- repick3, on 04/17/2008, -2/+61My household runs on the basis of want and need.
I really want one of these, but I don't need one :( - ZeroOrDie, on 04/17/2008, -39/+95I just punched my wife in the face.
- arcooke, on 04/17/2008, -4/+52Earlier, in a different article, you made a post asking that we ***** your mother. Now it's punching your wife.
I think I speak for everyone when I say... o_O - Heretushi, on 04/17/2008, -6/+34It would have been a good article if it wasn't bashing Windows XP on every turn. Come on, people still care about the default XP background? If it's not your thing, just change it and pass on, do not take the time to stupidly write your distaste of it in a EEEPC article where it has NOTHING to do with it.
- Dougman82, on 04/17/2008, -6/+28I wish they would first focus on bettering the battery life before adding features like a damn webcam...
- friend18, on 04/17/2008, -6/+27Kicks the ***** out of the overpriced Macbook Air. Asus did it first and did it better.
- Roger, on 04/17/2008, -0/+21Sigh, no Atom. Guess its back to waiting.
- pathy, on 04/17/2008, -0/+18The web cam isn't an added feature.
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 04/17/2008, -3/+20Well at least you're honest.
- Jonjonr6, on 04/17/2008, -0/+16I also like how he points out "shoehorning XP into the 20GB model." You don't have to "shoehorn" XP to fit it on 20gb. A full XP with all updates will fit in 4gb. Sure, Linux is smaller, but that's not the point. The point is, it's only shoehorning if you were talking a 2gb drive, not 20.
- jason469, on 04/17/2008, -3/+17Tech news? on digg? where are the Hilary-Obama-McCain articles?
Man this is great to have a tech article for a change....oh wait it's bashing Windows...sigh
I knew this article was too good to be true. - BugMeNot2, on 04/17/2008, -0/+14FTA:
"Available from May 1st in the UK" - estvir, on 04/17/2008, -2/+15Your ideas are intriguing and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
- cardjoe, on 04/17/2008, -0/+13As an EEE 701 4G owner, I think you will - I already do after having looked at the new one.
- kravex, on 04/17/2008, -0/+13I just looked at your profile, you really are a troll!
- dezman2003, on 04/17/2008, -0/+11Really? In that case I'll take 10!
- wacki, on 04/17/2008, -3/+14"I just punched my wife in the face."
This shouldn't be funny and I should be offended. Yet for some reason I laughed out loud and dugg you up. Why did I do that? I'm confused and I hope my significant other doesn't read this (she is a bit nerdy). - bigsteve, on 04/17/2008, -0/+10Atom is Intel's latest baby. It's a super-small footprint super-low heat and power consumption x86 chip that appears to be aimed at the small, almost embedded-space market. It'd be great to see Atom notebooks like this, super small, light, great battery life, but (at least at first) I don't see it making the Eee's pricepoint. Which is sort of a bummer.
- Istrancis, on 04/17/2008, -1/+10And cluster them together to make your own web server, which you intend to leave running on a 24/7 basis!
- inactive, on 04/17/2008, -0/+9you mean the macbook air which is made by ASUS?
- 8270369, on 04/17/2008, -0/+8To everyone crapping on the eee because it's not "useful" enough:
It helps to remember that for geeks and nerds, this kind of device is comparable to jewelry. Most non-geek people think nothing of dropping 500 bucks on a wrist watch, and things like the eeePC or the iPod Touch are the geek/nerd equivalent -- they're sort of useful, as that D&G watch is, but at the end of the day the joy is all about holding it and looking at it and marveling at its perceived beauty, as well as impressing other geeks and nerds. I look at those D&G watches and think "What's the big deal? I don't get it," the same way some people look at my eeePC and go "What's the big deal? I don't get it." But I look at an eeePC or iPod Touch and go "Wow, that's beautiful. Might not be very useful in real terms, but I want one and I want it now." People more well off than myself would look at the MBA in the same light.
