- Taikun, on 03/17/2009, -6/+99I'll stick with my 10G fiber backbone, thanks.
- juzsp, on 03/17/2009, -1/+65Why you spineless little.....
- rocke86, on 03/17/2009, -2/+53500 meters = .3 miles
So this will not be very useful for rural areas.
However 5x Longer than copper gigabit ethernet's 100 meters. - MrBrotato, on 03/17/2009, -3/+52Noooo, please don't prolong the live of copper any longer.
- engelb15, on 03/17/2009, -1/+44But you can only go 100 meters with that. They are talking about broadband to your home, not structured Ethernet (Cat5e / Cat6) cabling.
I was a little caught off guard by it too until I read the article. - inactive, on 03/17/2009, -4/+45Am I missing something? I am using GigE on copper, and that is twice the speed of 500mbps. And its running through our whole 2 story building.
- inactive, on 03/17/2009, -2/+39OH GOOD FOR YOU
- StigNordas, on 03/17/2009, -4/+33Fap and torrentz at the same time?
- geesamba, on 03/17/2009, -2/+29Yeah, but mine goes to 11.
- CrashLing, on 03/17/2009, -1/+22I would be happy if my Cox cable was not down for a day at least once a month. LOL
Also part of the problem is that that copper in the lab is oxygen free. The difference between old copper and new copper is vastly different. Oxidation over time raises impedance and the difference between braided and solid core copper wiring is even more determinant. Not all wiring is made the same. Dugg because we love tech on Digg. - darkciti2, on 03/17/2009, -0/+20As a stopgap measure, this is welcome news, but I can't wait for fiber to the curb.
- inigomntoya, on 03/17/2009, -1/+21All I heard was BBQ.
- jayadelson, on 03/17/2009, -0/+20Somehow I think I'm still not going to benefit. We've seen 10-100mb/s speeds over DSL loops since 2000, I saw trials back in SF. Still, no one ever used it...and I believe Cisco even has a few patents on that technology. Meanwhile, I get crap-ass download speeds to this day out in the sticks. My EVDO is better than my DSL or cable. Can someone please fix this?
- whynotandy, on 03/17/2009, -4/+24upto 500m and it uses 6 pairs
sounds great
/s/ - RadiatedAnt, on 03/17/2009, -0/+19I need more fiber in my diet...
- UnFriendlyFire, on 03/17/2009, -0/+18I want fiber to my brain.
- inactive, on 03/17/2009, -1/+15¿Como?
- itsbradman, on 03/17/2009, -0/+14No, they aren't. They are talking standard UTP, i.e DSL not coax, i.e cable.
- UnFriendlyFire, on 03/17/2009, -0/+14Thanks for the clairfication. /not sarcasm
- varun1s, on 03/17/2009, -3/+15Probably very useful for running the last mile, if the reality agrees with the hype.
- FredFredrickson, on 03/17/2009, -0/+12Submitting for the sake of submitting? MrBabyMan would NEVER do that!
- malechite, on 03/17/2009, -2/+14The Unthinkable has been possible for like 10 years now! http://www.zombo.com/
- RonBurgundy76, on 03/17/2009, -0/+12I don't wanna hear about the Cox you get in Vegas. It's supposed to stay in Vegas, remember?
- nebben, on 03/17/2009, -3/+15OMGROFLBBQLMAO =)
- Topher06, on 03/17/2009, -2/+12It took Canada 10 years to finally offer 20mbps service over copper, so it would be 250 years by the time we get these speeds.
- AndrewMoyer, on 03/17/2009, -0/+10That'd be so awesome if your "/not sarcasm" was in fact sarcastic.
- SgtSeaCow, on 03/17/2009, -1/+10Full agreement: kill it dead. The US will never be able to compete, nor use upcoming bandwidth-intensive apps -- not a national scale -- as long as we are sinking cash in to keeping these old technologies and infrastructures alive. I know Ericsson is not a US-based group, but still . . . kill it!!
- Johnglave, on 03/17/2009, -5/+14They obliviously don't use 500Mbps there server's already down........
- mobislink, on 03/17/2009, -0/+8How can this be unthinkable if some one actually thought about it and implemented it?
- TrevorPace, on 03/17/2009, -0/+7Don't digg him down he's right.
- Ragarnok, on 03/17/2009, -0/+7that's 500m from a connection terminal, not 500m from the internets
- Azimuth1, on 03/18/2009, -0/+7Anything that delays mass deployment of fibre to the home is a bad thing.
- whynotandy, on 03/18/2009, -1/+8"But not on a single line. To get these numbers, the company had to "bond" six different lines together"
Sounds like 6 pairs to me - inactive, on 03/17/2009, -0/+7QUE?
