- yeeaauuh, on 09/15/2009, -2/+27MOAR RAM! NEED MOAR RAM!!!
- Onion575, on 09/15/2009, -1/+18All I did is upgrade my ram to 2gb. All the other upgrades seem too expensive for a $300 netbook (poor college student ftl).
Also, from personal experience Windows XP seems to run more comfortably on a netbook than Windows 7 (though admittedly there are some nice new features in 7). - Gibletoid, on 09/15/2009, -1/+15Laptops are large by comparison.
It's not just about specs, net-books are tiny, and that is the majority of their appeal.
I can buy a used school bus for $500, doesn't mean it should be my daily driver just cuz it's cheap. - wbrns, on 09/15/2009, -0/+10LOL I wish these worked on mine - I think I'm just to the point of buying a new laptop. Or maybe I'm just not quite geeky enough. :)
- tange1, on 09/15/2009, -0/+9Stupid soldered 4 GB SSD on the original EEEPC. Curse my early adopter-ism.
- max1001, on 09/15/2009, -1/+7Buy a $250 ssd to make your $300 netbook faster. GREAT ADVICE!
- RTFMA, on 09/15/2009, -0/+5I bought my netbook for its battery life and portability. It's an Eee PC 901, and I have performed almost exactly the same upgrades as in the article. I ended up spending about $550 on it after everything, and it's exactly what I need. Netbooks will never replace notebooks outright, but they have a role that they fill well.
- AdmiralAcbar, on 09/15/2009, -0/+5SPAWN MORE OVERLORDS.
- bigteebo, on 09/15/2009, -0/+4I feel you pain. I have one too, and the screen is flaky, and 4 gigs just is not enough.
- tyedye67, on 09/15/2009, -0/+3The Windows 7 and RAM upgrades were the most useful info out of this article. Thanks!
- StevieJanowski, on 09/15/2009, -2/+4good to know. waiting to see if apple drops a tablet befor i get into the netbook game though
- dhughes, on 09/15/2009, -0/+2 On my Acer Apire One I took a different route to speed, I'm trying to make mine more efficient, first to go was Windows since it lagged so much and yes I use Linux. The second was improving finding any problems with Linux; use ext4 instead of ext3, replacing pulseaudio, making sure everything works well without hardware timing out or searching for devices in the background.
- Gibletoid, on 09/15/2009, -0/+2You are not good at analogies I guess.
Netbook = Small, therefore a full sized laptop is not a suitable replacement. The netbook is small enough o fit in a purse.
Now try to apply that logic to the bus. Assume the purchaser needs a vehicle that can be parked in the driveway of their home, the bus won't work.
You are comparing apples to oranges. I want an orange, but an apple is still food. How does this get my arbitrary need for an orange satisfied? - funkyloki, on 09/15/2009, -3/+5And that is why they have a bury button. You just sound like you're whining now, and besides, just because you know about this DOESN'T MEAN EVERYONE ELSE DOES. That makes you sound arrogant.
- dodger6, on 09/15/2009, -0/+2Dug you up for speaking the truth.
I don't know why people keep posting the same old crap, add more ram, install a hard drive, defrag.
Yes more RAM will speed up your system to an extent, if you need more than 120gig you probably shouldn't be using a netbook and switching to a different OS is NOT AN UPGRADE! - antdude, on 09/16/2009, -0/+21 Print Page: http://www.maximumpc.com/print/7739 (will prompt to print).
- themastersb, on 09/15/2009, -0/+2I tried out the Ubuntu Netbook Remix and it just didn't settle well with me. I think it was due to the installation method it provides, but I found problems. There's not much of a reason to not get regular Ubuntu.
- danlowlite, on 09/15/2009, -0/+2Meh, I used to agree with you, but now I can carry a computer that does almost everything I need with a full-ish keyboard and screen.
I have a laptop, but it weighs a 7lbs (8+ with all the stuff) and mostly stays at home. A "netbook", which is a stupid name for the product anyway, goes a small step towards making computers ubiquitous; I consider that a good thing.
I can get my kid (or myself) a laptop she can take to school and I can replace somewhat easily...perfect. - nxusername, on 09/15/2009, -0/+2Moblin looks fresh.
- SmilinJoe, on 09/15/2009, -0/+2My netbook only bogs down when I fire up iTunes!
- but (more) seriously, I'm really amazed how much I can do with this little thing. I wish that it had more graphic kick though.. - gmuslera, on 09/15/2009, -0/+2Optimization goes around installing linux on it. And for optimizing that linux for that environment there are a lot of sites describing how, i.e. http://blog.bodhizazen.net/linux/netbook-optimizat ...
- dhughes, on 09/16/2009, -0/+1 Well when I bought it with Windows XP installed on it I thought I'd give it a shot but after a week of waiting two seconds each time I clicked anything it began to drive me nuts.
