- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+44Personally I like the rugged timeless designs of Thinkpads.
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18I was about to say that. The Trackpoint is the only decent notebook pointing device ever made. Touchpads just suck ass. People who use touchpads on notebooks just don't know what they are missing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22Yeah, omigosh, Lenovo doesn't have curved space wasting designs with candy painted white colors and uselessly designed keyboards!! I say Steve Jobs should design ALL products to be beautiful only!
- mtxblau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Thinkpads are easily the most recognized and the most highly regarded laptops in the world. They're timeless. The very fact that the design has stayed the same for this many years (and are still popular) says a lot about its design.
My thinkpad 600 has been up and down the eastern seaboard, Uganda and India, fallen on top of, and put at the bottom of a pile of luggage in a rickety autorickshaw, yet still works perfectly (LCD blemishes notwithstanding).
You can read about design decisions here: http://www.lenovoblogs.com/ Very interesting stuff. - Rigbymatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13normally im a proponent of the ZOMG DESIGN school. But Thinkpads have a look, they've stuck to that look, the curved LCD hood, boxy shape, particular shade of greyblack, blue hotkeys, have been the same for years and it works.
- Clevinger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13The Thinkpad look means business, I love it. Speaking of which... where is the X60s tablet?
- NewChar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Can't dig you guys up enough. My productivity is up 500% with a TrackPoint compared to a Touchpad.
- pdrap, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13This is not a Thinkpad. Thinkpads have Trackpoints!
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10My 600E was my first ThinkPad. It lasted YEARS AND YEARS. I am now on my 4th. I have owned the aforementioned 600e, a 560, a T20 and now an A30p.
I have also owed a few Compaq Armadas, a Toshiba Satellite, a Sony Viao and a Gateway. I have also fooled around with Micron and Dell notebooks.
From my experiences, there are only two kinds of Notebooks in the world: ThinkPads, and everything else. Until you use one, you just don't understand. - dohidied, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I used to think the Thinkpad looked old and boring too, but I've come to appreciate its utilitarian styling and its robust components. I have dirty thoughts about getting an old Thinkpad to run Linux on.
- carterman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I'd still opt for a T Series Thinkpad for the keyboard alone.
- stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Let me guess: those who think the thinkpad's look is ugly would rather have this:

For the rest of us who aren't 14 years old, we are not really going for the pimped-out neon lights look. Doesn't really sit too well at business meetings or in front of clients. - pompom246, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Although I agree with the others in their appreciation of the Thinkpad design, nobody else has said it yet, so...
I love my old-school Volvo 240!
I think both products fit the upper echelon of design and functionality. - stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Dell, Gateway, Acer, Apple, Asus... all from China or Taiwan. Your money is going there anyway.
- kremus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4just an FYI, yes non-thinkpads from lenovo can be constructed the same and made cheaper. This is due to the different types of plastics and other materials used. This is no different then dell inspirons vs the latitudes. You will be loosing the reliability and sturdiness. I've owned several t series thinkpads and have very few problems.
- Rigbymatt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5they are very clued in. This isnt a thinkpad, just a mainstream laptop from a laptop company. It's not a thinkpad, therefore it isnt named as such or designed like one.
- smithco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Actually, I still use the a trackpoint even when the mouse is plugged in for the very simple reason that it's right in the keyoard where my hands already are. Being able to switch between pointing and typing with only small hand movements is a huge bonus.
- kremus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I can't agree with you more on the 600 series. Sometimes i wish i could just rip out the guts and upgrade mine. Mine has been going strong for 7 years now.
- XSforMe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The article itself says it: "there is a very clear distinction between the two lines and when you buy a 3000, don't expect a Thinkpad." The 3000 might be a good deal, but at the time being they are along the lane of Toshiba and Dell to me.
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Still waiting for a worthy sub-$999 notebook from Lenovo, Apple or similar..
- Dutchmang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Trackpoint is the difference.... I had a friend and his wife visit on Saturday and was showing him some stuff on my wife's Thinkpad (an R40). He's always had Dells and made me turn on the touchpad. Later I needed something bookmarked on my T41, and he didn't ask me about the touchpad. About ten minutes later he's getting used to the Trackpoint (especially the touch sensitivity, which is unmatched by any other device) and is sold.
