- CatFood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I'm sure we can find a use for these critters. The big thing is they can crawl on the outside of the ISS and check for any defects in the surface and then fix them. It's like a space Roomba on crack! :)
- OctaneZ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Make sure you check out the video of it climbing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzfP0Ig7eVQ
- sjk8990, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Of one of the four paragraphs on that page:
"Obviously such a robots could have plenty of useful applications, in search-and-rescue and space exploration, for example. But presumably it could also help you reach those really hard-to-prune branches." - spin-docta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6One day we'll have real robotic monkeys!
- MrNolan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"One day we'll have real robotic monkeys!"
And soon after that, real robotic monkey butlers.
The future looks bright. - GrendelT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Very cool design though. I like the steering demonstration.
- littleidiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3pretty cool but i think the tree grows at about the same speed that this thing climbs... :)
- spin-docta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5One day we could have robots get fruits and such from the top of trees... for example, a coconut
- norick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Impressive, impressive indeed.
It looks like a cameleon to me, and I'm sure the guys in the army will find some practical point to it.
Personnally, I'll use it to go find my cat up in the tree. - warfang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That was amazing when it was climbing up the brick. It was finding the edges of the brick to lift itself up. I wonder if it was preprogrammed to take steps at x distance or if it was actually searching for the edge.
- Pixellore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Nooooooooooooo not the Replicators from Stargate!
- Norse77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah that movie "Runaway" with Tom Selleck scared the hell outta me as a kid. Awesome movie.
- Mach5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2remember, when the robots take over, a tree is not a safe place to hide.
- Kazrog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That is totally sweet. I would love to r/c one of those around the office. :)
- ToadX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dude. That would totally freak me out if I saw one of those crawling around in my room.
- Zaffel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The juxtaposition of robots and nature always gives me the willies. you got it right..creepy!
(I never thought robots would the "tree hugger" type, but there ya go.) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why does it look like something out of War of the Worlds?
- fatlip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its just a trick we're playing on the robots, they'll never reach the top
that way when they take over the world, we'll have the last laugh - MurrayFox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Kind of how I imagined the SilverBugs from Earthcore to look like.
- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The next Mars rover? Or a giant version for the moon as a lunar rover that the astronauts can ride in next decade.
- applejackson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Climbing up your house.............spy on your little boy while he *****............it is creepy
- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why not now? Afterall, we have robot squirrels as listed in the comments on this digg:
http://digg.com/links/Man_s_elbow,_mistaken_for_squirrel,_shot - ludemunky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You're right... they look like mechanical bugs.
- GuineaPig, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3If terrorists take to hiding in trees, we'll be ready.
- MrFisty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great, just load it up with a suppository and climb little buddy! Climb!
OK, I just creeped myself out. - rossbrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was wondering that too.
Pretty cool, but only if you have several hours to wait for it to get somewhere. - Aesculapius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is totally the first thing I thought of!
- Leonaken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I saw this on YouTube. I can see it now.
"Roger, what the hell?! That was going to repair the phone line, you jackwad!"
"I had an undeniable urge to kill it, I'm sorry." - midorigin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's because the robot's not actually moving at all. The video's just a time-lapse as the trees grow.
- brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One step closer to a butler!
After all, a robot doesn't need to do anything much more complex in order to be a butler. - CrashKC, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords.
- CanuckPlumber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Some ppl don't like "bugs" ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why is that creepy?
- EntropyGuru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What's the deal with all of these creepy robots this week? First the poor "please don't kick me master" mulebot -- and now this. ;)
- dragulaaeop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you like that video, check this one out. Direct link goodness (right-click save-as)
http://www.bostondynamics.com/dist/BigDog_Feb-26-2006.wmv
(It isn't the same robot, but an interesting one at that. Pretty cool to watch what happens when it gets pushed to the side).
-Aeop - Wiggles2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No fewer than 4 co-workers have sent me this video...
- Ansible, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This could be very cool for tree trimming - truly. Or working on power lines and such. If this can have a chainsaw mounted on it, you could do a lot of jobs that require a bucket truck, and arrive on the scene in your compact pickup. If the thing can be produced for around 5000$, then you're way ahead cost wise. Plus you don't have to deal with the insurance cost of having people work up in trees and subsequently fall down on the ground.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1could be used for assasinations like climbing up stuff then taking down targets
- KidVicious, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well, nothing aside from building cars and electronics is a practical use for a robot today. Obviously people build robots like this because they have forsight. I think you got pwned by all those people who came up with uses for it and just tried to cover your ass.
- DruSam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's creepy because when all the robots turn on us, there will be no where to hide. No where.
- glaive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@DruSam
Yeah...too bad, too. My first response to a robot invasion would be to hide in a tree... - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1creepy like watching Bush at an unscripted press event
- kingkong118, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool robot i do have to say. Looks like a monkey. :)
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1There was an article about this at cnet yesterday.. (news.com)
- keramikos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whoa, I played with that when I was touring Mark Cutkosky's lab at Stanford University not two weeks ago. Didn't realize just how close it was to ready though! Freakin' Sweet!
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2What I meant was that getting fruit/space exploration/prune branches is not practical for a robot to do today. In the future sure, I'm sorry I didn't elaborate further.
- heaso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quick someone inform HUAR we're all doomed!!! Now how are we going to escape from those damn daleks!!!
http://www.humansunitedagainstrobots.com/HUAR.html - destryallrobots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Indeed. I soiled myself the day they came out with the first waterproof robotic "toy". We're losing options, people. Next thing we know, someone will come out with solar robots that are impervious to electro-magnetic pulses, about which the inventor would say, "I don't know why I made it. Bored I guess." Fools.
- herrin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2very awesome.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Any practical point to it?
