- terrizance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+47Yeah...usually "Ultimate Gaming Rig" and "reasonably-priced" don't go together.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -1/+41Smart thinking. When the next one comes out you'll have some toes left.
- hisjap2003, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26dugg so that a year or two from now i can look back at the "Ultimate Gaming Rig" of November 2006 and reminisce.
- Mist0r_Wiggles, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24engagement ring or the ultimate gaming PC?
hummm... maybe I should find a chick that puts out more...
New Task:
find a sugar mommy - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17heh heh... makes you want a full-sized rig don't it? :)
- samuelmcm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13wow id probably give away 4 of my toes for that rig
- knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13i love how your biggest concern is paying for 2 graphics cards when the processor itself will be $1000+ and this motherboard will likely be over $450.
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14ROFL, Intel is CREAMING AMD. And it will last for some time. K8L isn't scheduled until 2H '07 at the earliest.
Gotta love those AMD fanboys. - Th3R1pp3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11WoW... ..I'll damage my laptop with all this drool!
- phort99, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Minor problem: The GeForce 8800 GTXs alone is $600, and this suggests putting two in. Gah, those are some painful numbers to consider.
- Daunting, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10And I thought the porn was going to mess up my keyboard.
- jus1haz2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I was an AMD fanboy until the core duo came out, and with the core duo 2 *****... intel is pwning AMD, but hey IMO AMD was better for awhile, from the athlon xp's up to the first 64bit's
- futaris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Only a smidge over US$5000... $5319 according to the prices on the last page, and that's including the 30" screen.
- DolphinGL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yes, but you'll need to buy 2 linked nvidia holodecks to get any kind of performance and that'll get expensive. And the ATI holodeck's drivers will keep crapping out and that holo-supermodel you're trying to make it with will keep turning into Michael Moore.
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Uh, the nForce 680i board can be had for $250. I know, because I just got a pair of eVGA ones in.
The QX6700 is indeed pricey, as are SLI'd 8800GTX, but WTF can you expect?
IMHO you get what you pay for. The performance is absolutely unbelievable. - Icecream, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Indeed this is good, but new Tri SLI boards come out in the not to distant future. That will make it possible to have three 8800's handling all your Hello Kitty Island Adventure textures and sprites.
- Yashar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Holy ***** @ 3dmark score!
"There are 16 systems with a higher score and 471668 systems with a lower score than your system." - D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7basic math my friend
4>1
other than that......honestly it may just be bragging rights - mitrovarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The point of expensive hardware isn't to make bad games good, it's to make good games better. Sure, it won't put a great storyline in or make an ugly game look nice, but it will make a good game run fast and smooth with beautiful graphics, enhancing the experience. Solidly fast framerates are also necessary to be competitive against others online.
- LowFuel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Really very little, until more games are optimized for threading.
The main benefit you'll get right now is things like anti-virus, instant messenger, and other various OS components will have ample CPU available when they wake up and do stuff in the background while you are playing, instead of needing to grab cycles from the core you are using while playing.
(I'm simplifying the situation a bit but you get the idea). - giloron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You can have my 10 year old PS/2 Model M when you pry it from my cold dead fingers. Just because I only spent a buck on it doesn't mean it's junk.
- EztliNahua, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6$100 cheaper than what I'm running, and about 2-4x as powerful. Damn technology for advancing so fast.
Edit: Not including stupidly expensive monitor. - Spikito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I think its pretty sad that i only had to read the title once and i knew exactly what all that meant, i need a life
- Cyberdactyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What I find amazing, is you can dish out about 50% of the cost of this UGR for a the next rung lower and have frame rates roughly 75-90% of what is claimed here.
If you have a rig that never dips below 80 FPS even at 1900x1200 with everything maxed. . . why on earth do you need to spend another $2000? - airstrike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2not for gaming (read title) it doesn't.
- blargman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3yes cause running 99% of games at an insane resolution and all goodies turned on is stupid .
if you didn't notice i'm being sarcastic, wtf, sli rules, don't be angry just cause you can't afford it. neither can i :P - mitrovarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There's no vista drivers for the 8800 yet.