Basically, if you don' t get it (i.e. what I've said above), you're never going to get it, and all the strom-und-dang about refurbished Macbooks and $500 BestBuy laptops will not change anything. - arcooke, on 04/17/2008, -3/+10It's the 2nd sentence for *****'s sake.
- qwertycopter, on 04/17/2008, -0/+7I say "lowercase oh underscore uppercase oh" all the time.
- cawpin, on 04/17/2008, -1/+7Because you can't fit a regular laptop in a large pocket. This, you can.
- knowmad23, on 04/17/2008, -0/+6I have a eeepc (710 4G full) With the 4-cell Li-ion: 7.4V, 5200mAh, battery. And there are so many ways to squeeze more time and life out of this battery. I get about 4 and a half hrs. out of mine and I'm usually listening to music and doing off line word/reading/movies.(one tip for movies is to transfer it to the on board flash mem, and view it from there, usb-drives suck more power)
like get more memory i upgraded from 512k to 2G and watched my consumption and heat drop.
or Dim your screen. on the second brightness setting, bright enough and oh so much longer life.
Try tweaking on the background processes, most of these are not always needed.
Avoid XP!!! this can nearly double your battery life and help rid the corporate world of gluttons at the same time!
for more information on tweaks for eeepc look here http://wiki.eeeuser.com/guidebooks:charging#power- ...
I've been using a lot of different laptops over the last 12 years, the emergence of the Sub-notebook category is just great. as an accessory to a home-network and @ 1kg!! Come-on Even the Energizer bunny weighs more! don't knock the Eeepc for battery consumption, in the Sub-notebook class it still going and .... - etx313, on 04/17/2008, -0/+6Well you do. Sound like a fanboy that is.
- PueSi, on 04/17/2008, -0/+6The Macbook Air is not that small, it's just thin which is useless (IMO) also, how is the Macbook Air more ergonomic?
- mlvassallo, on 04/17/2008, -2/+8"as you can probably tell by the lack of the horrible XP default wallpaper"
The wallpaper is bad, however I didn't see a picture of the laptop turned on... so no I couldn't tell. - mrsteveman1, on 04/17/2008, -1/+7obligatory unrelated jab:
"Listen Lois, I know you're a feminist and I think that's adorable, but this is grown-up time and I'm the man." - FecalHurler, on 04/17/2008, -0/+6The point of my post is that the Air doesn't excel at either of the two areas people look at when buying a laptop. It:
1) Isn't more portable. As PueSi (and I) both said, making it thin doesn't add to the portability.
2) Doesn't have specs to match the price. Sorry, it's true.
And you're analogy to luxory vehicles fails on two fronts. First of all, I had no idea that laptops are now another tool for status. Thanks for helping me prove my point. Secondly, I would buy a Nissan Altima over a G35 (especially the newer models) because they're essentially the same exact vehicle, only one has Infiniti on the front and the other has Nissan. Hell they even look the same now, and in no way is there justification for spending an extra $15,000 dollars for a name. Though not as extreme, looks to me like you're doing the same thing. - shinythingy, on 04/17/2008, -0/+6It is opening a box and taking the thing out. What the ***** do you want?
- FecalHurler, on 04/17/2008, -2/+7Well, the price reflects the trendy thin design, not necessarily the specs. You can find much better deals on lappys with similar specs, but since they don't have Apple on the case it doesn't warrant consideration. Honestly, being thin doesn't even add to the portability. However notebooks that are smaller than a hardcover book are. I hated the Air as soon as I saw it. Just because it's thin doesn't make it ultra-portable.
Go ahead and Digg me down you Apple loving *****. - Tenoq, on 04/17/2008, -0/+5These 'coats' sound pretty handy. Where do you get these 'coats' you speak of?
- rodrigo74, on 04/17/2008, -0/+5What's Atom about?