As for: "...If you want to say that you prefer Linux more than say that but don't pretend like Windows Vista was installed on the netbook or make Windows XP sound like some crappy slow OS..." What was my other option? - BigTuna, on 09/15/2009, -0/+1I've got a Asus 1000HE with the RAM upgraded to 2Gb. Installed EEEbuntu at first, but there seems to be a few too many bugs for my liking.
Now I have Mint Linux installed and that little machine flies. - Karai, on 09/15/2009, -3/+4Great article. Page 5 alone was worth the read. :D
- heresy_fnord, on 09/15/2009, -1/+2Suddenly your $300 laptop isn't so cheap anymore. That's the problem with stripping something down to bare bones. Yeah it's cheap but functionally useless. What's worse is you trick people into buying it for low cost and then they make the even worse decision to upgrade it beyond it's original function and you try to turn it into a real laptop.
If you want a real laptop that can do what you want it to do, buy it that way at the store. Don't buy one that you have to upgrade a month later. - KineticFlow, on 09/15/2009, -0/+1I have the 2GB SSD model. Screw you guys, at least you can install a modern OS without a SDHC card.
- carlosos, on 09/16/2009, -0/+1Windows lagged on your Acer Aspire One? WTF did you install to cause that?
I'm using an Acer Aspire One since about a year now without any lagging in Windows.
If you want to say that you prefer Linux more than say that but don't pretend like Windows Vista was installed on the netbook or make Windows XP sound like some crappy slow OS. - v4vishal, on 09/15/2009, -1/+2"You won’t be playing Crysis, but there’s plenty of gaming action to be had on a netbook. "
Hmm... - fraglerock, on 09/15/2009, -4/+4Spend over 50% of the price of your netbook on upgrades? I think not. If you want performance, buy a real notebook. If anyone disagrees with me I have some oceanfront property in Arizona you may be interested in.
I can't believe I used to buy that worthless magazine. - thisthatwhat, on 09/15/2009, -1/+1Other than the list of OS' it was just a bunch of information of obvious information.
Not that upgrading isn't an amazing idea but after you do that isn't it now more expensive than a notebook? Maybe just jump straight to a notebook and get more on one screen. - linagee, on 09/15/2009, -1/+1Can you give a factual reason why the school bus would not work? If all you had was $500 and you didn't want to pull out your credit cards...
- jeremanrox, on 09/15/2009, -3/+2i have the EEE 1000HA and it works great for what i wanna do with it. GiMP images, send email, browse the web, and watch streaming movies online( yes the 2gb ram helped that a lot). i don't game on it, i dont use MS office or Photoshop( very system intensive apps, naysayers be damned). the system is small, light and portable. its an on the go get stuff done machine, not my primary computer. thats what my desktop is for.
i have to agree with all the comments about buying a laptop for better performance. dont buy a $300 netbook and add over $200 in add ons, buy a $500 laptop. one of the things i miss the most on my EEE is a cd drive. not for installing apps or games or anything, simply for ripping cd's to it so i can fill that HDD with music for on the go. a $300 160 MP3 player that surfs the web, can manip images and isn't an ipod touch (remember, they have a 10inch touchscreen due out soon, fit that in your pocket) but again, i have a desktop and a network.
before buying a Computer, one must assess what one is going to do with the machine before one rushes to a computer vendor and makes the purchase. And dont let those bastards in blue or black shirts push you around. go into the store knowing what you want and get it. Netbooks don't need an external cd drive, $150 ram upgrades or $100 "bloatware" removal done at the store. These things are easily done at home.
To conclude, buy a laptop if you want $5-600 performance. Buy a desktop if you want good gaming capability, and buy a netbook if you spend a lot of time on the road or in airports, writing articles for the Cracked or someone similar. - inactive, on 09/15/2009, -2/+1If you bought a netbook and already need an upgrade, you shouldn't have bought it.
- master69better, on 09/15/2009, -2/+1Yes, upgrade your pea shooter to shoot frozen peas. I thought he was going to teach you how to extend battery life, stream/share content from desktop to netbook and get better wifi range by jamming a piece of foil somewhere.
- andrejhoward, on 09/15/2009, -4/+15th way ... buy a real laptop ... ***** Netbooks
- M4NiC5, on 09/15/2009, -8/+2So originally these were created because they're easier to travel with, cheaper, and not as a powerhouse laptop. Now we're looking at ways to boost speed/performance. I'd say effe the whole netbook crap and dig out a couple more bucks and buy a laptop with all this and better. It's all gonna phase into being a laptop anyways....it's almost there. Until then the companies are laughing at all the poor saps with these glorified smartphoneatops.
- frcc, on 09/15/2009, -10/+3Buy a $300-400 laptop if you want to overcome netbook weaknesses. There are enough choices with better specs out there than a netbook.
- DerJuden, on 09/15/2009, -15/+4Buried for obviousness and no brainer upgrades for anyone looking to get a netbook. Please stop digging these useless articles people.
