- wisedude, on 11/21/2008, -2/+28You didn't get the news? This year, there IS no holiday season
- feliphe, on 11/21/2008, -1/+23too bad the Storm does not have WIFI, big mistake!
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -2/+18Why'd they leave out wifi?!
- Autodidaddict, on 11/21/2008, -2/+17Spoiler alert:
Verizon: You lose - Nouman6, on 11/21/2008, -1/+13and if they had taken the phone in the first place, they'd be on the other end of this.
- i23Photography, on 02/12/2009, -4/+11But wifi is free and it beats paying per minute for airtime
- Gonasadude, on 11/21/2008, -5/+11I've heard bad things about the UI and the click feature. Oh how I wish the BlackBerry Bold were on the Verizon network! =(
- atma1008, on 11/21/2008, -0/+6I am surprised by the sexy look of the Storm, as I was skeptical if it can compete w/ the elegance of the iPhone. The lack of WIFI may make it a loser though. And I think it would be wise of them to stick with targeting the executive/corporate market, as I don't think they will be able to compete against iPhone for normal consumers.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -2/+7obviously didn't use it on education
- ghast, on 11/21/2008, -1/+6rofl seriously? they left it out cause there isn't enough room, but the canadian version will magically make room?
maybe they left it out cause verizon are a bunch of ***** and want to gouge you better? - SemiSarcastic, on 11/21/2008, -2/+7The only thing that can save you this holiday season...IS CRIPPLING DEPRESSION!
- kboyer, on 11/21/2008, -2/+5yeah too bad business and iphone don't go well together - have fun without a removable battery, and no copy/paste. give me my BB any day
- kboyer, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3And maybe some day Apple will put better security on the to-do list. Until then, corporate America will stay away. And touchscreen typing? Please, give me my QWERTY keyboard for speed any day. Yes, I'll keep my BB, thanks!
- Jerk, on 11/21/2008, -1/+4Verizon hasn't figured out how to charge users for WiFi yet.
- chokeaduck, on 11/21/2008, -1/+4@IDComics, you have to be kidding me. A Blackberry is ALWAYS connected to the data network, and as such needs to have an unlimited data package. For 29.99/month.
You clearly have no idea what you are talking about, can you imagine your bill if you had a Blackberry data transfer being billed as airtime? You'd be asking for a bailout. - kboyer, on 11/21/2008, -1/+4Verizon > ATT > Sprint
- chokeaduck, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3WHAT?!? It has BT capability. Even a freebie phone does.
- onelikeseabass, on 11/21/2008, -1/+4It has its market share in business because of the BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server). It allows an IT department to have far greater control over what the device and user can and cannot do compared to the iPhone.
The iPhone may finally be able to do Exchange mail, but the horrendous lack of security in an Enterprise environment makes it a terrible choice. - Elranzer, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2Being locked to Verizon ain't as bad as being locked to AT&T. At least you're being locked to a GOOD cell service.
- kboyer, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2Guess that's why BB rules the roost in corporate America?
- EagleTG, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2So... instead of a bucket of coal, we get buckets of water?
- Elranzer, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2Verizon > Sprint > Cup & String > Yelling Loudly > AT&T
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2@chokeaduck
There are other countries in the world, and many of them get gouged for wireless data plans, which typically follow a "pay-per-X amount of data" type model. So WIFI is pretty important. - Elranzer, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2Techies would want a Gphone anyway.
- Elranzer, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2Don't know why you're being dugg down, chockeaduck. I've gone through several smartphones of varying operating systems (Windows Mobile, Palm, Blackberry, etc) on Verizon, and they don't mess with the UI at all on those.
But yes, they do flash the non-smartphones like the Samsungs or LG's with their "Brew" firmware. - meirav, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2@elranzer
Thanks, that was helpful information. - positron, on 11/21/2008, -1/+3Even if VZW had the Bold they'd just lock it down and ***** up the UI. They do it with all their phones. Only thing that keeps most people with them is the network coverage and free calls to other VZW customers.
- n3demonic, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2Blackberry Bold for Verizon - May 2009
It's too bad that by than something newer and better will have come along on another network - robbiedo, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2My T-mobile Blackberry Curve has WiFi. T-Mobile uses my home WiFi for VOIP, and you can get unlimited VOIP over WiFi for $10.00 a month.
The nice thing about this is a lot of home users get patchy reception which varies by network and location. However, with the WiFi, I can use my phone at home without drop outs on the cheaper T Mobile plans. - Jerk, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2You must not have seen the reviews yet.
- onelikeseabass, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2I believe you meant Nullsoft, the company that created WinAmp. Nullsoft is now owned by AOL and has been for several years.
- bigjoker420, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2dugg cuz im gettin a storm but i wish i had att so i could get an iphone and use the app store.
- troye, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1I would get it if I had $200 this christmas
PROS:
1) No itunes needed to put music on the thing
2) no app store mandatory, although RIM's appstore won't be as totalitarian
3)better screen than iphone
4) it's a blackberry :)
CONS:
1) it's locked to VZW and have to leave my carrier for CDMA and i have to get a 2yr contract in order to get the Storm for $200
2) not as unlockable as iphone - mdshort, on 11/21/2008, -1/+2It's true. I'm a verizon customer and every phone I have ever owned from Verizon has been stripped and/or locked down so that you can't use extra features. Bluetooth transfers are ALWAYS locked-out, custom ringtones are nearly impossible for casual users to add (without buying them of course), and there are very few phones (if any) that Verizon carries that actually has WIFI. Their coverage in my area sucks so I'm switching to AT&T...
- MacParrot, on 11/21/2008, -1/+2Wait...you actually need a reason to NOT buy something? I usually go with "it's not what I want or need"
- Autodidaddict, on 11/21/2008, -2/+3This article isn't talking about service...it's saying how Verizon is hoping that RIM's Storm can take some market share away from the iphone.
It won't. - mal1964, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1WIBI?
- Cglass, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1And because we have to conserve everything we can, coal for ***** will simply be replaced with some hydrogen that may be split many years down the road when Christmas returns =(
- Autodidaddict, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Does cup and string have free nights and weekends?
- LiveWire530, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Most business users are tied to blackberry as its been a proven leader and integrates well with enterprises
- therealrico, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Anyone know how much this will cost without the contract? I keep doing searches trying to find a price online, but so far I have only been able to find the 2 year contract price of 200 bucks
- chokeaduck, on 11/21/2008, -1/+2Actually they only do that on their dumbphones, not PDA/Smartphones, in regards to the UI. Thanks for playing though.
- Beatmiser, on 11/21/2008, -3/+4To those wondering about the WiFi on the Blackberry, I don't think you understand what a Blackberry Device is meant to be. It's not a web-phone like the iPhone. Blackberry is meant for a far more business/on-the-go solution. This means that it does not want to be tied to a hotspot.
- Darksoul, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1So ***** sad that they didn't release this to AT&T they don't strip and lock down their phones like Verizon does.
- Cglass, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Yes
- dejanigma, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1I worked on this.. everyone go buy one right now..
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Well all phones with WIFI typically require a contract with a data plan anyway...
so I can accept that type of gouging I guess, but what if I'm simply out of my 3G service area? I should get the option to use WIFI. - sipsyrup, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Im just waiting for the Omnia and the Diamond to come, then see which one will ice my cake.
- rimantas, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1So I guess WiFi is not suitable for business. Interesting.
