- frgmstr, on 01/25/2008, -3/+22I have been shown a LOT of tech stuff since I saw my first SMT line line running in a dirty warehouse in Taiwan producing Soyo BX chipset motherboards many years ago, but watching Centaur pull off so much of the preproduction process successfully with such few people in such a small space was truly impressive.
- SpongeBad, on 01/25/2008, -0/+17While the VIA chips may not be speed demons, they are low cost, low power CPUs that do a decent job. It's interesting in this day and age to see a smaller company like this still survive in an industry that other companies (e.g. Intel) are throwing billions at.
- Gizza, on 01/25/2008, -4/+12"This is John Carls and that is his “Harbinger” card. He fully designed the card himself in-house at Centaur. It actually emulates the CN processor. It only takes about 3 days to boot Windows XP. Charlie Demerjian, on Inquirer fame, noted that Vista could probably boot in less than a week then!"
Wow, so it actually speeds it up by about 50%. - Breepee, on 01/25/2008, -1/+7VIA expensive? Sure, a Celeron may be cheaper, but VIA's are much cheaper than your average Intel Core's or even AMD Athlon's.
- Gir53457, on 01/25/2008, -0/+5The last time I was interested in an article about VIA was about cell phone processors. VIA isn't in the market for the cutting edge processors, that's Intel, AMD and IBM. VIA is usually the people who you go to for very specialized processors.
- RAEP, on 01/25/2008, -0/+3Har har.
- drewlew, on 01/25/2008, -0/+3You've got to be kidding me?
- smackhero, on 01/25/2008, -0/+2yes, but what's "cutting edge" depends on your application. if you are looking for power-efficiency, and minimal form-factor, then VIA _is_ on the cutting edge of processor/motherboard development.
so if you are interested in ultra-portable PCs, embedded devices, DVR/PVR, or other specialized applications like you said, then VIA likely provides the best solutions. they just aren't on the cutting edge of generalized desktop/server processor development--but they still make great chipsets for those markets as well. - bluemist, on 01/25/2008, -1/+3I would assume that the majority of their customers are not us consumers but in the industrial sector or other companies who care about specific functions like power efficiency or temperature thresholds of their systems.
That may be why their boards are so expensive! - daifeichu, on 01/25/2008, -0/+2Looks like CN is going to be taking off and doing very well. Good to see a small company in that position. Can't wait to see what products will be coming out using CN processors.
- TheHim, on 01/25/2008, -0/+2i hope they make good revenue with this and stay with us for decades to come :)
- preachermanx, on 01/25/2008, -0/+1The fact that I have played Crysis on a CN and had it do fairly well says that yes they CAN work as a desktop as well, and do a good job of it but its not going to be THE bleeding edge. Just depends on what your priorities are as you state.
- preachermanx, on 01/25/2008, -0/+1Sorry bout that reread your comment and saw the last sentence :) . I have used VIA parts as border gateways, hardware encrypting VPN solutions as well as desktop replacement boxes.. All with good success.
- smackhero, on 01/25/2008, -1/+2just because you call yourself a "techie" doesn't make you the be all end all arbiter of geek news-worthy content. and not all "techies" are interested in the exact same things. HardOCP didn't get to where they are today by producing mediocre or uninteresting content, and for the hardware-centric geek crowd, this article provides a very fascinating look into CPU chip production--and from one of the more innovative tech companies of our time.
- zspitfire04, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1Forget the designs.. i want the specs!

http://www.generics.ws/ - geminitojanus, on 01/25/2008, -3/+3And yet, they perform slower than like priced Cores and Athlons, or for that matter, even Celerons. $/Performance, the Via CPUs just don't even register. If you're worried about heat output, there are a few wins in Via's line, but no more so than any other company's PPC or ARM lines (depending on how low you need to go).
