- noumuon, on 04/09/2009, -0/+58i don't think you realize the difference in the information between 16 bits and 32 bits. 16 bits is only 65,536 2-byte combinations (a 16 bits cpu can have 65,536 memory addresses). whereas, 32 bits is 4,294,967,296 possible 4-byte combinations (4,294,967,296 memory addresses). the thing is that each bit is capable of storing two numbers, a 0 or 1. this corresponds to one bit being able to represent 2^1 integers (usually 0,1). for every bit you add, you add two more integers that it can represent, so the value for n-bits is 2^n. a misconception is that 32 bits is just twice as much as 16 bits, and while the number of bits does just double, when you look at the number of integers that are able to be represented between 16 bits and 32 bits, it's not twice as much, it's 65,536 times as much (65,536x65,536, or 2^32).

The excitement, expectation and titillation was still the same as it is today, it just took a wee while longer.....
In those days, all you had were filenames to select and download, there were no thumbnails of images to choose the best of, you took what you got....for around $25 per 5Mb (most images were 50-100kb).