- merreborn, on 03/17/2009, -1/+8500m is more like the "last 0.31 mile".
Modern DSL has a range of up to 10 miles from the CO, using loop extenders. - JuanBSU, on 03/17/2009, -0/+7You eat what?
- theBean42, on 03/17/2009, -0/+7Title is a bit misleading. The speed is impressive because they are doing this over telephone wires. This means you could theoretically get a 500mbps Internet connection.
And yes newer cat cables already does 10gbps on local ethernets but that isn't the intended use of this technology. - chillymanilli, on 03/17/2009, -2/+8You must have a very big willy!
- BSDaemon, on 03/17/2009, -1/+6This is really not a big deal, at all. Buried for inaccuracy.
- EricAnderton, on 03/17/2009, -0/+5Exactly. I quit reading after I saw "channel bonding".
Didn't we already learn that lesson with ISDN? Supporting that crap was a nightmare. - UselessTrivia, on 03/17/2009, -0/+5at 500 meters why not just run Cat6a and get 10Gb? Sure you need more repeaters but the bandwidth is way better.
Everyone is bagging on copper, but fiber has serious limitations. The cables are expensive and fragile. You can't terminate them yourself unless you have some very expensive equipment.
Fiber as a backbone is great. Fiber up to the house is great. Fiber to the desktop? Not for a long time. 1Gb ethernet adapter: 10 bucks. Fiber adapter? 500. - Pseudorious, on 03/17/2009, -0/+5The headline is misleading. Cat 7a cable should be capable of this.
- AngelBunny, on 03/17/2009, -2/+6vdsl and vdsl2 have been around for a while now and so had docsis 3.0. All this last week I was playing around with new cable modem tech. I uncapped my modem to 55/12 on comcast. It isn't 500 but that isn't bad either especially when it is 100% free.
- Coercion, on 03/17/2009, -1/+5pffft south korea plans to have gigabit internets by 2012 or so.
thats where i'm goin - ayeroxor, on 03/17/2009, -4/+8Headline isn't very amazing. klown is right; gigabit over copper is called Cat6e and it's been around for years.
Submitter clearly doesn't know what makes this article/capability special, and is just submitting for the sake of submitting. - AngelBunny, on 03/18/2009, -0/+4sign up at http://www.sbhacker.net/forum/ (so you can send a msg) and then PM this person http://www.sbhacker.net/forum//index.php?showuser= ... with contact info like email and I will contact you if you want specific details. Honestly, i'd rather give out my email address but I'm afraid spammers will get it and getting you to sign into a forum with all the info you need helps too.
Yes I'm using a DOCSIS 2.0 modem; sb5100. Everyone's situation varies greatly depending on many factors like: node you're on, ISP, modem, firmware, settings, and so on. But overall my advice is to never alter a modem that is registered to you or has any ties to you at all. Aka if you are paying for cable internet and you decide to uncap your only modem that you're using. That is a major no no and it is easy to get caught that way. Also, if you're not paying for cable internet but you want to use the internet regardless this can be done but is far more dangerous. Most people who 'steal' cable internet pay for it and have a main legit internet then 1 or multiple banded together 'illegal' connections for high speed torrenting or whatever. Another thing is when on the hacked internet make sure to never use services that can trace back to you. Like if you are a comcast subscriber they give you a free email address and this is your main email address. If you used it on the hacked net and comcast is trying to find out who you are and they see your email account they will know who has uncapped their lines. All in all, don't do anything that is tied to you on hacked net. Do not use hardware tied to you on your hacked net, don't use internet services tied to you like email. If this is done right hacked internet is more secure than a proxy. If your ISP can't find you then a warrent isn't going to change that either. Illegal internet allows for 100% anonymity.
Stealing internet is far more for the thrills than stealing satellite. Stealing tv you don't pay a penny. Most people who steal internet still pay for their internet regardless. If you're trying to save a couple of bucks then this probably isn't for you but if you like taking things apart and 'playing' with it then this might be for you. - MacSuxWindozSux, on 03/18/2009, -0/+4And Bell Canada would still only be offering 60gb monthly. or what ever minimum Rogers sets.
- slingr, on 03/17/2009, -0/+4Sorry, I had to digg you down. Your comment basically condemns mass-media entertainment when that is precisely what Digg is...
Don't get me wrong, I slam MSM all the time in my Digg comments, but we are pretty much MSGM... MainStream Geek Media... - ayeroxor, on 03/17/2009, -1/+5And LEON's getting LARGER.