- pathy, on 04/17/2008, -0/+5I owned a 701 4G, but I'm most certainly going to get one of these and pass the older one down the family line. Great little machine for browsing the net, MSN, etc.
The extra res and screen size will pretty much turn this in to my dream laptop now. - blackjack75, on 04/17/2008, -0/+5Obviously the smaller eye is the one that got punched.
- inactive, on 04/17/2008, -1/+6The EEE is the size of a ***** DVD case. I can lug it around in my cargo pant pockets. Can you do that with a Regular laptop?
- burkhartmj, on 04/17/2008, -0/+5Atom is intel's super low power mobile proc. It's low-voltage enough for smartphone makers to consider using it, yet noticeably more powerful than previous mobile procs.

Rumor is at or soon after release, the 900 will get a revision with atom, but I'm not holding my breath. - exomni, on 04/17/2008, -0/+5Oh God that looks so tasty.
- oblique63, on 04/17/2008, -1/+5really? cause, I have this thing called a 'coat', and it has a pretty large pocket inside of it that looks like it would definitely be able to fit something like that in there... its a pretty interesting item this 'coat'...
- Ellipsys, on 04/17/2008, -1/+5I used to have an Asus Eee 701 (7" model, 4gb HDD) but returned it knowing that the 900 was on the way. Though I won't be purchasing /this/ 900, I do plan to adopt the model that has the more powerful and efficient Atom processor. Keep your eyes out for that one in the coming months. Also, there was an interview with an Asus executive that stated that there will be some sort of cosmetic upgrade around June - Rumor has it its a partial chassis redesign and the executive mentioned "Western" and "Asian" varieties. Personally, I'm hoping that the "Asian" version contains the bamboo construction that was previously prototyped by Asus. Either way, its a great little machine and it looks to only be getting better.
- mrsteveman1, on 04/17/2008, -1/+5Any smaller than 2gb and you must use XP shoehorn edition (comes with polish)
- FecalHurler, on 04/17/2008, -2/+6People on Digg aren't married... Nice try, slick.
- Zaggynl, on 04/17/2008, -0/+4Dugg for tech article and not being about %%@# obama vs hilary vs mccain or cats.
- ZachSka87, on 04/17/2008, -0/+44 Cells. Lightweight.
The Dell D400 is a monster compared to the size of this thing. In fact, it has twice the mass.
The point of this device it to be small, lightweight, and ultraportable. The battery life isn't superb, but you must remember that small != great battery life. When it's this small, there's not a lot of room for power cells. - chinolofus, on 04/17/2008, -0/+4hi sam.
- Elranzer, on 04/17/2008, -1/+5The battery power (2.5 hours) is still ridiculously low for such a device, especially with such under-powered components and lack of moving parts (HDD or CD/DVD Drive). I was expecting close to 5 hours on regular battery, 9 hours on expanded battery.
Just to compare, Sony Vaio sub-notebooks have had these kind of battery hours years ago. A Dell Latitude D400 series (same size as the old 12" Powerbooks) with more powerful components and moving parts (HDD, CD/DVD) has better battery life than this. A used Latitude at $300-$400 would be a better deal than this. - mastersmite, on 04/17/2008, -1/+56 pounds in a bit much to put in a pocket like the eeePc or for a girl to carry in her larger than necessary purse, i showed my black 701 4g to my ex and she is hell bent on getting a pink one now.
- reventlov, on 04/17/2008, -0/+4Sam here, if only because I bought the first version. The EEE is a good little laptop. I use mine all the time to watch movies or read reports on the train, crack wep/wpa, and settle nerd trivia fights between coworkers during breakfast meetings. My girlfriend loves it, too. She uses it instead of her widescreen laptop when she wants to sit on the couch and read the news. It's not my workhorse PC, but I haven't touched my old laptop in the months since I bought it.
- FecalHurler, on 04/17/2008, -0/+4Ahh... The good old 'digg me down' psychology. We all know that means you get dugg up.