Trouble is, he likes the 3000 because it's so small and he likes that for his work. Now I have to tell him it's not a real Thinkpad. D'oh! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I love IBM laptops. I had like 4 different laptops. SONY, TOSHIBA, GATEWAY, and HP, after buying IBM, i realized how much other laptops sucked. The difference in comparisson is like Lexus vs geo metro. Now all my friends are switching and saying the same thing.
I love their business look. They are quiter, much better keypad, nice trackpoint, rugged feel. - ElGuano, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Is the 3000 series really derived from the Thinkpad, as the link suggests? I thought Lenovo's lower-end laptops were their own design, and have been around in Asia under the Lenovo brand long before they purchased IBM's PC business. Where exactly is the Thinkpad heritage in that?
- jshabad00, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Agreed. Worthless without a Trackpoint.
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think you're right, but Lenovo was also manufacturing Thinkpads for IBM before they owned the Thinkpad trademark outright.
- Tysto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm an IBM employee and wanted to remain loyal even after Lenovo took over. But when I bought a ThinkPad this past spring, the rep tricked me into a software rebate deal. Now, I hate rebate scams, but I'm good at following instructions and this was an IBM partner, so I took the deal. This was the most dishonest rebate I've ever seen, with a very tight deadline and complicated demands for ID numbers and proofs-of-purchase. They sent back a form letter rejection card and kept my 70 bucks. Now I'll shop around.
- kremus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5whats with all these stupid lyrics being posted? Drop it dood.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The article says on the first page "don't expect a thinkpad" title is misleading, many features are cut, obviously if you want a thinkpad = BUY A THINKPAD >
- auxplage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thinkpads and Macs are both really beautiful in no particular order:
Thinkpads for their simple, elegant business look and Macs for their cool, industrial design. - foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1most manufacturers don't fail in one area: price.
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Battery life is horrible on this model. The base unit comes with a 3-cell battery, which lasts about 2 hours at most. The 6-cell battery is a $100 option, sticks out of the rear, and doubles the battery life to a (still minuscule) 4-hours, at most. Dell's e1405, which is slightly larger unit with a bigger screen, has battery life of more than 5 hours with the standard 6-cell battery.
If both units have 6-cell batteries, are similarly spec'ed, the Dell has a larger screen and still lasts more than 30% longer, I'd say that Lenovo needs to go back to the drawing board. - inactive, on 09/23/2008, -0/+1mortgage, mortgage rates, refinance, real estate, realty, second mortgage http://tophomemortgageloan.com
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2cheap? apple's macbook is just about a better deal--and that's saying a lot.
- Sonic_Molson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1In my opinion the quality of thinkpads has dropped since Lenovo took over.
My R60's screen randomly stays off sometimes after the "turn off monitor after xx" minutes activates...i have to close/open the lid for it to turn on.
The wireless radio switch feels cheap and is difficult to turn on/off, as well as being hidden so i cannot see if it is on/off (even though it has a green color to indicate it's on, its on the underside of the front ledge, not visible unless your eyes are at keyboard level).
Unless I turn on all the battery saving options, the cpu fan always runs, even if my maximum cpu speed setting is set to low and i am not doing anything on the computer.
None of these were issues with my r51 or r40. - scyform, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hmm, the author listed one of the "cons" as not having Core 2, but as of November 13th the lenovo.com site definitely has that option.
I wish he had mentioned something, anything, about battery life. - driya2000, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Or you can stick a usb wireless mouse and be done with it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3It looks like they're trying to compete with MacBooks, but they fail miserably.
- Clevinger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I think I've got an extra Thinkpad keyboard lying around if that's all you want.
- Sturmur, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2What a horrible website.
Can you say Ad Overload©? - saladin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Go to any airport, 3 out of 5 people are using Thinkpads. Too bad Lenovo are clueless about design and brand loyalty.
- apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2@Randomgeek:
PWNED!!1!!!1!11
You obviously don't share the views of many. - bloodninja, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0I'll pass, too much of my money goes to China as it is, not going to buy crap from a China owned company.
- randomgeek, on 10/12/2007, -39/+8Thinkpads have to be some of the ugliest laptops still on the market. Of course this says nothing for the components or how well they work/last, but geez. They're like the Volvo of laptops; boxy and ugly!
Good to see Lenovo stepping into 2006.
