burn things sometimes. Oh, and the fact that you can do tricks with them, or take the workings out of the nifty metal case and put other stuff in there. Think I saw a James Bond-ish camera in a fake zippo one time.
- ajb2015, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Next step - fit 6 gig drive into functioning zippo lighter.
- Ralphy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0spectrum21 said: "First time I read the headline, I thought it said Hippo...I thought what the hell? LOL",
I would like to see a flash drive shapped like a hippo, in my opinion, that would be a lot more interesting then a "zippo", which isn't that impressive since i've seen smaller products that held up to 10gigs. - MetalRemains, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A coworker got the iomega version of this and loves it.
I keep one of just about every type of usb drive in the office for emergencies.
We use them to deploy images when we install servers and clients. - vprice509, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0...yeah, OK, I guess I deserved my negative diggage. My snide comment was not called for. So back to the subject at hand - what I REALLY want in a drive is a 10 gig + flash drive that takes the place of my laptop HDD. (I know, it is coming from Samsung and, no doubt, others...but I want that NOW!)
- HEXUS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice how the people screaming this was a dupe got modded down. Arstechnica employees digging their own stories again?
- hellbus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bah! Just buy a Rio Carbon, if you can find them!
- BobbyOnions, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not trolling here, but I didn't know what a Zippo was. Believe it or not, digg can be read from countries other than the USA.
If you'd said "cigarette lighter" or "box of matches", I'd have been happy. - paulc201, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Dupe, no digg.
