- JasonCox, on 01/24/2008, -2/+48Great, so we have a 64-bit ULV CPU for UMPC's- now we just need a GeForce 8-series card for UMPC's and we'll not only be able to play Crysis, but we'll be able to drain the battery in 7 seconds flat.
- BenBenMan, on 01/24/2008, -3/+46But will it run Lin...oh never mind.
- c7fanboy, on 01/24/2008, -0/+25Once again Digg fanbois completely miss the point... A high performance, 64 bit, Virtual Machine capable architecture developed by 100 engineers?!?! Holy x86 Batman!
- inactive, on 01/24/2008, -3/+24Holy ***** they did it. They divided by zero.
- Jonjonr6, on 01/24/2008, -4/+23A via low power CPU play Crysis?
Holy *****! - Dhalgren, on 01/24/2008, -0/+16God Damn It! I hate ***** web pages that make me play "dodge the pop up video mouse-overs" when I'm reading them. Seriously, what ***** thought this was a good idea?
On the Cyrix chip, I would have liked to hear an estimated cost... - smacksaw, on 01/24/2008, -3/+15Cyrix + Crysis = Cryix
You know your chip sucks and you get no love if someone writes an article about the name of your product that was around for years and gets it wrong. - simonwright, on 01/24/2008, -0/+12But will it blen... HEY!!!
- fuzzynyanko, on 01/24/2008, -0/+10They do have 8800 and 8600 mobile GPUs, though I can hear my PC's fans get louder over any other game I ever have played on this rig
- simonwright, on 01/24/2008, -2/+12And play is not a synonym for enjoy.
- Acolyte357, on 01/24/2008, -1/+11Are your Turion and Sempron just barley bigger than a dime and rated at 35w?
- Drizzt81, on 01/24/2008, -0/+9Does it FOLD! That is the question!
- aladrin, on 01/24/2008, -2/+10Dugg for mispelling "Cyrix".
I hope these are a lot more stable than the last Cyrix I used... It was pretty shakey. - inactive, on 01/24/2008, -1/+9VIA might be the new kid too kick intel's ass.
- Acolyte357, on 01/24/2008, -1/+9And where the ***** did you pull the 3fps number from? Did you read the article? It said it was not impressive, but didn't give any numbers.
- Icetype, on 01/24/2008, -0/+7Adblock plus FTW
- frgmstr, on 01/24/2008, -0/+7I misstated that TDP for the CN at 2GHz was 35w....it is 20w. Big error on my part that has been corrected. We will also see ultra low voltage varieties of this CPU that come in at 1GHz with a substantially lower TDP and less than 1v needed.
- GiggleStick, on 01/24/2008, -0/+7Yeah, but it takes forever.
- vibrokatana, on 01/24/2008, -0/+7I liked the via chips because they did more with less, which shows better engineering IMO. If they had the same budget as intel it would be interesting to see who came up top.
- millert, on 01/24/2008, -0/+6Something like an Asus EEEPC with one of these CPUs would be rather nice. I'd love something better than a sub-gigaherz celeron...
- cawpin, on 01/24/2008, -1/+7Your brain must be a VIA chip by that logic.
- mabhatter, on 01/25/2008, -0/+5the point is that this will be a sub $50 chip, a whole motherboard will be about $200 and run off a 9 volt battery for hours. Via is finally shipping something that's not a severe performance compromise to get very low power. The ULV stuff is clocked about the same, doesn't get quite as good battery life, and costs several times more than this chip will. If Via would jump the microsoft ship and go full-bore Linux with top support all the time, this would be the chip to do it.
- MiDri, on 01/24/2008, -1/+6Bloat, more does not always mean better.
- mooninite, on 01/24/2008, -1/+6Your name is fitting. Did you even read the article?
They showed *working* chips running Crysis. The reviewer guy saw the chips being made. VIA has hard plans to get this thing out this year. Heck, the guy even got to take one of the CPUs home! Did you not see that? *sigh* - skamp, on 01/24/2008, -0/+4The OQO e2 uses the VIA C7... http://www.oqo.com/intl/products/modele2/specifica ...