- SCMacUser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Man, that's some serious cash being dropped there
- paulmdx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As a software developer of high performance network software, let me tell you: if the game is single threaded (highly likely), the dual core being will be faster as it has a faster clockrate.
To the people digging down the comments saying the quad core is better: it's not what you've got, it's how you use it.. - DolphinGL, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It's not a myth, it's one factor to take into consideration when judging a CPU's performance. The only problem is Intel marketted soley by clock speed for the longest time, which is why it's unfortunately ingrained into the average consumer.
However, when comparing 2 identical architecture CPU's, in this case the Core 2 and the Quad Core 2, the clock speed is a viable factor in which to judge which can be suited to which purpose. As games do NOT take advantage of multithreading.....of the 2 cpu's in question, the X6800 2.93ghz is the faster choice, the fact that it has 2 cores instead of 4 is not a factor in games. - goerg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3can i put my hamsters into the 2 wheels?
- Sedako, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well, at the moment there really isn't much use for the quad core in gaming. Perhaps in some future titles developers will utilize one core for physics processing, one for communicating with the GPU, and another for AI type operations. It may be a while before we see full utilization of the quad core's potential.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Looks like they forgot a case so add that to your price.
- jus1haz2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Damn that thing sounds expensive, I couldn't even afford the monitor >
- mitrovarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yep, that's pretty bad. Looks like it belongs on somebody's trapper keeper.
- Farmer77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@_@

- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3There's no point, that is, unless you count 3dMark as a game. :)
- Th3R1pp3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Remember this is an AirCooled Rig, which could easily be turned into a 24/7 Rig, and Be Taken to you Local Lan Party for Bragging! :p
While the 5.5Ghz Overclocks have been done with extreme cooling like LN2, which are just Lab Experiments, not 24/7 Use rigs, and also are performed with all the components placed on a table... not with a Closed Case.
Just my 2 Cents.. - frant1c, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The interesting part here, of course, is the 680i chipset, not the fact that it's the 'ultimate gaming rig'. Actually, it's not even that ultimate - put a Core 2 Duo in the same MB and overclock it to the maximum and you'll get better results in games. Core 2 Duos have already been overclocked to over 5.5 GHz, how's that for 'ultimate'?
Anyway, the question (for me) is - is the 650i/680i going to be a good, stable, solid chipset to base my next box on...and based on the first batch of reviews, i think it just might. Especially since i'm not really happy with the current implementations of Intel's chipsets for Core 2 Duo. - dslartoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Help! I am suddenly hit by the upgrade bug again! My system was cutting-edge three years back, but nowadays I can't even run NFS: Carbon at high res with all the eyecandy turned on.
I'm going to short out my keyboard with drool after seeing this article. Mother of God, did you see those performance numbers? - kickarse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As I've said before, there can't be brand loyalties when it comes to having the fastest rig on earth.
- neuropsychguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Even with the energy-efficient core processors you'd better get your own power plant to run that thing (edit: just saw that they said that in the article, oh well, it's true)! Sweet computer.
- Sedako, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why am I being dugg down? No where during the demonstration do they state that a quad core processor will be required. Yes, it will help aid with the streaming of multiple threads, but I doubt that dual core processors will provide poor performance:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLEBOn9K5Nk
There is also an article from anandtech that states that the even some single core hyper threading processors may be able to run Alan Wake, although performance would probably be greatly diminished:
http://www.anandtech.com/tradeshows/showdoc.aspx?i=2841&p=2
If Alan Wake were being developed solely for quad core processors, Remedy would be missing out on a lot of business from the PC release. - DolphinGL, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Alright, I'll be the one to ask.
What is the advantage of a quad core in games? - reticulate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, they showed Alan Wake at the IDF.
It will run fine on dual cores, though.
Edit: dammit, that was a reply for blargman up there. Digg down at will. - Bleach00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1holy hell.
