- raccettura, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Now remember how close that head actually is to the platter.
Just hair percision off... and your data is lossed.
Watching this video just makes me say... BACKUP.
Amazing how we dangle our data off the edge of a cliff eh? - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9he clearly stated it was an old noisy harddrive (that he wouldnt use to actually store data).. and then he warned that opening an HD while running it would probably ***** the ***** out of it. (but not in those words)
he said modern hard disks are too quiet to be interesting.. - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9It's kinda hypnotizing when you watch it. Also, this is the first time I've ever seen a hard drive actually do what it does, and it's pretty amazing
Awesome story, this deserves tons of diggs - CLIFFosakaJAPAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5When you really stop and think about it; HDDs are so 20th Century. All those moving parts that can go wrong. Bring on the Holographic Laser Storage Plates....
- ErikPersson, on 07/21/2008, -1/+4youtube.com mirror http://youtube.com/watch?v=XTtajZx_2r8
- aaronlidman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4mirrored: http://media.putfile.com/HD-Motion
- HiddenForce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Haha, video brought to us by "INT 13."
(For those unfamiliar with INT 13, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/INT_13 ) - kkbeach93, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6you got less diggs because of how you named it.
- Aooogah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What I found interesting about it is how the head moved so fast it looked like it was being shot using a time-lapse camera. Other times it looked like a stop motion animation.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Heh. that's interesting. But can anyone else imagine "domo arigato mr. roboto" playing in the background with this?
- MrSpontaneous, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3dugg.
(but the video clip could've been a minute shorter... I mean, come on...) - captaindan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That dude is a wearing a calculator watch.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It sounds like every Iomega drive I've ever encountered
- DellMan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6it was on digg a while ago
- lerch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3So thats what all that clicking is :P
I'ave taken apart hard drives before....and fried a bunch :P But I've never seen one in action while running. Neat
+Digg - hardran3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah, because you could tell the difference by looking at it on a low res low fps wmv video. Or even in person for that matter.
- Jamezes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It looks like it's having a siezure.
- izzybomb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ah, what a glorious way to destroy a HD. Much better than just throwing it away.
- CLIFFosakaJAPAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yep, Samsung Drives are notoriously noisy. I've heard of stories of Samsung reps (spies) shipping over a "boatload" of Drives to Korea from Japan from all the top Drive Manufacturers (especially Toshiba Drives), to reverse engineer but they just can't seem to get it right.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dang the site is still up.
- fletchowns, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This would be a lot cooler with a drive that had an impressive seek time...not some 8 year old piece of *****.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1anyone old enough to remember those programs for the C64 that used to make your 1541 play music by moving the head at different speeds?
LOAD "$",8 baby! - ocntscha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Huh?? Samsung hard drives are a big favorite among Tivo owners because they are so quiet.
- LeFrenzy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1this HD can spin...put him on stage, I bet he can DJ like whoa.
- kcchesnut, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3cant wait for the music video remix
- dotuplink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1cool, but already done it. Not safe, but still cool.
- rongon87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1that's bad ass I've never seen a Hard drive running with the cover off.
- Memx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1sweeeet
- marijuanaman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You think that was cool? How about one in slow motion http://www.engr.colostate.edu/~dga/high_speed_video/#Mechatronics
- coding, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow. I never really thought of that read write head moving that quickly. It is so damn amazing we are able to read an write data at nearly, what 20,000,000,000 bits per second?
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1haha so THATS why we need to defragment our hard drives!
(yeah i know, the hd head was just being controlled by the program) - tw0bit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I actually like your video better... it tells you whats going on and how its works
- doctechnical, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You kids are so easily impressed. When the drive weighs in at several hundred pounds and you can make that bad boy walk across the floor, get back to me.
:) - EvilDr.X, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I think it made me have a seizure
- techromancer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I preferred this video because it actually tells you what the drive is doing, rather than random (but entertaining) clicks and movement. Good find though.
- bonoes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Was going to say the same thing. +digg for nerdy watches.
- Tomholius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i should do that with my new wd harddrive that just broke. Only a year old.
- MyChupacabraRox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is always fun seeing guts but to write a program to work out the drive, I need to do less work and more tinkering...
- KiltedMile, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I second that... I still have the video on my desktop...
- RockLobstah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Sort of cool to see the exact process producing all those obnoxious noises!
- Godric, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5I know, it's just like Star Wars 6 when Darth Vader takes off his mask.
- Dezrik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Wow thats awesome. never seen a hdd in motion.. ive taken a few apart heh
- Cykaos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0He has the program you can download to make your own HD do that... for some reason I don't really want the head on my HD moving like that...
- ErikPersson, on 07/21/2008, -2/+1file factory mirror http://www.filefactory.com/get/f.php?f=2606b69c8657d16c817eb51f
- edysteve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0That is cool I always wanted to take one apart and do that but I never have the time, now i dont have to! Cool find.
- wickmeup, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yeah, it's nifty... but I got bored about half way into the video.
Cool for people who have not seen one in action before. I guess. - ErikPersson, on 07/21/2008, -4/+3and yet yours barely got 10 diggs...
- Sabin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Awesome video, glad I got a chance to see it before it got dug too much
- flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0The only time I have seen the inside of a hard drive is when me and a friend took an ax to an old 20gig.
- capn_caveman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1So that's why my Samsung drives are noisy.