- shodanx, on 01/24/2008, -1/+5it wasn't that funny
- kidcodea, on 01/24/2008, -1/+4not when the purpose is crysis mobile.
- fakeollie, on 01/24/2008, -4/+7Will it fit inside a manila envelope?
- moron, on 01/24/2008, -2/+5Anyone who knows anything about semiconductor design will know that more engineers often does not lead to better products, nor does it reduce your design cycle. If you have a kick ass system design, and everyone on board you can design these products with very small design teams (under 20). Sure there are support members and people who play a roll in one way or another, but the main design is often done by very few people.
As for playing Crysis, it sounds like someone is tooting their own horn. First off, Crysis is really a multicore game. Originally the developers said that it requires 2 processors to play, but 4 is more optimal. Since this chip is only a single processor, it will, most likely, not play well. The next issue is the SSE4 instructions; games like Crysis use these instructions to accelerate the processing of massive amounts of data (doing z-transforms, vector processing, and matrix rotations). Thus if the processor lacks them, as the first generation will, the game will have to use other, longer, slower instructions to perform the same tasks. Thus performance will suffer even more.
Over the years we have had companies claim that they have or are developing the next generation processor. Often with amazing specifications, and huge claims. Most of them have never amounted to anything. Can it be done? Sure, but at the same time, you know that Intel and AMD are both spending tons of money to also do it. I'm not saying that their claims are totally false, but until produce working hardware that shows off these benefits, these claims are nothing more then hype. Get back to me in six months when you can show me working silicon, then we'll really see what your chip can do. - UNL1M1T3D, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3"Originally the developers said that it requires 2 processors to play, but 4 is more optimal. "
I am assuming you mean cores. Very few (if any) mainstream gaming motherboards support multiple CPUs. - moron, on 01/24/2008, -0/+3Competition is good. Without AMD pushing on Intel's door the last 5 years, we would not have the processors we have today. But AMD is waning, we need someone new to give us a new kick in the pants. I don't think that this will kick Intel's ass but it could pull some marketshare from their low power division. Again, a good thing.
- mabhatter, on 01/25/2008, -0/+3the T7500 is a $350 chip... the via chips are sub $100
- funkytaco, on 01/24/2008, -1/+3Well, if you would RTFA...
- geminitojanus, on 01/25/2008, -1/+3The SPECint and SPECfp values we're looking for are those of the Via CPU, not Intel's nor Motorola's nor IBM's, and are thusly irrelevant. But thanks for playing.
- UNL1M1T3D, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2Just because it might appear that way, doesn't mean it's the same thing. A dual core processor isn't as efficient as having two separate processors.
- Cjaiceman, on 01/25/2008, -0/+1This is just more proof that games are driving the industry to make faster, smaller and less power hungry hardware. I think this is a great idea to have a fast, low voltage processor as well all know I would love to play crysis on the plane, but I need to be able to do it on a coast to coast flight.... *rolls eyes*
Being serious this is a good thing, now if we can just get a good graphics card in a 14.1" notebook and still get the 5+ hours that I get now I will be happy. Give it another 6 months and this could actually turn out to be something really good.

- Phocion55, on 01/24/2008, -6/+7Yeah, but can it run Crysi...........oh. Nevermind.
- sprack, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1Its not Cyrix. There's no Cyrix hardware or design in it.
- opnickc, on 04/21/2008, -0/+1" and since it obviously doesn't use any standard pin out"
Actually, it's socket compatible with the Via C7's. - smrekar, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1I heard he counted to infinity....twice!
- protias, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1I've been waiting to do a carPC for some time now. This is some good news as I need lower power consumption as I have other plans too for my car.
- tyfighter, on 01/24/2008, -0/+1As mooninite said, there is no possible way you could have read the article and written that moronic statement. There is working silicon, the chip exists. They watched benchmarks running in actual machines. What is wrong with you?
